Peterloo 200th anniversary

There seems to be plenty of official commemoration of this momentous event in Manchestet. I believe there is a showing of "The road to Peterloo" at Whitby Folk Festival. Any other local folk doing anything special to mark the 16th of August?

Disrupt? Peterloo and Protest

Part of the national commemorations marking 200 years since the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester in 1819, this headline exhibition for 2019 tells the story of Peterloo and highlights its relevance today, examining issues within our democracy that people are campaigning for 200 years on.

The exhibition features objects, including original Peterloo artefacts, brought together for the very first time, alongside pieces telling more recent stories of protest. A short film commissioned especially for the exhibition brings to life the story of Peterloo, protest, and the road to democratic reform.

A creative space within the exhibition is a Protest Lab; an experimental gallery for individuals, communities and organisations to use to share and develop their views and ideas for collective action.

Details of these two events still awaited.

1. Annual walk from Middleton

In 2009, on the 190th anniversary of Peterloo, a group of six family members and friends walked to the city centre from Middleton, a town to the north of Manchester that was home to the Radical poet Samuel Bamford, in memory of local people who had been present at Peterloo.

The march has now grown into a huge annual event with walkers setting off at daybreak from each of the towns represented at St Peter’s Fields – following the same roads with some wearing replicas of the protesters’ red liberty caps that were inspired by French revolutionaries.

2. New Peterloo Memorial

The highlight of this year’s events will be the unveiling of a permanent memorial following a decade long campaign, which has been designed by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller.

The design is of a landscaped “hill” made out of concentric steps, representing a gathering place and a platform for public speaking. The names of towns and villages will be carved in stone, alongside the names of the dead.

In the afternoon we will be holding a special handling session with three ‘stations’ that can be visited including a cotton themed table; with a variety of cotton related archives, including sights and sounds from the cotton industry, The John Owen collection, Early Poor Law archives and a musical performance by the Free Radicals.

The Peaceful Weavers of Peterloo; An original production, written and performed by Charlotte Peters Rock, telling aspects of this important history, in songs and stories.

Manchester Central Library 25 July 2019 18:00 — 19:00 Free

The legacy of The Peaceful Weavers of Peterloo, has continued unabated, over the last 200 years. They wanted to feed, clothe, safely house and educate themselves and their children. The weavers (and other reformers) wanted the vote and the right to effect change. They wanted certain work and fair pay for their hard work and skill. In peace, as families, they came in Sunday best. The Red Cap of Liberty was flourished. For Liberty, Freedom and Justice.

Rights of the Child at Quarry Bank, 6 April–29 September 2019, Quarry Bank Mill, Styal
Admission prices apply (free for National Trust members)

Discover how children’s rights have changed over time in a fascinating new exhibition at Quarry Bank, Rights of the Child. Explore the experiences of hundreds of children who worked at Quarry Bank, tracing the evolution of children’s rights from the 19th century to today.

2019 is a topical year for the rights of children, marking the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on Rights of the Child, including protection against child labour.

2019 is also a key year in Manchester’s history of social change marking 200 years since the Peterloo Massacre. It’s fascinating to uncover how mill owners Samuel Greg and Robert Hyde Greg witnessed the massacre and spoke out against the atrocities.

Nevertheless, the Greg family were part of a manufacturing class who would often put profit before people, silencing calls for improved working conditions and blocking appeals to reduce working hours to 10 hours per day.

Today, 19.30 Sunday 14 July BBC Radio 3 Drama on 3: The Masque of Anarchy
A commemoration of the Peterloo Massacre in August 1819

Ian McMillan introduces a commemoration of the Peterloo Massacre to mark the two-hundred year anniversary of the events of 16 August 1819. Maxine Peake performs Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem of protest The Masque of Anarchy. Shelley was compelled to respond to the massacre in which cavalrymen charged campaigners protesting against the restrictive parliamentary representation of the time in St Peter's Field Manchester leaving 15 dead and 700 injured.

Recorded only a few miles from where it happened, Maxine Peake's performance makes the poem - a call for political action - resonate for a contemporary audience. We also hear eyewitness accounts from Samuel Bamford a radical reformer who led the group from Middleton and his wife Jemima Bamford performed by Jason Done and Christine Bottomley. Contemporary ballads written in the aftermath are sung by Jennifer Read.

The Masque of Anarchy, with a specially composed sound design by Peter Rice, was directed by Sarah Frankcom. The eyewitness accounts were directed by Nadia Molinari. This commemoration of the Peterloo Massacre was a BBC North Production, produced by Susan Roberts.

People's History Museum, Spinningfields, Manchester; Be the first to see rare Peterloo artefact

Tomorrow (Friday 19 July), a rare Peterloo artefact will go on public display for the very first time. Discover the Peterloo cane in our Disrupt? Peterloo and Protest exhibition, one of the few items to have witnessed the Manchester massacre on 16 August 1819.

It is believed the owner was at Peterloo as a protestor and dressed, like so many others, in his Sunday best with the walking cane a part of his attire, as was the fashion of the time.

The Peterloo cane, whilst simple in design, is highly symbolic in significance, carrying the inscriptions “be brought to Justice” and “I was one of the dreadfull (sic) bludgeons seen on the plains of PETERLOO”.

BBC Radio 4 Peterloo: The Massacre That Changed Britain

Episode 1. The Build Up - 11am Friday 2 August Rpt Sunday 4 Aug 22.30
Episode 2. The Aftermath - 11am Friday 9 August Rpt Sunday 11 August 22.30

Guardian Editor-in-Chief Katharine Viner charts the story of the infamous massacre - a devastating event 200 years ago in Manchester, which would have a huge impact on how Britain was run.

In the first of two programmes, Katharine meets descendants of people who were there that day. She examines the background and build-up and hears graphic accounts of the slaughter, death and injury. There are contributions from leading historians as well as dramatic reconstructions of real testimony from the time. Jennifer Reid sings.

In the second of two programmes, Katharine examines what happened in the immediate aftermath of Peterloo. She hears about those who lost their lives, the survivors, the press and public reaction and the attempts at a cover up. She also looks at the impact Peterloo had on British life and politics in subsequent years and decades – how the Government tightened controls on the people but how, gradually, things began to change and the franchise was extended. One of the direct outcomes of the massacre was the establishment of The Guardian newspaper - known then as the Manchester Guardian - just two years later.

Friday 16 August 2019, Manchester

Thousands of people are to take part in a huge re-enactment of the Peterloo massacre to mark the 200th anniversary of one of the defining moments in British political history. Around 3,000 people will perform a “combination of giant karaoke and autocue” on Friday near the square in Manchester where 18 people were killed and more than 650 injured by a sabre-wielding cavalry on 16 August 1819.

The names of the dead will be read out at 1.30pm, the exact time when 200 years ago troops were ordered to break up the crowd of 60,000 protesters who had gathered peacefully to demand political reform. As the last name is read out 18 bells will ring from Manchester’s neo-Gothic Town Hall followed by a minute’s silence and the release of 18 ribbons of red smoke. Screens across the city will display all the names of the dead.

Instead of a solemn civic ceremony, the event is designed to be an immersive, noise-filled show with a ticketed audience of 3,000 people but “no spectators, only performers”. The new monument, designed by the Turner prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller, was expected to be unveiled formally on Friday but was made public without any fanfare on Tuesday afternoon.

Just to add to henryp’s heads up on the central Manchester “re-enactment” - it didn’t involve 3000 people; well actually it did but they did it three times with 1000 at each.

To be quite honest, it was more of a pretentious, left wing, vanity project with American influences. I don’t do “audience participation”, I never have and never will. If they had explained what was going to take place at the time they sent out invitations to those with Peterloo ancestors, I wouldn’t have bothered and saved my train fare.

It started late, it poured with rain and people ignored the pre-event instructions not to bring umbrellas, the sound was bad - amplified drummers drowned out the speech. Whilst I have every sympathy with the homeless, deported refugees, people with disabilities etc. This was supposed to be a commemoration of Peterloo.

I expect those in the “mejia” will tell us all how wonderful it was on tonights local telly.

As for the memorial being unveiled last Tuesday; I suspect that was to save embarrassment. One wheelchair-borne cast member amusingly pointed out that they had designed a memorial with steps preventing him from getting access to it.

A shame, Ray. It should have been an enjoyable experience on a memorable day.

Sam Bamford was dramatically arrested after Peterloo;

The order was given to move; my wife burst into tears. I tried to console her: said I should soon be with her again. I ascended into the street, and shouted "Hunt and liberty!" "Hunt and liberty!" responded my brave little helpmate, whose spirit was now roused. One of the policemen, with a Pistol in his hand, swearing a deep oath, said he would blow out her brains if she shouted again. " Blow away!" was the reply. "Hunt and liberty! Hunt for ever!"

Bamford was imprisoned in Lincoln Castle for twelve months;

Lines, Addressed To My Wife From The King's Bench Prison, May 15, 1820

I never will forget thee, love!
Though in a prison far I be;
I never will forget thee, love!
And thou wilt still remember me!

I never will forget thee, love!
When wakes on me the morning light;
And thou shalt ever present be,
When cometh down the cloud of night!

I never will forget thee, love!
When summer sheds her golden ray;
And thou shall be my comforter
Amid the winter's cheerless day!

Oh! they may bind but cannot break,
This heart, so full of thine and thee;
Which liveth only for YOUR sake,
And the high cause of LIBERTY!
