Annual walk from Middleton In 2009, on the 190th anniversary of Peterloo, a group of six family members and friends walked to the city centre from Middleton, a town to the north of Manchester that was home to the Radical poet Samuel Bamford, in memory of local people who had been present at Peterloo. The march has now grown into a huge annual event with walkers setting off at daybreak from each of the towns represented at St Peter’s Fields – following the same roads with some wearing replicas of the protesters’ red liberty caps that were inspired by French revolutionaries. 2. New Peterloo Memorial The highlight of this year’s events will be the unveiling of a permanent memorial following a decade long campaign, which has been designed by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller. The design is of a landscaped “hill” made out of concentric steps, representing a gathering place and a platform for public speaking. The names of towns and villages will be carved in stone, alongside the names of the dead. |

Laura will be back with us for the full performance of 'The Road to Peterloo' in the Bolton area, at the Bromley Cross Folk Club on September 15th. In 1811 Hulton was responsible for the arrest of twelve Luddites who had set fire to a Westhoughton weaving mill. Four of them, including a twelve year old boy, were hanged. Another man at a Westhoughton mill was transported for seven years for "administering oaths". Hulton read the Riot Act on St Peter's Fields and sent in the Manchester and Salford Yeomanry. The Home Secretary, Viscount Sidmouth, sent him a message of congratulations. Hulton described 16 August as "the proudest day in my life." |

Maxine Peake performs Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem of protest The Masque of Anarchy. Shelley was compelled to respond to the massacre in which cavalrymen charged campaigners protesting against the restrictive parliamentary representation of the time in St Peter's Field Manchester leaving 15 dead and 700 injured. Recorded only a few miles from where it happened, Maxine Peake's performance makes the poem - a call for political action - resonate for a contemporary audience. We also hear eyewitness accounts from Samuel Bamford a radical reformer who led the group from Middleton and his wife Jemima Bamford performed by Jason Done and Christine Bottomley. Contemporary ballads written in the aftermath are sung by Jennifer Read. The Masque of Anarchy, with a specially composed sound design by Peter Rice, was directed by Sarah Frankcom. Discover the Peterloo cane in our Disrupt? Peterloo and Protest exhibition, one of the few items to have witnessed the Manchester massacre on 16 August 1819. It is believed the owner was at Peterloo as a protestor and dressed, like so many others, in his Sunday best with the walking cane a part of his attire, as was the fashion of the time. The Peterloo cane, whilst simple in design, is highly symbolic in significance, carrying the inscriptions “be brought to Justice” and “I was one of the dreadfull (sic) bludgeons seen on the plains of PETERLOO”. |

16 Aug 19 - 05:40 AM (#4004683) Subject: RE: Peterloo 200th anniversary From: GUEST,henryp Saturday 17 August; The Six Acts The Six Acts campaign are hosting an “Illegal Picnic” on Windmill St in front of the Manchester Central Convention Complex (formerly GMex), Saturday 17 August, 3pm, to commemorate the bicentenary of Peterloo and kick off the Six Acts campaign. The picnic site is on the original site of St Peters’s Field where the massacre occurred 200 years ago. There will be live entertainment by Manchester-based street band Cacophany Arkestra. Groups such as Real Democracy Movement, Unlock Democracy, Positive Money, People’s Assembly, Manchester Humanists, Friends of the Earth and Extinction Rebellion will also be joining the picnic, and presenting their proposals to reboot democracy to the gathered picnickers. Alongside the Six Acts launch there will be marches from Eccles and Salford commemorating Peterloo joining the picnic at 3pm. The website hosting the poll will open to public submissions during the picnic at 4pm. Anyone can submit a proposal to the Six Acts poll which should be a maximum of 100 words. |

This event will remember those who peacefully protested for democracy and freedom. Tandle Hill Country Park provided a great location for the people of Royton to practise their marching and drilling before the event and so remains a significant location with regards to the Peterloo Massacre. Around 3,000 people will perform a “combination of giant karaoke and autocue” on Friday near the square in Manchester where 18 people were killed and more than 650 injured by a sabre-wielding cavalry on 16 August 1819. The names of the dead will be read out at 1.30pm, the exact time when 200 years ago troops were ordered to break up the crowd of 60,000 protesters who had gathered peacefully to demand political reform. As the last name is read out 18 bells will ring from Manchester’s neo-Gothic Town Hall followed by a minute’s silence and the release of 18 ribbons of red smoke. Screens across the city will display all the names of the dead. Instead of a solemn civic ceremony, the event is designed to be an immersive, noise-filled show with a ticketed audience of 3,000 people but “no spectators, only performers”. The new monument, designed by the Turner prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller, was expected to be unveiled formally on Friday but was made public without any fanfare on Tuesday afternoon. |

16 Aug 19 - 11:54 AM (#4004732) Subject: RE: Peterloo 200th anniversary From: GUEST,Ray Just to add to henryp’s heads up on the central Manchester “re-enactment” - it didn’t involve 3000 people; well actually it did but they did it three times with 1000 at each. To be quite honest, it was more of a pretentious, left wing, vanity project with American influences. I don’t do “audience participation”, I never have and never will. If they had explained what was going to take place at the time they sent out invitations to those with Peterloo ancestors, I wouldn’t have bothered and saved my train fare. It started late, it poured with rain and people ignored the pre-event instructions not to bring umbrellas, the sound was bad - amplified drummers drowned out the speech. Whilst I have every sympathy with the homeless, deported refugees, people with disabilities etc. This was supposed to be a commemoration of Peterloo. I expect those in the “mejia” will tell us all how wonderful it was on tonights local telly. As for the memorial being unveiled last Tuesday; I suspect that was to save embarrassment. One wheelchair-borne cast member amusingly pointed out that they had designed a memorial with steps preventing him from getting access to it. |
