BS: Welsh Cricket & the CWC 2019

Whilst ODIs are my favourite form of cricket (as detailed in my poem, from WalkaboutsVerse, "Dot-Ball" ), it is disappointing that some very good Welsh cricketers are not participating in the CWC 2019 because, unlike Rugby Union and Association Football e.g., it is England AND Wales taking the field...not cricket?

Which ones? Which ones who are not participating would get into any of the teams which are participating? As far as I know, the last Welsh cricketer good enough to get into any world cup side was Simon Jones.

If Glamorgan, minus a few oversea players/plus a few more locals, competed as Wales, would they not be in the top 10, David?

No. Take out De Lange, Labuschange, Wagg, Cooke from that side, ant they wouldn't get anywhere near Zimbabwe of Afghanistan. In fact they don't even with those players. And which Welsh players elsewhere would get into the Afghanistan, Zimbabwe or Ireland side? Unlike Ireland, they don't now have a player of international calibre playing elsewhere.

I am not familiar enough with the current glamorgan first eleven and second eleven to know if they would be any more than an avrage county side, what would the line up be without overseas players

You can look them up on cricinfo. The ones I have heard of are Marnus Labuschange, who has played test cricket for Australia, Marchant de Lange who has played test and limited over international cricket for South Africa, and Billy Root who has a more famous brother, although he is a decent player. Then there are a couple more Australians, and a Dutchman. Graham Wagg played for England A in that past. Not one of these would be eligible to play for Wales. Their captain, David Lloyd, is Welsh, but has never come into consideration for England (for whom of course he is currently eligible).

Glamorgan as a side are reasonably high in the Division 2 table. So precisely an average county side. If you take out overseas players though, they couldn't put 11 on the field. You would have to make up the numbers by a trawl of village sides.

The chance to play for Wales may motivate more talented Welsh players to come through...?

When I was at school I wanted to play rugby and hated cricket..
and that was SW England...

It'll be more of an uphill struggle in Wales...

I just asked my mrs [who comes from the valleys]..

"What cricket !!??? nobody likes cricket in Wales..
Well.. maybe in the posh areas...?????
"

But, on the other hand, PFR, my auntie in north Wales said, albeit a few years ago, that cricket was becoming very popular in the area..?

Joking apart, the Scots have a national cricket team...would not a Welsh team beat them?

Scrums and tackles might enliven cricket..

A long tine ago but on Channel 9 in Australia, before repatriating, I recall watching Dennis Lilly kicking out at Javed Miandad; and chunky David Boon putting the shoulder in to some bowler after he just made the crease.

Wales would not beat Scotland. Scotland are good enough to run Ireland close.
