Folk Club Eccentrics

Subject: Folk Club Eccentrics
From: The Sandman

Does anyone remember an eccentric in the sheffield area who used to sit in club with an imaginary dog and occasionally bark.
anyone else remeber any other interesting eccentrics with dogs, oh yes   grisweld the super dog here A ventriloquist says he was quizzed by police for more than an hour after a woman claimed his PUPPET made lewd comments to her in the street.

David Sampson, 67, says a woman reported him after his dummy - Grisweld The Super Dog - hid down his trousers and was heard asking her to "have a feel".

He is alleged to have made the comments while he handed out leaflets for a Red Nose Day event outside the Bulls Head pub in Rugby, Warks., on February 14.

The former musician and comedian, who has not been charged, denies that the comments were made - because Grisweld "doesn't talk".

The dad-of-three was stunned when he received a letter on April 29 outlining the allegations and inviting him for a police interview.

Mr Sampson, who has been a ventriloquist for five years, claims he was interviewed for more than an hour at Rugby Police station in Warwickshire on May 3.

Mr Sampson, of Brinklow, near Rugby, Warks., said: "Grisweld and I were distributing leaflets at the time, and I was making jokes to passersby to raise interest in our event.

"The woman claimed that Grisweld gave her a lot of sexual abuse, and then hid in my trousers and said 'why don't you come and have a feel of this, missus?'

"But he would never do that, and I certainly wouldn't either.

"Grisweld doesn't talk, he never has done and never will do.

"And even if he did, he's a polite character anyway.

"Whenever he's appeared he's always under the vet, he's lost his bark, he doesn't speak.

"He's like Sooty. My dummy can't speak.

"It's impossible for him to fit in my trousers, especially as I was wearing a coat at the time.

"The woman even described him as an emu in her statement, which shows how little she knows about it."

Mr Sampson says he was initially questioned by police days after the woman reported him for sexual abuse.

He added: "Two police officers came to see me on a Saturday morning and took my statement about the meeting in the street.

"Then I had an email saying they would like me to come to the station and make a recorded interview.

"I said I didn't want to do that, then a PC came round the following day and said that if I didn't do a recorded interview voluntarily I would have to be arrested and taken down to the police station.

"I didn't make any offensive comments, and neither did Grisweld.

"At the station, I just said I hadn't done anything. I thought 'I'm not going to take Grisweld with me'.

"I had already spoken to the PC and pointed out that Grisweld could not physically get into my trousers.

"I have not been arrested, I have not been charged and I have not been put on police bail either.

"I think, in an age when you have robberies and break-ins that the police are not bothering to investigate, it's absolutely ridiculous to go to all the trouble of taking any action whatsoever.

"Had this happened, I would have expected it to have been reported back in February. It seems like the obvious time to report Grisweld.

"I will do whatever I can to fight for justice. We were trying to do something good for charity, so for it to end up like this is just awful.

"Grisweld is definitely innocent, okay.

"He did raise nearly £300 for Comic Relief, but I would imagine the cost to the taxpayer of that interview the other week - employing two officers to listen to it for an hour and a solicitor - would have probably cost more than we raised for Red Nose Day.

"It's a disgrace."

Not seen him for some years now

What a disappointment that the 'eccentric' you give so many tedious lines to is just yet another boring misogynist. Unbelievable in 20019. Les Barker is one who hasn't resorted to such unnecessary hostility towards the majority of the population. The Sheffield prat is an idiot and doesn't deserve the respect of the description of eccentric.

For people in the UK tonight at 8pm on R4 a programme about such people will probably draw attention to several eccentrics, several will be women, who have more class than to attack the opposite sex.

I am unaware that taking an imaginary dog to a folk club is anything else but eccentric ,
how is that misogynistic?
if he has committed some other offence that i am unaware of when posting, is that relevant?or how i supposed to know.

You know what it feels like when you're being wound up?

It feels like this.
Trolls don't have to make sense. It works better if they don't, so you have to respond to set them straight.

I seriously wish people would get some different hobbies.

Oh dear. I am shocked about the response. I am not a troll, just offering a normal response to offensive content about a sexist prat. Says a lot about the folk scene and how unwelcoming it is. It would be refreshing to hear about people not having to defend schoolboy behaviour when they are in their dotage. By people also in their dotage. Grow up!

guest.
You know nothing about Dave Samson and the case involving his daughter who was allegedly a rape victim, yet you call him a misogynist and a sexist prat, you are very wide of the mark.
guest cj..did anyone apart from you say anything was sexy?this was posted by DaveSampson
.Last week I received a phone call from Detective Inspector Manze of the Metropolitan police. He told me he was in charge of the Fixated Threat Assessment Centre. (I had used the Freedom of Information Act to find out who was in charge.) He told me they had not ordered Rugby police to arrest me in May 2008. I was getting ready for work when I was arrested at my home. I phoned solicitor Richard Best who said he would meet me at Rugby police station. I found out later , that he had gone to the police station and was told it was not a criminal matter as the Fixated Threat Assessment Centre had ordered I be held. I was held in a secure unit for 4 months. They claimed I was going to murder the Chairman of Warwickshire Police Authority. As a result of my arrest & being held I lost my full time job at MEL Secure Systems. I met with Mark Pawsey MP a few weeks ago and about a week ago he passed me a letter from a Home Office minister Sarah Newton MP slagging me off. I have been subjected to a smear campaign by people connected with Warwickshire Police & the former Warwickshire police authority. As I was detained in the West Midlands I have also sent a copy of a new letter I have written to Mark Pawsey MP to Dave Thompson The Chief Constable of West Midlands Police. The reason someone wanted me held prisoner was because I had taken civil court action against the then Chairman of Warwickshire Police Authority. On July 3rd 2008 I missed the civil court case at Rugby court as I was being held against my will. In November 2004 Sergeant Philip Growden of Rugby police pleaded Guilty to misconduct at an IPCC tribunal after we complained about him. Despite attempts by BBC News & The Mail on Sunday to expose my family's problems with the police nothing was resolved. I have been subjected to serious abuse by Warwickshire police. I have also found out from Lord Goldsmith that they had withheld evidence from the CPS about a serious crime which took place in Brinklow. I now hope there will be a proper criminal investigation into a number of former Rugby police officers & former members of Warwickshire police authority. I think the people have a right to know the truth about how the Independent Police Complaints Commission has failed to deal properly with serious corruption by police. It is over 2 years since I made a speech about police corruption in the Houses of Parliament and still this government hasn't done a thing about it. Please copy & paste my message and send it to your MP. Dave Sampson

Many. many years ago I was at Bracknell Folk Festival.

The security guy was a complete pain in the proverbial.

He worked for "Bank Security" and he and his ill tempered Alsatian dog managed on the Friday and Saturday to upset a good many of the wonderful people there.

On the Sunday morning one of the good people turned up wearing a Safari suit short pants and a "military jacket" and wearing a badge that said "Wank Security".

He also had a starched lead with no dog.

I don't know who he was, but if he ever reads this, thank you, oh thank you, oh thank you

Eccentric Dave Sampson may have been - but he sure knew how to run a superb folk club. I've lost count of the amazing acts I saw courtesy of Dave.

Come to think of it, I think he ran The Roebuck on Erdingtpn High Street as well.

Carthy, Capstick , Derek Brimstone, Sidney Carter, Vin, Jeremy Taylor, Ian Campbell, Waterfall, loads of others.

We weren't best mates or anything. I don't think he was keen on what I did - I was just starting out - there wasn't much to be keen on.But he wasn't pushy, he'd always help you get a floorspot and present you. And he wasn't out to use his club to launch his own career.

I heard he had his problems - but bloody hell! It was the 1970's - the only ones not having problems were dead from the neck up.

Seeing as though this David Sampson stuff was initially reported over two years ago, do you think he’ll thank you for dragging it all back up, Dick? Especially when you’re posting all sorts of other, far more serious cases, alongside it, as though they’re connected?

Do me a favour and don’t bring up my apple stealing conviction of 1979

Absolutely agree Al, someone who ran and is still running a successful folk club, in my opinion a lovable eccentric., and who was helpful to floorsingers.
as far as i am concerned eccentrics make the UK folk scene more colourful and interesting.
Nick Dow as you very well know, Thin John was my half brother, you asked what happened to him?
he died after a long and not very pleasant illness similiar to Alzheimers, i find the tone of your e mail offensive and unpleasant

cj , furthermore an anonymous guest accused Dave of being a misogynist, as i know him personally and know that he has said to me in the past, that he wants people to know about the injustice he and his daughter and family received from the police. i thought it necessaary to mention it, to counter the ridiculous slur that he was a misogynist.

Many years ago Isaw JHW THREE SHEETS to the wind, he was sailing along and he managed to walk through a live electric fence unscathed while singing a long ballad, despite receiving a shock he showed a stiff upper lip and carried on singing without hesitation deviation or repetition, A YORKSHIRE ECCENTRIC

Well I suppose its hard for some people to comprehend, but the folk clubs and what we created in them have been a major part of our lives.

And the folk clubs, not just the dickheads on BBC4, are something that enabled and initiated our creativity. Ordinary people - not just the stars of Glastonbury, and the people written about in Froots. Ordinary people.

And the weird experiences and oddballs that these folk clubs inevitably brought to the surface was part of the buzz that meant you didn't sit at home with your parents like the poor sods in the Royle family.

well folk music isn't all crochets and quavers, its people...

and some very weird buggers frequently turned up.

There was Mike (spoons) Sealey in the folk clubs of Exeter and Exmouth.

There was a bloke called Nail at Andy Caven's club in Walsall.

I think they would have fitted in better with folk clubs nowadays. I popped into a folk club tonite but they were all involved in playing a dismal folk dance tune - all the violins out of tune.

In a way, the weirdoes have finally won. Mike and Nail would have fitted in well with that lot.
