Boys O' Brexit

I heard a very funny and topical song last weekend.

It was composed by Alan Murray and can be found here.

But on the other hand here is a boy of Brexit, and sadly it soon gets a lot less funny. Check out his online rantings

Read it. It totally fails to scan to the original "Tom O Bedlam", and is highly biased against Brexit.

There may be some who think it is a worthwhile parody, but on a music website (ignoring political views) they will probably be in a minority.

(From a purely musical viewpoint)

Mention of "£350 billion" is (presumably) a reference to the quote on the bus of £350 million.

Remainers may think this is a great song, but it is a very poor attempt at a parody.

If you google it is amazing how much Brexit related parody and original music there is, both for and against. Since a lot of it seems to be made by 'ordinary people', I'm thinking it maybe comes within the definition of 'folk music' supported by some folk?

One of the best I found is this

Nigel,

I realise that it doesn't scan too well but I think it was written that way deliberately especially the chorus endings.

350 billion. Maybe a typo or a deliberate exaggeration to further expose the ridiculousness of "the lie"? I don't know but I'm sure the author is well enough informed to know the exact figure.

"Remainers may think this is a great song"   "highly biased against Brexit."

That's most reasonably minded people whom I know, actually.

Nigel has it right, dreadful load of drivel.

Not uncommon result for such parodies written by Scottish political "activists". Strange really as Glasgow used to be famous for it's ability to come out with side-splittingly funny parodies of popular songs. Must be that when it comes to politics the "red mists" sense of outraged sensibilities clouds the process.

Here's my two cent.

The EU has a policy that can't be misconstrued.
Austerity's the way that the
British working man is screwed.
Germany has called the shots and UK's in the hole
Along with Greece and Italy, starvation is the goal.

Brexit! Brexit! Before the EU wrecks it.
Get out from under the thumb
Of the banks who beat the drum.
Brexit! Brexit! Don’t let them try to annex it.
Freedom for the UK, now, that’s the only way.

Austerity's a policy of Tories, not EU.
If you hope Brexit will end it, then it's more fool you.

And coming out of Europe would not free us from the bankers;
For they're pals with stockbrokers, like Farage and other characters

And you have to ask if after it we'd just be changing thumb
Being then under one belonging to a foul wind from a bum.

Oh beauteous wall 'gainst the foamy bright channel
Fabricated from unicorns, hot air and flannel
We will tear down the bridges and built you like chumps
Then we'll bow to the rulers Left-pondian - the Trumps.

In the spirit of accuracy, The tune recorded by Steeleye Span & I believe, credited as 'Trad' was written by Dave Moran & Nic Jones & arranged by Nic Jones & myself, Nigel Paterson, several years before SS got their grubby mitts on it.

The Tories bow down before the mighty EU.
Misinformation keeps the issue hidden away from you.
Austerity is here to stay, and Brussels pulls the strings.
The puppet master makes UK dance until it brings

Brexit! Brexit! Brussels collects it
The British Pound-ed into the ground
And you can hear the angry sound
Brexit! Brexit! The economy affects it.
It’s time to hear the cry, not a specious alibi.

It’s time to be courageous and not give them a chance
The fool is one who hesitates and joins their little dance.
They’ve got you buffaloed by scaring you to bits.
But unless you take a stand you’ll dump the country in the pits.

Brexit ! Brexit! The City of London rejects it.
They’d rather see you poor
So they can grab some more.
Brexit!   Brexit! You’ll find that what comes next
It won’t be quite the same, and as terrible as you claim.

Is somebody here trying for a job as Fromage's court minstrel?

Alan Murray: "What is beyond debate is that the Brexiteers are a deeply unattractive, out of touch, megalomaniac, manipulative and untrustworthy bunch of people ..."

Andy7: "What is beyond debate, Mr. Murray, is that 'What is beyond debate' is an arrogant, and philosophically very lazy, way of introducing your assumption that all reasonable people must obviously agree with you, meaning that there is no need to have any kind of debate about your obnoxious and ridiculous generalisations."

(Btw, I'm a 'Brexit agnostic', I can appreciate the arguments on both sides, and won't bang the drum for either.)

One for Christmas!

SFA or Sweet FA. Tune: White Christmas

(Scottish Football Association)

I'm dreaming of a hard Brexit,
We'll all be free with passports blue
They'll be no more Froggies,
Just Jacob Rees-Moggies
And Santa will need a visa too.

Yes, I'm dreaming of a hard Brexit,
We'll play at home and not away
There'll be no more friendlies with Spain
For Brexit means Brexit, not remain.

Oh, I'm dreaming of a hard Brexit,
Where every football player's a Scot,
They'll be no more strangers
To play for Rangers,
And Europeans can't be bought.

Yes, I'm dreaming of a hard Brexit
It's coming closer day by day.
When there'll only be the SFA
'Cause there's no one left who wants to play.
