Philadelphia area Gathering for Kendall

Subject: Philadelphia area Gathering for Kendall
From: Marymac90

As most of you know, Kendall is going to be travelling to Florida this coming week. He will be staying at the home I share in Blue Bell Weds. night. I thought it would be nice to have a little get-together with music and food for him while he's here.

It will start with a potluck supper at 6:30, and then music, made by whoever comes, open circle style, at 7:30. It won't go super late (I don't think!), 'cause Kendall wants to get started considerably before noon the next day! If you're anywhere near Philadelphia, please join us-there's plenty of room!

Blue Bell is northwest of Phila, and just north of Norristown. It's easy to get here from the PA turnpike, the Blue Route, Rtes. 76, 202, 73, 422, Germantown or Ridge Pikes. For map fans, I live at the intersection of Thayer, Erb's Mill, and Arlington. For directions in English, please EMAIL me, at: Marymac90@aol.com If my computer blows up tonight, and you can't get through, or don't get a response, use this alternate email address: Leonobol@voicenet.com and please put Marymac in the subject line.

So if you're in PA, NJ, DEL, northeast MD, or otherwise in commuting distance, please come, bring instruments, some vittles or libations, and maybe a musically-inclined friend.

Mary McCaffrey

Kendall Morse, from Maine. See threads: I'm outta here, or the one on Mudcatters chartering a sailing ship. BTW, the above will be happening on Weds, Jan. 5th. And you're welcome to come, Don, even if you don't know who Kendall is.

Did you mean a paean in the ass, Don? Or maybe a pane in the ass, for those who want a view...moved forward, Mary, it could be a womb with a view...

Whatever, give him a good sendoff.

I see that Marymac90 has done a do for Kendall & too bad I can't go. But I note her address. Certainly it's come up many times, but perhaps she'll have the answer to One of Life's Great Mysteries.

Back in history, there were occasional lists of place-names in America that had snide sexual-connotting inferences. This was a Good Thing if you were a 10-year old boy or read Reader's Digest. One of the standards was Blue Balls, PA.

This place name has long since disappeared, if it ever rreally existed. One theory was that the town got tired of snide tourists and changed it to Blue Bell.

I don't mean to sour perfectly good mythology (ie, that the town of Blue Balls does or did exist) but I'd be interested in the facts in just this case.

Blue Bell PA and Blue Ball PA (not the absence of "s" in the second town name) are two separate towns and both can be found both on Yahoo maps and my may given me by the governor's office (through the tourist bureau). They both exist. Blue Bell is near Norristown (and I hope both to see Marymac and meet Kendall this Wed.! thanks; Blue Ball is where PA 23 crosses US 322, near Coatesville.

What is it with that part of PA? Within 20 miles of "Blue Ball," you can score with a "Bird in Hand"--get ready in "Bareville" so you can enjoy "Intercourse" which puts you in "Paradise."

And isn't that basically a part of the Amish country........

Who said the Amish don't know how to have fun? You know they say there's always a baby boom 9 months after power outages, and candles=romance, don't you know. So maybe their eschewing of electricity is something we should explore (for more than one reason).

Come on, admit you were disappointed when the power DIDN'T go off as you got a midnight smooch....

Hey Mary, got a T-1 or DSL at your house, and a real fast computer with a camera and audio? We could do Mudcat Radio from your place.

Bert and I would like to come, but it is exactly when we do Mudcat Radio. Unless you all want to come to us and be on the show? I'll think about all this and see if I can swing anything to get there. I am flying back home today, so I won't get to see this thread till monday morning.

First, Blue Bell did originally have another name-Pigeontown! I guess because it had so many, and they were a game bird back then. Spaw was absolutely right when he explained about Blue Ball, etc.

Max! I didn't think you'd be back doing Mudcat radio till next week! No, we don't have all that high-tech stuff here, and it's all Mac, except for a VERY ancient thing that runs DOS. No camera, and no T-1 line, just regular phone lines. So we'd better do it in West Chester.

That's a fair way from me, so I don't know if doing a gathering at my house afterward makes any sense, although we could. Maybe go to the bar downstairs, or just hang out at the mudcat office, or go to somebody's home near there? You and Bert should express an opinion on that. I can bring some food, since I was planning on cooking something if it was at my house.

Pete! Thanks for inviting me to the party N Y Eve! I had a real nice time, didn't get home till 5am! Can you still make it if we do this in West Chester? You could come to Blue Bell, and we could go down together. You could sleep on a couch in the office at my house-Kendall's got the guest room. Besides, it's gonna smell like ferrets if I don't get up there and air it out!

Talk to me, people! Let me know what the possible parameters are here! I'l do my best to set up whatever you want.

Love,

Mary

There is still a Ticklenaked Pond.

Of course, after last week's Supreme Court decision, the rednecks are saying the whole state ought to be called Sodom....

OK, I found my own post, thank goodness! I know I'm inept with computers, but I didn't know I was THAT inept.

OK, people, talk to us. It's about 45 mins. south from my place to mudcat, at that time of evening, maybe a bit less to get home later when traffic has abated.

I know Pete wants to meet Kendall, and he lives considerably north of me. I haven't heard from Hagbard, but I know he lives a little north of me. I take it Max and Bert will be in West Chester doing Mudcat radio. I don't know where Bert C is, and I don't know who else is around here.

If I have this thing at my house, I can invite some not-yet-mudcatted musician friends of mine, and my housemates, of course. How many would come if it was at my house in Blue Bell? How many would come if it was at mudcat in West Chester? Do we have any place in West Chester to go afterwards, besides hanging out at mudcat studio?

Can we please get this figured out today? Kendall, I give your vote the deciding factor. You're the one on the l o n g trip, who will lose resting time by us all trucking down to West Chester. What's your fondest wish? Do any other mudcatters plan to come? Please post here, or message me, or email me at Marymac90@aol.com Thanks.

All right! Kendall says party at my house, so we'll party at my house! We're back on the original schedule of gather at 6:30 for a potluck at my house in Blue Bell (NOT Blue Ball!)

We'll call in to mudcat radio. I'd record it if it was worth while to do so on cassette-I don't have any of that fancy cd-burning stuff, technopeasant that I am! Max and Bert, why don't you come up after the broadcast?

I think to make Kendall's FONDEST wish come true, we'll have to invite some more female musicians, so all you guys bring one or two along! Please RSVP! I hate to plan a party, and not have the remotest idea who's coming, or IF anybody's coming! Email me at Marymac90@aol.com See you Wednesday!

Marymac, I wish I could be there. I'm an old Philly boy, and all this talk about bawdy Pennsylvania geography is getting me almost homesick. But I will be in Philly the last week of March, and would love to come to a music gathering. Unfortunately, the weekends of the 25th and the 1st I'll be in Oregon and Boston, respectively; so it would have to be during the week. I know that's tough, so if it doesn't work maybe I'll try another time. Or you folks could come to Hawaii...

Aloha,
Mark

Mark-poor lonesome Philly boy way out there in Hawaii.

We'll have to send you a Phluffia care package through the computer cables. It has a cheesesteak WITH, and an Italian hoagie, both on Amoroso rolls, from South Phila. Also a nice, hot batch of soft pretzels with mustard, some Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, and a big assortment of Tastycakes, not stinting on the Butterscotch Krimpets. Then some Black Cherry Wishniak soda to wash it all down.

Did I forget anything? Let me know and I'll stuff it into the modem on the next go-round. Oh, and here's some feathers dropped by the Fancies, as they strutted in the Convention Center (gasp!) At least the rest of the guys-and WOMEN-still strut their stuff on the street, but not on Broad Street anymore-on Market!!!

Oh, yeah, here's a video of the movie "Rocky", and a t-shirt with a pic of Betsy Ross sewing up the crack in the Liberty Bell, or some such thing.

You're welcome, Mark, and when you come this way in March, be sure to pack up some of that Hawaiian sun, and some of those tropical breezes, too. And I don't think Kendall would mind you bringing some of those tropic maids from Old Maui, if he happens to be migrating back north with the birds then. Though maybe he'll see enough tropic maids in Florida.

Mary, you just made this ex-Flulfyan very very nostalgic. But don't forget the Iggles bobbing-head doll, the SEPTA bus schedule (filed under Fiction at the Logan Square Library), Breyer's vanilla ice cream with the little black specks (actually we can even get that here in Hawaii now!), Abbott's milk, a corned beef special from Bain's Deli (I wasn't a vegetarian when I lived there), and the autographed picture of Frank Rizzo. Wow, Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets, and Frank's Black Cherry Wishniak...I'd almost forgotten! But, no Mummers on Broad Street? Say it ain't so!

Aloha, and see yiz

Mark, How bout dem Iggles?!!! Dey didn't lose all der games diz year!!! Septa hasn't had a strike for maybe a coupla years-must be time soon.

Breyers, da dirty ratz, closed their plant in my old neighborhood in West Phila. Now who knowz where it'z made? Same with Scott Paper-now who knows where da stuff ya wipe yer bum wid comes from!!! I think Abbott's Dairy is long gone too-I have a milk crate or two from them that holds my vinyl collection. Bain's deli is still around-it has a number of different locations, no less.

I actually saw Frank Sr's funeral procession-what a relief!!! Frank Jr is on city council, but he doesn't have his dad's charisma-thank goodness!!!

The Mummer's are not on Broad St, nor 2 St. either--they have a much shorter route on Market St. now. But, most amazing, the fancies do not march on the street AT ALL!!!! They strut their stuff INSIDE the convention center, and you have to PAY to see 'em!!!!!

Harpgirl-As best I know, Kendall leaves Maine Tues, spends Tues. night in CT with Sandy and Caroline, drives here on Weds. Thurs. he aims to make SC, and Friday, Jacksonville. Stay tuned for further information, or listen to mudcat radio.

Dear Kendall,

Well, what are you waiting for? Put Seamus in the car and come on down! So far, we're having The Winter That Wasn't, and I don't mind a bit. It'll be up in the 60's again today, though it might change and rain later. That's ok, it'll help my pansies keep blooming.

I have about 12 to 14 people coming so far, and about half are women, so you won't be deprived of feminine companionship, at least during the get-together. I'm gonna cook up a storm, so you won't be starved, either. If you want to hang with the men, and talk football or computers, that's up to you! We women can always entertain ourselves!!!

Have a safe journey!

Mary, you are breaking my heart! NOT on Broad Street? Somehow, I always managed to be NOT in Phila on NY Day, but loved the thought of the Mummers there when I WAS walking down it.

Sigh, you make me nostalgic too. Only worked and played there for a few years, and lived there for less, but gee I loved it. I really consider myself a displaced farm girl at heart, but I love Phila.

Anyone remember Hands Across America? Our gang was stationed RIGHT in front of the Liberty Bell!

As Tom Petty says, Oh, the stories we could tell.

I used to hang my hat(and sometimes work) at a wonderful place called Chaucers, at 20 and Lombard, my favorite neighborhood. Or was it 19th? Anyway, it would be a true soul place to a Mudcatter if it hasn't changed much. But so much does. Anyone in town to check it out?

Warm a Jameson's for me.

Art- Is a ball wash like a car wash? I thought men just used a washrag in the shower, like women do for similiar personal cleansing? And you have to go to a golf course for this? How inconvenient! So that's why there's that funky...... And you want me to ask Kendall about this-I've never even MET him before! Oh, never mind!!!!

Dani- I think I have been in Chaucer's maybe once, long ago. It's still listed in the phone book, though. I'll check it out again sometime when I'm down that way. I liked another little place in that neighborhood, Maryam's Cafe, but that's gone now.

I'll have to send you one of those Phila. care packages like I sent Mark. Let me just turn the modem allll the waaay UP! There it gooooes! Come back and see us sometime!

Love from Phluffia,

Mary

Okay, gang. Get ready to party! Kendall's asleep now, after a quiet evening of dinner (Maine lobster provided by the guest of honor!) and swapping a few songs. Trouble may lie ahead, however. In the morning he's gonna look for a garage with a good transmission man to check out a worrisome growl that seems to have gotten worse in the last ten miles or so of his trip. Cross your fingers for him.

If all goes well, he'll head down 87 to 287 to 202 to Blue Bell, or whatever it is. If all does not go well, he'll be in touch with you and life here will go back to (sob!) meatloaf.

I sent a personal to Miss Mary Mac, Mac, Mac (all dressed in black, black, black) informing her and the rest of you that the car's problems proved to be severe. Kendall has turned around and headed back to Maine where he knows a good transmission man who is "reasonable" in price. There ain't no such animal around here! Let's all just hope the old tin-lizzie holds together long enough to get him home!

My suggestion is that all of you enjoy an evening of Mudcatting around (musically speaking, of course) and hoist a jar in Kendall's honor. Maybe later in the year he will once again head south and all of you will get a chance to hear him sing "I Just Don't Look Good Naked Anymore" (a real keeper!)

Have fun, everyone. Sorry Kendall won't be there to share it with you.
