911 was functioning well but they were getting thousands of calls from all over Columbus for the same reason Kat!!! The news crew that was reporting was standing in an alcove outside of 911 headquarters because a stray had just broken a window down the block!!! Unbelievable. Welcome to Iraq.

Yes, I am here in the Montana Rockies, the Gallatin valley ringed by the Spanish Peaks, the Bridger Range, the Tobacco Root Range, and the Madison Range. I got up at 5:30 for a long walk with the dog while Ryan delivered papers. An unusually mild January first morning, the sky is turning pink and light blue. I phoned a friend who lives on a high bench in the center of the valley, and he could look towards town in the foothills last night and watch fireworks going off all across the base of the mountains as people created their own fireworks displays. I envied the Paris midnight celebration. There were many cities and countries with very creative and meaningful celebrations that I watched on tv yesterday. The drummers and pipers on the edge of Portugal, the Maori in New Zealand, the edge of massive waterfall in South America, it was great to see all the cultures around the world expressing their identity in their celebrations. I really was unimpressed by what the U.S. did in comparison.

Ditto, Alice. I was esp. impressed by the PBS coverage (except for one announcer) and all of the indigenous music which was celebrated all over. Your valley sounds beautiful this morning.

Happy New Year Rocky Mountain Folkies!!!!! I don't usually sit down and watch the telly, however, last night was so unusual. I was totally unimpressed by NYC's fete, however, I was impressed by the doins in D.C. I particularly enjoyed the "show" on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial with various and sundry noteables recited passages.

I'm a liberal, for gun control, and for social programs, however, I am also a staunch patriot with a great love for our flag and the history of how our country began. The scene at the Lincoln Memorial gave me chills.

This is simply my personal feelings. Let's not take up time debating where I should feel this way ... moonchild

I had to be asleep long before midnight here last night, but I did see the NYC ball drop with the ads for Discover credit card flashing, and did see the Washington Monument with some fireworks before I hit the hay. Although I like the Gypsy Kings recordings, I wasn't impressed with watching them on a stage in Miami as midnight came. I kept wondering, where are all the Native American tribal dances and music that could have been broadcast? Did anyone see anything like that from the US coverage?

Alice ... I was channel surfing and didn't see anything like that, which surprised me, too. I was expecting something from your part of the US, Alaska, or Canada ... but nothing. I read in the Fairbanks Daily New-Miner online that Fairbanks was threatening to cancel their festivities because of bad weather. It was an editorial regarding lack of conviction. Having lived there recently for six years, the editorial was right on. A sad statement, indeed ... moonchild

Alice, I kept wondering the same thing. Finally, late, did see a little bit of a Native American dance for veterans, from Denver, if I remember correctly.

No debate, MC, just an observtion that being liberal, like you and me, isn't exclusive of being patriotic,too.:-)

Anybody heard from LeeJ???? Oh, LEEJ?? BANJOMAN CO????? You guys awake, yet??? YooHoo!?

Hey there.

I got up just a couple of hours ago. I worked until 2 a.m. getting our "Millennium Extra" edition out, and then sat around visiting and drinking champagne until the presses rolled. So I didn't get home until 3 a.m. and have now slept later than I have in years.

We had the television on in the newsroom and at every hour all through the day and night a crowd would gather in front of the set to see the next time zone welcome the year. It was so amazing. But I did think the "Discover Card" greeting was about the most lacking in class that I've ever seen. I would NEVER have a Discover card now. What moron thought THAT was a good idea?

I thought the Washington, D.C., celebration was nice -- not spectacular, but worthy. San Francisco I liked a lot, but I don't think anyone outdid Paris for urban beauty and London for impressive use of flash explosives. Simply incredible. I kept worrying about all the asthmatics in the crowd, however.

It's a lovely day today way up here at the top of the Laramie Range, and I'm off to walk my doggies in the sunshine.

Happy Day!

ww

So, why didn't anyone in the US who was part of the programming decisions for world broadcast not think of something done in New Orleans, The Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, The Great Smokey Mountains, Carnegie Hall, Yosemite at sunrise or Sequoia, .... sorry, but I'm not keen on the Las Vegas strip being our representation to the world. Yes, I'm disappointed in how we came across as paranoid and crassly commercial. (But I had a nice new year's day.)

... that should have been sunset, not sunrise, - anyway, I can image many images of America that would have been wonderful to share with the rest of the world.

Hey, MAYBE NEXT YEAR! I hope they do another 'round the world greeting of the new year broadcast to the globe for 2001!! I can hear the music playing now as the sun rises on that date... dah, dah, dah DAHDA.

Sorry, Kat! I'd have responded sooner but I just emerged from my Y2K Survival Bunker because my daughter forgot her Nintendo game. I'm headed back down after sending this message, at least until we hear the "ALL CLEAR" signal.Funny, so far the Post-Apocalyptic World looks a hell of a lot like the old one.
