Despite this being a bit difficult to read w/o using either of the two suggestion posted there, you can make out all the lyrics. However, as is, there is no way to copy and paste.

This is a powerful song. We included it in the "Rich & Poor" Chapter of the Rise Again Songbook. I thought I had donne a thread on the song for our database backing up the songbook, but I guess I hadn't. So, thanks for the request - it gave me to opportunity to fix that omission.

MORE THAN ENOUGH
(Robb Johnson)

There’s always the money for missiles & tanks
There’s always the money for generals & banks
There’s always the money for new ways to kill
But a limited budget for you if you’re ill
Yes there’s always enough for a war
But there’s never enough for the poor

There’s always the money for tunnels and roads
For opera and ballet, but not jobs and homes
For MPs’ expenses & fat subsidies
But there’s never the money for nurseries
And the well-off they always take more
So there’s never enough for the poor

There’s always the money for tests they can pass
Or fail you for not being white middle class
There’s always the goodies for those with most greed
But never enough for those in most need
There’s a pay-rise if you’re on the board,
But there’s never enough for the poor

Consider the little of life that we know
We bring nothing, take nothing, pass through and go
We’re all of us poor when it comes to the night
In need of the darkness, in need of the light
If we learned to want less and love more
There’d be enough for the poor

(tag) If we learned to want less & love more / There’d be enough…
’Cos there’s more than enough for us all

D A G A / / G - D G / 1st / D A G - / D A D -

(tag) D A G A / / G - D G / 1st / D A G - (5x)

I find I often like Roy Bailey's version more than the author's recording.

Screw-up on my part. Forget the link I posted @ 8:04 PM

However this link goes to a clearly enunciated version of the song which should be easy to copy down.

So, do you like the song as much as I do, Starship?

Joe,

I think you've got an important typo. I also think that one of the lines is slightly different than you have ... at least according to the recording by the composer on YouTube

The line "Consider how little of life that we know" clearly got stuck in the wrong place: it should be the first line of the fourth verse.

In the first two lines of the third verse I hear Robb sing slightly different words than you have. In the first, the tests are such that they cannot pass. That's why, in the second line, they fail. In addition, I don't think it's "I'll fail ya". None of the rest of the song is in the first person singular; I think this line stays in the third person as well: "A failure".

There's always the money for tests they can't pass
A failure for not being white middle-class

Finally, in the fourth verse, fourth line, Robb definitely sings "In need of the darkness, in need of the light". However, I feel it makes much more sense to sing "Afraid of the darkness, in need of the light", as do one or two of the OTHER people who sing it on YouTube. After all, there must be some reason for needing light: like being afraid of the dark.

BB,
NightWing

Thanks for pointing out my mistakes. I corrected them in my post. Luckily, they turned out correct in print.
I'll stick with "tests they can pass," though - but there are still some inaccuracies I'm not comfortable with. I really tried hard to get all the lyrics right for the songbook, and I cringe every time I come across something I missed. It's a lot harder than I thought it would be. And when we relied on lyrics supplied by the songwriters, we got MORE inaccuracies.

That's Pip Collings singing with Robb on the YouTube recording Joe linked to, and Steafan Hannigan on pipes.

A few very minor corrections to NightWing's lyrics (which I've put in caps.

There's always the money for missiles and tanks
LIKE there's always the money for generals and banks
There's always the money for new ways to kill

But there's never enough for the poor

AND there's always the money for tunnels and roads
For opera and ballet, but not jobs and homes
For MPs' expenses and fat subsidies
But there's never the money for more nurseries [MORE isn't there]
And the well-off, they always take more
But there's never enough for the poor

There's always the money for tests they CAN pass
A failure for not being white middle-class
There's always the goodies for those with most greed

Consider THE little of life that we know
WE bring nothing, take nothing, pass through, and go
We're all of us poor when it comes to the night
IN NEED [already noted by NW] of the darkness, in need of the light
If we'd learn to want less and love more
There'd be enough for the poor

If we'd learn to want less and love more
There'd be enough for the poor
Cause there's more than enough for us all

Robb Johnson appeared on BBC TV from the Labour Party conference in Brighton last week, leading them in singing The Red Flag.

Thanks to NightWing and Starship for the comments on the lyrics. I posted from a draft copy of the Rise Again songbook. I think the final print version came out OK, but I can see that I missed some things. I proofread that book three times before it went to print, and other people proofread it also, but still some mistakes slipped through. Working on a 1200-song songbook was a daunting task.

Martin Simpson has recorded this on his latest album 'Rooted'. He has a note about playing it for his father-in-law, Roy Bailey, in the hospice just before his death.

Thank you, Joe. Much appreciated. But NightWing did all the work.

PS I got a kick out of the following. "And when we relied on lyrics supplied by the songwriters, we got MORE inaccuracies." My chuckle for the day.

There was a songwriter's site I used to visit, and every one of the songs had some mistake in the lyrics. I wondered if they did it on purpose so they'd know who got the song off their page. The problem with that is the mistakes tend to propagate.
