In today's weather I see that California is getting rain, pretty much over the whole state. Is it good news or is it going from bad to worse? |

If you can see the top, it's going to rain. Off topic, thinking of Skye I remember the pub in Broadford (way back in 1974) that had a circular sign behind the bar, done like an American coin, that read around the edge "In God we trust. If it is gentle rain, that will be the effect. If it's a gully-washer, all bets are off. |

If there's a reasonable amount of rain and snow runoff, the wildflowers in California are absolutely spectacular. The last two years were great, and I took full advantage of them. The best blooms are in desert areas that have had even a small amount of rain. The most legendary spot for wildflowers is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in San Diego and Imperial Counties. It's not quite at the Mexican border, but I came across a rather spooky Border Patrol checkpoint in the park one time - they were watching me stop for a pee a mile away. And in the middle of the park is the town of Borrego Junction, and in the center of town is Carlee's Place, a bar that serves the most amazing seafood gazpacho (like cold, spicy cioppino). Gazpacho, beer, wildflowers, and desert bighorn sheep. What a grand combination! -Joe- |

Fires: I have a sister-in-law only 10 miles from Carmel Valley, site of the River Fire. She tells me she is safe, and I have to believe her. Fortunately, I have signed up for bulletins from her local TV station, so I can keep tabs on things. The Internet can be wonderful sometimes. |
