27 Dec 19 - 01:27 PM (#4025118) Subject: RE: BS: facebook and posts from dead performers From: Joe Offer A lot of performer accounts are maintained by family members to honor the performer, so don't condemn them all. On top of that, maintaining a deceased person's account gives one authentic home for communications regarding that person. But yes, I suppose that friend requests from dead people might well be fraudulent. -Joe- |

27 Dec 19 - 01:33 PM (#4025121) Subject: RE: BS: facebook and posts from dead performers From: Rob Naylor A couple of my climbing friends who've died over the last few years have had their FB accounts stay live. I have to say that I quite like it. Their pages have turned into "in memoriam" pages with a constantly expanding stream of stories, pictures and articles keeping their memories "alive". There are a couple of peopme I knew who've died and who I would rather not hear about.... I just blocked them as soon as I knew they'd died. |

27 Dec 19 - 02:44 PM (#4025127) Subject: RE: BS: facebook and posts from dead performers From: Stilly River Sage A friend request isn't the same as an active page sending out birthday announcements. That's a human clicking a button and bringing in new eyeballs. You should search on that name and see if you're already a friend of the original account. If there is only one account and someone there is trying to add you to the friends, that's one thing, but if it is a spoofed name and account, report the fraudulent one. |

27 Dec 19 - 03:03 PM (#4025129) Subject: RE: BS: facebook and posts from dead performers From: Stilly River Sage Facebook sends members a form that allows designation of accounts once the owner has passed away. They can be closed, can be frozen, or become a memorial account. Perhaps your friend didn't get a chance to make that designation; his heirs still can. |

28 Dec 19 - 05:54 AM (#4025167) Subject: RE: BS: facebook and posts from dead performers From: Mr Red Mmmmmmmm .............. Hacked accounts and cloned accounts are the vectors for political Fakebookery. If it is a friend's request from a dead person, it is not the dead person. It is someone in Nigeria, or St Petersberg. Report it IMMEDIATELY. Maybe they are not aware he is dead, maybe they see it not active and think you will think it needs re-newing. It only takes a relatively small number of accounts to swing an election. If I look for myself on Fakebook there are about 4 of us. If someone wanted to clone the account it is easier for others to check. It is simplicity itself to clone an account, my experience with account verification would suggest it is not a barrier at all. I have had one friend's request from somebody who is already a friend but my reaction to it would have warned them off trying with other friends, one who is now dead. Why do you think I call it Fakebook? |

28 Dec 19 - 10:20 AM (#4025208) Subject: RE: BS: facebook and posts from dead performers From: Stilly River Sage Short history at Mudcat - starting around 2009 there was a Troll making life miserable for Mudcat members. People could sign up without a gatekeeper and he set up literally hundreds of sleeper accounts that he would activate when one of his others was deleted. Accounts would have almost the same name as a regular member and would talk trash, would promote the BNP, UKIP, EDL, etc. and for a while those were forbidden topics because of the Troll. Then as members joined Facebook he started creating fake accounts in their names by harvesting their own Facebook information and putting those fake accounts out there to make mischief. They usually involved photos of buxom young women, sometimes porn, and always the ultra-xenophobic demeanor he'd used before. Over time and enough reporting at Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and various now-long-dead social sites (thank god Opera died anyway, but this was a huge reason why it should never have existed) he moved onto different targets (is my guess). The worst of it was gone by about 2013, I'd say 2011 and 2012 were the worst years for wasting time shutting down his stalker spam accounts. But occasionally he comes back and posts as a guest in other people's names and it's always the racist stuff or it's sick sexually and it's deleted pretty quickly because his writing style is recognizable. Newcomers may wonder that we made such a fuss, but he pulled some nasty tricks, setting up accounts and linking them into associations that the victims were active with, trying to get people fired. People finally started getting smart and not posting publicly on Facebook, choosing instead to post to Friends, or at the most, Friends of Friends, and they shielded their personal photos and photos of themselves, so they couldn't be harvested and added to the fake accounts. For those trying to put a stop to his activities there were a lot of smarmy rabbit-holes to travel down as linked accounts and image searches revealed the sleeper accounts waiting to be activated. To those who suffered through those days, I'm sorry to even describe it here. I'm sure it is causing elevated blood pressure for a few readers. Facebook is a tool that is easily weaponized, as are most of the other social media sites out there, and they're undermanned when it comes to humans who will take a look at a case and resolve it. So you have to be smart about how you use it and keep your privacy settings in mind all of the time. |
