Anyone have any knowledge and information about a song called, I think, "Spanish Cavelier"?

I remember bits and pieces of one my dear old Mom sang to

put me to sleep:

A Spanish Cavalier stood in his retreat,

and on his guitar he played a tune , dear.

The music so sweet would oftimes repeat

The mem'ry of my country and you , dear ....

Sorry, but that's all I remember.. Hope it helps !!!

Some more. My Dad sang it to me.

Oh, say, darling , say/ When I am far away/ Sometimes you may think of me, dear/ Soft summer days will soon fade away/ Remember what I say and be true, dear.

There's more and I've seen it in print somewhere but not for years and I don't remember where. If I can find it I'll write it out.

Found it!

A SPANISH CAVALIER

A Spanish cavalier stood in his retreat,
And on his guitar played a tune, dear;
The music so sweet, would oft-times repeat
The blessing of my country and you, dear.

CHORUS: Oh, say, darling, say, when I am far away,
Sometimes you may think of me, dear;
Bright sunny days will soon fade away.
Remember what I say and be true, dear.

I'm off to the war; to the war I must go
To fight for my country and you, dear;
But if I should fall, in vain would I call
The blessing of my country and you, dear.

And when the war is o'er, to you I'll return
Again to my country and you, dear;
But if I be slain, you may seek me in vain;
Upon the battlefield you will find me.

Sorry I can't help you with the chords. I'm strictly a word person. But the book I got the words from has music, probably for piano, and I could send you a photocopy of the page if it would help.

You can see the sheet music of THE SPANISH CAVALIER at The Library of Congress American Memory Collection. The lyrics are nearly the same as those mim posted above. It was written by William D. Hendrickson and published in 1881.

This is a song from 1881. My grandmother learned it when she was a child living in Arizona during the war. It was such an easy tune to sing. Whenever she told us stories about the war and how they were imprisoned the song usually followed.

Your post raises a whole lot of interesting questions, VictoriaM--it leads me to think that your grandmother spent time in one of the two internment camps/relocation centers in Arizona, and if that's true, her stories are not just family stories, their are chapters of history.

You can hear a recording by Brislin, Stecher & Senauke on the excellent collection The Young Fogies, Vol. II (track 8).

The song is referenced on page 245 of the paperback edition of Jack Finney's time travel novel "Time and Again" as "The Spanish Cavalier". The setting was 1882; so, according to the posting by Victoria Guest, it would have been a fairly new song then.

I learned it in my elementary school music class (4th grade, I think)in the mid-fifties. When I read Finney's book last month, I stopped cold at the reference, closed the book, and immediately sang two verses and the chorus --- after an over fifty-year gap between music class and now!

I heard this song in 1964 from my father back in Taiwan, Republic of China. My older brother broke his arm and had to stay for a week in the hospital that year. A family friend had to stay in the hospital with my brother and help him. They sang this song together to pass time during his hospital stay.

There is a version of this song by Riley Puckett on YouTube. This is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdNgbbaYSGo.

My dad has memories of singing this song with the entire school assembly in the 1940s in upstate NY. What nostalgic memories for him.

My grandmother had a 78 recording of this song when I was very young - back in the 1950's. She told me it had been one of my grandfather's favorite songs (he died when I was 2 or 3 yrs. old). I tried to memorize it back then but cannot remember most of it. I do remember a verse that I haven't seen anywhere else:

The Spanish cavalier was bringing up the rear
And on his guitar played a tune, dear;
The music was sweet and oft did repeat,
The story of his love just for you, dear.

Has anyone else seen this verse?

That's just a minor variation of the first verse.

When young, in family play-parties, or group singing, in Oklahoma and California, we sang the common rounds; also two songs simultaneously, somewhat like a round; The Spanish Cavalier and Solomon Levi. It sounded well, and was great fun.

Ah yes! That's how I learned it, in Jamaica taught by Irish nuns. Sung simultaneously with Solomon Levi:

    My name is Solomon Levi and my store's on Salem Street
    That's where to buy the coats and vests and everything else that's neat.
    Second-handed ulsterettes and overcoats so fine
    And all the boys that trade with me are a hundred and forty-nine.
    Oh Solomon Levi tra la la la la la la!
    Oh Solomon Levi tra la la la la la la la la la!
