The lyrics are nearly the same as those mim posted above. It was written by William D. Hendrickson and published in 1881. |

My grandmother learned it when she was a child living in Arizona during the war. It was such an easy tune to sing. Whenever she told us stories about the war and how they were imprisoned the song usually followed. |

The song is referenced on page 245 of the paperback edition of Jack Finney's time travel novel "Time and Again" as "The Spanish Cavalier". The setting was 1882; so, according to the posting by Victoria Guest, it would have been a fairly new song then. I learned it in my elementary school music class (4th grade, I think)in the mid-fifties. When I read Finney's book last month, I stopped cold at the reference, closed the book, and immediately sang two verses and the chorus --- after an over fifty-year gap between music class and now! |

My older brother broke his arm and had to stay for a week in the hospital that year. A family friend had to stay in the hospital with my brother and help him. She told me it had been one of my grandfather's favorite songs (he died when I was 2 or 3 yrs. old). I tried to memorize it back then but cannot remember most of it. I do remember a verse that I haven't seen anywhere else: The Spanish cavalier was bringing up the rear And on his guitar played a tune, dear; The music was sweet and oft did repeat, The story of his love just for you, dear.
