08 Jan 20 - 07:51 AM (#4026980) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: Senoufou That's interesting keberoxu. I realise that rats bring disease and eat our stored food etc. But I've always quite liked their little cheeky ways and resourcefulness, and in your link it says the Chinese feel that way about them too! While I'm terrified of spiders, I think rodents, especially mice and rats, are sweet little things. I can't understand daft people who jump onto a table when one enters the house (my mother did this, much to my amusement) Hope the Yang Metal Rat brings us all good fortune in 2020. God knows we're going to need it, as Australia burns and Trump starts WW3 !! |

08 Jan 20 - 08:22 AM (#4026989) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: Mr Red The biggest rat in north america is the beaver who is an architect and landscaper. Pardon me for being British and not really understanding all the nuances but: I can think of a bigger rat, a damn (pun intended) nuisance. The great ginger comb-over. |

08 Jan 20 - 08:34 AM (#4026992) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: Dave the Gnome Hey! It coincides with celebrating Robbie Burns this year. Means we can have a Chinese Burns night :-) |

09 Jan 20 - 09:59 AM (#4027277) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: Mrrzy I have a great memory of our dachshunds shaking a mouse out of the curtains and dad, in plain sight of ministers and architects and other important diplomatic guests, *leaping* up onto the coffee table, and immediately back down again and pretending that he hadn't. Everybody adult pretended to have seen. I must have been around 6. Could not understand why only I was dying laughing... |

Husband is apparently a PIG!!! hee hee With regard to the same date for Burns night and the Chinese New Year, can one eat a mutton pie with chopsticks? Or enjoy haggis chow mein? Perhaps I could design myself a tartan cheongsam? |
|
09 Jan 20 - 02:20 PM (#4027353) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: keberoxu Ah, robomatic, my childhood memories are irrationally selective. Why would I block any recall of memories of metal moon munching mice? After all, I proudly watched those Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons on Saturday television. And yet, it is as if I had never ever watched them, as I have no recollection of mental moon munching mice ... I must be deficient ... |

10 Jan 20 - 04:32 PM (#4027558) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: robomatic In my first high class engineering job, we had a real gonzo chief engineer. He was smart, quick, good natured, and went home everyday during lunch to watch Rocky reruns. But my memory of metal munching moon mice goes back all the way to that wonderful show, Fractured Fairy Tales, Boris and Natasha and Mr. Big, Wassamatta U. Lower Slobbovia, Dudley Do-right and Nell, etcetera etcetera, the mind wanders...what were we talking about? |

Selon les Chinois, comme oxen nous sommes honnetes, stables, traditionels et nous perseverons! (C'est a dire tetus!) Mon époux était étonné d'entendre qu'il est porc!! Et pour un musulman c'est un peu difficile! I wouldn't mind at all being a rat. After the excesses of Crimbo though, I look more like a blooming elephant... |

25 Jan 20 - 12:19 PM (#4030138) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: keberoxu hey, I don't care what color the dragons are. As long as they have a spectacular head, lots of pairs of human legs and feet, and do a funny dance. |

It was more of an antimetalic racism plot than a radioactive theme. (or maybe anti Chinese technology?) Even Mystery Science 3000 would reject the movie. |

27 Jan 20 - 07:06 PM (#4030640) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: keberoxu The USPS is selling first-class stamps with the Chinese New Year on them. Didn't buy any, but I had to collect a delivery at my post office, and the Year of the Rat stamps were on display behind glass. They are pleasing. Head, no tail; frontal face with little round ears; the rat's head is blue, and it wears a shiny little crown between its ears. |

28 Jan 20 - 05:05 PM (#4030860) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: WalkaboutsVerse Just caught up with the first 2 episodes of Michael Portillo's Great Asian Railway Journeys on BBC2; they were both in Hong Kong visiting, in summer, some of the same places I photographed for the above-linked poem last December. And others - a walled village in the New Territories looked great. Pleased that he also detailed the truth about the disgusting opium-led British imperialism. Next to my budget hotel in Wan Chai (rather than the pricey Peninsular Hotel MP and the BBC stayed at), was a small shop selling jade with tiny representations of all the zodiac animals, form which I chose a dragon rather than a rat. |

08 Feb 20 - 09:48 AM (#4032952) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: keberoxu This New Year stuff can make February confusing. The Chinese New Year is said to have begun on Robert Burns Day, which was January. But then there is the Lunar New Year which is a bit later. So the celebrations have stretched out for a couple of weeks now. |

10 Feb 20 - 08:44 AM (#4033355) Subject: RE: BS: Chinese New Year of Yang Metal Rat From: Senoufou That's quite true mg. My husband was only saying this the other day, that Chinese investment in West Africa is everywhere, and this epidemic could have an effect. I read this morning that there is a mysterious outbreak of some weird illness in Nigeria. Could it be the Coronavirus but it hasn't been correctly diagnosed? |
