Lyr Req: Drink Down the Moon (from Steeleye Span)

Subject: The Original Request
From: gwynbran@vaix.net

I'm trying to find the lyrics for the version of "Drink Down the Moon" that Steeleye Span did on _Now We Are Six_. I received the _Original Masters_ collection for Christmas and I really like that song but haven't been able to find the lyrics anywhere. As a bonus request, the version Steeleye does of "The Wife of Ushers Well" (from a live recording) is different from the lyrics listed in the Tradition database. Does anyone have that version of those lyrics?

Thanks

Branwyn

Is this the one you mean?

Here's a health to the bird in the bush
Here's a health to the bird in the bush.
For all birds of one feather
They should all flock together,
Let the people say little or much.

And here's a health to the jolly dragoon,
Here's a health to the jolly dragoon.
For we've tarried here all day,
To drink down the day,
Let us tarry now to drink down the moon.

From the Music of Sharpe, John Tams, Dominic Muldowney.

Liz, thats exactly the one I was going to write about. I love John Tams version of Over The Hills and Far Away, but when I got the CD sent over from UK by my mum I hated the version on it; because it wasn't done with traditional instruments. ie Fiddle and Tin whistle. But what a great job John did with The Bird in The Bush...Yours, Aye. Dave

Steeleye Span wove together two traditional suggestive songs to make "Drink Down The Moon" - THE BIRD IN THE BUSH and CUCKOO'S NEST. It's always been one of my favorites of theirs!

Yes they did, but I don't have much of their stuff, so can't help with lyrics, I'm afraid.....

So here's an idea for another thread, which two songs/tunes with suggestive titles could be put together?

A clean one to start with could be Drowsy Maggie/Maggie in the wood.... presumably asleep under a tree somewhere...

Well, you would have found it to be of more interest if the lyrics were still there. I just had a look and discovered that virtually none of the lyrics remain! What a shame. However there are some interesting notes there about some of the songs with regard to the derivation or history of some of the lyrics. But they are difficult to find due to the many dead ends. Sorry about that.
