Until: 2) messenger app was insistent on being installed. 3) notifications clutter at all times, until removed 4) uninstalled messenger, message notifications still appear 5) Fakebook not in a hidden tab in Firefox, notifications still appear 6) nothing in Firefox or Android as AddOns or installations refer to Fakeboook or messenger 7) web search hasn't revealed solutions to this specific scenario, and offered answers do not fit the problem. 8) I can block notifications from individual conversations, but I don't use or want to use Fakebook on Android, so any that I start on a PC will presumably invoke Android notifications as the recipient responds. Until blocked on Android! Any ideas? The only saving grace is that the phone in question has no SIM, but being large screen is useful at times on WiFi. I mainly use it as an OSGR indicator and my local .htm files with loadsa JavaScript can use the OSGR to indicate nearby Bench Marks. IME anything Fakebook does, is engineered to lock you in, or nag you sensless. THEY AIN'T GONNA WIN THIS ONE. |

I have one friend who managed to do that (and whom I never hear from any more). Get "Facebook Purity" or "Fluffbuster Purity" in the FB domain and start constraining everything Facebook tries to do that Facebook won't let you constrain yourself. (Search for "Fluffbuster Purity" because Facebook won't let anyone discuss Facebook Purity - those posts disappear) and don't search in your regular browser window because there are fake FBP apps out there. Bummer. I have it installed in both Chrome and Firefox, and you need to set it up individually in each browser. Three. Learn to use the Facebook settings and go in and check them regularly. You should be able to turn off notifications if you go into the various setting panels and start looking to see what they do. |

Because I too have 'just joined' the blooming thing, having sworn blind I never would. The reason is I'm trying to trace a cousin of mine, and his profile on there is evidently him. So I joined (no photo or personal details though) and left him a message. My husband is on there and there are literally hundreds of pics of him in various sporty clothes! If I get no reply after a day or two, like you I'll close it down. The funny thing is that this cousin and I have never met, but he's in the BNP (!!!), is horribly racist and covered in extreme tattoos about Newcastle United Football Club. I'm tempted to post a pic of my (very) black husband! That should shock him rigid tee hee. |

Notifications off for everything but things I want to be notified about. I take no notice of trolling and flamebait. Pretty much like on here. From: DaveRo According to this (may be paywalled: Even if you remove the mobile Messenger app (and do not delete your Facebook account), your Facebook friends can still send you messages when you are logged into the desktop version of the site.So sign out. Or does that not work? I don't use FB, so I've not seen their notifications, but you should be able to turn them off. I'm not sure if that applies to Android, but I think so. Or use another browser for FB. You could try the new beta Firefox browser which is in the store as 'Firefox preview'. (It'll replace the current one eventually, but it doesn't do addons, yet.) Failing all that I'd resort to script blocking. |

So I uninstalled "Messenger Notifications" - but there was still a "Messenger Lite" without an uninstall option. ************* The warning here must be, if Fakebook wants you to install the "Messenger" app on Android, it will install more than one app. I never "like" posts - if I have an opinion it is usually a joke and thence a reply. AI has difficulty categorising humour. As evident from the Ads it sends. Which disappeared for a long time because I always delete them as "Irrelevant". The old adage that Fakebook keeps people in touch is the reason I have an account. My family are in Canada & NZ - and they use Fakebook rather than e-mail - so I have to. Plus sessions and Folk Clubs often have an account, which is a conduit to check on data for mister.red |

Luckily I haven't given any details for my 'profile' (is that the word?) but the site keeps telling me to take a picture with my webcam (eh? Is that a camera fixed to one's computer? It would catch me eating crumpets if so!) Half of Africa 'follows' my husband, and I do wonder if he's being wise about security. It tells where he works, what area he lives in, and so on. And he posts so many photos of himself posing around Norfolk/Norwich in various get-ups, which all his mates and family in Ivory Coast comment upon. I can't see the point myself. "This is me in my T-shirt and loose trousers." "This is me in another T-shirt and some more trousers" "This is me sitting on the sofa eating yet another crumpet" etc etc etc. What would people want to look at all that for? Yawn... |

I preferred the site that closed not so long ago "Friends United". It did not get in your face near as much as farcebook. But having said that, Facebook does make it easy to have instant worldwide contact with friends, former colleagues and relatives. |

It wants it, to build a profile. Mine makes me 40 years old, so adverts are geared to things I would not be interested in. But seriously, your exact birthdate is mandatory on some websites like banking and health. Why give the miscreant a sure-fire vector that with other stupidities like answering shared posts about your first pet's name etc, they can triangulate on banking or credit card details. They only have to win once in 1000 to make it pay, which might be over the phone. As long as it is not you! |

Honestly, some of the photos people post are not in the least interesting. Even my sister, just her standing in front of some mountain, or in some glen, or by some loch or other.
