You have the wrong day. And there's nothing to be happy about. Last Valentine's day I was done for speeding on the A30 near Bodmin. Valentine's Day is like Halloween and all those other stupid days, there for capitalist sharks to make money from you. Wait until the16th and Prosecco will be down to five quid a bottle, mark my words.

Ooooh Steve, you miserable old curmudgeon you! We don't go in for elaborate gifts or expensive Valentine dinners in posh restaurants (I agree it gets far too commercialised), but we always get each other a pretty card and write loving words inside (in French of course - good way to keep my language skills sharp)
At school we used to send/receive mysterious Valentine's cards to those we rather fancied! I hated Jean Springett, the most attractive lass in the class. She always got a pile of cards from her secret admirers. Maddening!
I second keberoxu's good wishes.
Happy Valentine's Day everyone, whenever and however you celebrate it.

I've never given a monkeys about Valentine's Day..

Until this song captured my grumpy militant cynical old heart..

Language of Love

Usually, when internet playlists throw up such vapid romantic dross
I delete them within seconds..
But for some unknown reason I continued watching the video beyond the first few bars of music,
and how glad I am I did..

Happy Valentine's Day all chumps in love...

i always assumed the heart shape is a graphic representation of female genitals with that little arrow as a penis. Happy genitals day?

I was wrong. You can get Prosecco Spumante TODAY for a fiver at both Lidl and Sainsbury's. Weekend here I come. The card and flower shops can go to hell.

I ordered more heating oil from Boilerjuice, and got an online voucher for £40 to buy wine. When I investigated, you have to buy £100 worth, then you get the £40 off! Blooming scam.
(We don't drink anyway, but I thought our lovely neighbours might have liked a few bottles of plonk as a gift.)

Happy Valentine's day to you, too, keb and Senoufou.

A few days ago we played for English country dance, and for the final couples' waltz we did "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."

When I learned this as a kid, I learned:

"Keep the lovelight glowing in your eyes so blue..."

but when I checked the original, it said "eyes so true." When I told my bandmates, most of whom have brown eyes, they were all for it.

The DH and I will certainly observe Valentine's Day. We observe anything that involves chocolate.

For me, Valentine's Day will always be the anniversary of the day my wonderful dog showed up on my doorstep as an abandoned puppy. We even named her "Valentina" ("Tina" for short) in honor of the day.

Other than that, I think the day is just an excuse to sell candy and flowers.

Why can't misanthropes get a special celebration day every year,
when we get cards and gifts off all the people we don't like...???

Alluding to divorce, in the film Stan said to Ollie "I'm going to marry a woman I don't like and buy her a house."

[based on recollection, not necessarily verbatim, Nige]

I found that my memory wasn't as good as I thought it was. Here's the actual quote, which works a damn sight better than my version:

“I'm never getting married again. I'm just going to find a woman I don't like and buy her a house.”

Still, half-remembered stuff isn't always bad. But for that we wouldn't have "Down By The Salley Gardens."

Husband got home from work at 9.15pm and presented me with a huge papaya fruit, which he'd hidden in one of our kitchen cupboards! He prepared it for me, and served it on my favourite bone china plate as a 'Valentine's surprise'. It was delicious.
