I remember the night Sr. died, I was laying in bed with a crystal set radio when the news came over the wire. As a teenager, he was my idle, I cried. I will never forget that night. Not to long ago I went to a JR. Concert, yes me and 2,00 young gas station attendants. The best part of the concert was when he came to the front of the stage all be himself, sat on a stool and did several of his fathers songs. JR has had to find his own way, and that was not easy for him. I keep Hank SR CD's and JR CD's right along side my Jerry Garcia CD's. |

"Could Have Been Me" "Some Gave All" "The Heart Of A Woman" and "Words By Heart" are some of the best country songs ever written, and are especiallt enjoyed by my sister and I. Around here, most folks are old-timers who wish country music was Ernest Tubb and Lefty Frizzell again. They don't leave room for some of us youngster who grew up with 80's and 90's country, and like it. Though I have fallen out with country music lately--it's all pretty much stupid--the last good year was '95 and the best was '92. You need to find the roots because that's what holds the tree. smoke a joint or drink a beer and lay down some Hank Williams Sr., or Monroe Brothers, Or Lilly Brothers, or Carter family,or Dock boggs. You can even get up into Norman blake or Dock Watson, or some of these others today who know their roots and what the music is. Sorry if I come off as mean but it's the honest truth. |

I think that the reason a lot of people hate it so much (apart from the fact that it sucks), is that the term "Country" is used to describe it. Although I also hate rap music, it doesn't claim to be a replacement of a music that I love; it is something new.
...or maybe new country just sucks.

As for modern country music--y'know I don't give a dingo's kidney about images and lights and concerts--I like music! The way someone chooses the arrange or sing or perform their music isn't going to sway me. Around here it's like--"modern 'popular' music isn't like the traditional stuff--so let's hate it." I don't really care. If it's good music, I'm going to like it. I enjoy the British band Radiohead, who are extremely avante-garde alternative rock. But they create beautiful music, and just because they aren't Bill Haley and the Comets is no reason not to like them. I also like bands like Shooglenifty, Burach, AfroCelt Sound System, Ashley MacIssac, and Paul Mounsey. They are progressive music, and lots of people hate them too. But like I said, I'm a music lover and therefor love music across a wide spectrum. Some people who like certain kinds of music are expected to hate others, classic duels like rock vs country, country vs classical, rock vs classical, folk vs rock, etc. but I like them ALL! Understanding is all I ask for. Sometimes I think it's easier for young people to enjoy music of the present, and to look back and enjoy music of the past. It seems harder for people who liked their modern music, and dislike anything that came after. I think if I add the old to the new, and the new to the old, I can create music for my future. I don't want to stay in one time period and play nothing but that music, never evolving, and disliking those who do evolve. I'm sure all the people who first originated those old traditional songs and tunes would probably hate you for ruining THEIR music too. He's not the man his Daddy was, but then who is? I am also a fan of older country (Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Hank Snow,Patsy Cline, Louvin Bros, Earl Monroe), but there are a lot of newer artists I admire, including Steve Earl and Dwight Yoakam. I also am a fan of the many artists who modified Country music (for better or worse) into the New Country it has become- Gram Parsons and Emmy Lou Harris, the Clarence White-era Byrds, The Flying Burritos, Poco, etc.Unfortunately, most of the grit of early country has been polished out by the Big Nashville Producers and record labels. But anyway, I believe Hank was the greatest Tunesmith of them all, with Haggard just a skosh behind him. LEJ |

When we were in Okinawa, we'd listen to it at least twice a week, along with Aaron Tippin's "Call of The Wild." Ahhh...back in the good old early 90's, when country music was still good...I miss Doug Stone! BTW Marty's album "Tempted" is also a very good album. My current favorite country artist is Blackhawk, who simply have the best harmony in country today, and some darn good songs, too. I probably have fewer than a hundred CDs, a few dozen of which I play over and over, and make tapes of for the car. My wife has maybe an equal number of classics, with which she does the same. We have a couple hundred or so vinyl lps that I get to only when I want to tape something or look up a song. I'll admit that there are hundreds more CDs that I would like to own, but how much play time would they get? I've got Corky Siegal's "Chamber Blues" on my CD, Art Thieme's "Lies" in the tape deck, Rick Fielding's latest CD in my clock radio--it's been this way for a couple of weeks. Maybe next week I'll put Dwight Diller back in someplace, I have a Sonny and Brownie CD I haven't listened to yet (and a few of their lps untouched for years). When I was in the College of Agriculture U-Conn It was quite the Joke to send a Tomb Stone Collect to some one you did not like. Actually they did have 100 Baby chicks for $4:98 plus postage. WE sent them to our house mother. What was interestering was the advert. For the chicks It was stated that they were all tested for Polurium Sp.? that was a disease which could infect an entire flock. I remember our poultry Prof. telling us that they were tested, BUT it did not say if they were infected or not. Ah deception in advertising. Nothing like The Golden Rocket, Hawkinshaw Hawkins, String Bean. Etc. THere all up there playng in the heavenly band Just remember "OLD WAYS ARE BEST" |

Leonard Cohen said Hank Wms was a hundred floors above him in the Tower of Song. Or was it a thousand? There's a movie called "The Night Hank Williams Died." Forget who's in it--could be an actor named Snuffy something or other. Saw it years ago and did a bit of research, and the actor used to do the play of the same name as a touring show. Sounded like he was channeling Hank Wms in the movie, so I imagine it was a spooky experience in a playhouse. Drunk, maudlin & inspired. May be the best musical biopic type movie I ever saw. |

I liked the part where he was a bit along on his bottle and forgot where he was, and when it came time to go back onstage they found him swapping guitar licks with the janitor. He was belligerent going back on, then he broke down, mewled a while, sang a gut-wrencher and the audience forgave everything. They knew he was on his last legs. Sneezy Waters. I swear that's one of the best film performances I've ever seen. |
