There seems to be a lot of interest in folk radio programmes so, if I can, I'd like to share some of the live stuff I taped back in the late 70's/80's.

This is one attempt at making a CD of songs from these programmes. The sound quality is not that great (given my primitive equipment of the time) but still quite listenable and my attempts at editing can best be described as "abrupt".

Allan, if you still have a cassette deck this is a fairly easy process. I would be interested in hearing them if you get them converted

Buy an RCA to 3mm MP3 jack (like this)

Plug the RCA end in to the OUT port of your tape deck and plug the 3mm jack into your laptop audio IN port. If you have only a desktop this is a little harder but they make some fairly long cables.

Download Audacity - a free recording software here

Make sure you've got the jack plugged in to your computer and your tape deck on. Open Audacity and next to the symbol of the speaker find the choice "Line In." It may take some searching to find it but it should** be there

Click the red "record" circle and hit play on your tape deck. Make sure the blue colored waves in the audio track section appear to mimic the highs and lows of the song.

Once you're done, hit the black square (end) and hit "File" and "export" and then select your preferred audio type. If you want to split them into individual songs you can use your mouse to click and drag to highlight a specific song and export one song at a time in the same manner except you chose "export" --> "export selected audio."


** Newer laptops seem to be continuously phasing out the "Line In" audio option. There's unfortunately not really a way to know without trying or not. If Line In can't be found on your computer you can buy something like this for ~$30

What I mean to say is, having downloaded them to MY computer (which I can do) how do I then forward them to somebody who wants them?

That's fairly easy. Create a YouTube account and find a video editing software you like. If you have a Windows computer, press windows key and type "video editor" and it should come up. Find a picture you think matches the songs, and save the video as a video format YouTube accepts (3GPP, AVI, FLV, MOV, MPEG4, MPEGPS, WebM and WMV)

Then just share the link with those interested. You can mess around with the settings to make them "unlisted" if you are afraid of copyright regulations, etc - there are plenty of well-made videos on YouTube that can explain how to do that.

Or if you don't want to I'm sure I or other people here would be willing to upload them if you furnish us with an email to contact you with.

You could but I’m not sure I necessarily would. You could join mudcat (it doesn’t hurt or have any downsides I know of) by clicking membership at the top. You could then share things more privately with any other member without exposing your email to the world.

Or you could. Up to you. If you have a yahoo account or similar you can create disposable email addresses.

If you are looking to set up somewhere to upload your files to it would be easy to show how.

The initial post also contained this sentence: "This is one attempt at making a CD of songs from these programmes". Any such CD would require copyrights identified & the appropriate permissions sought. CD-Rs are not exempt.

As guest said, I just wanted to share the music so that it doesn't disappear when I do! - sort of like saying "come round to my place and listen to this old music I've got" Using the term CD was just my old fashioned way of listing the songs.

Anyway, there doesn't seem to be much interest so I think we'll just leave it at that.

Fair use does not cover UK. These are UK copyright recordings. The complications are quite complex when it comes to special radio versions or commercial recordings and the dates of recording or publication. Copyright for after 1962 music recordings is 70 years after publication. Copyright in songs is 70 years after the death of the writers.   A bit of leeway for the scale of breaching copyright is understandable given that this is just someone doing a fan thing. However if any commercial use is to be made, then that is something that should clearly not be done, nor should this site be encouraging bootlegging/pirating and Mudcat being used as a meeting ground for the distributing of pirated material. The tone of this whole post has been unsavory and there should have been a moderating force to caveat the whole subject, as clearly there is going to be copyright breaching involved, not personal use.

That's not what my point is. Its if it goes from minor exchanges to commercial bootlegging/pirating. I posted a video on 'Youtube' for a musical friend of a 'lost TOTP' wiped performance, preserved by an early 1970's video recorder owner. This was being circulated on an obscure DVD. Technically I am breaching the BBC's copyright, but its not of normal broadcasting quality. For the purpose of fans, I am undermining the commercial bootleggers, and also the artist themselves wanted it put up - so she could share her historic lost performance on Facebook and her website, even though its only available in Black and White. She wrote the song and it is monetized by her publishers. I have not monetized it, as I have no right to. Home tapers have supplied many lost programmes and songs back to the artists and broadcasters - and are to be commended for that. It's not that, but how they are publicly exchanged and whether commercial use is intended. That's all, it just needed to be stated that if you plan releasing it on CD, it's not as simple as saying I recorded it, I own it.

They are unrepresentative of the majority of music lovers,
who do keep altruistic free sharing of rare out of commercial circulation music

True I admit that one. there is 'Fair Dealing' use in a different context, but in this context, 'enthusiasts' publicly exchanging recorded modern copyright music is not 'fair'.   nor would it hold sway if you start exchanging links and bootlegging - which was the implication. Weasels try and use it in advance of breaching copyright, but It can usually be dismissed.

You are also missing the point that the BBC rarely keeps folk programmes. Almost all are junked after airing. We personally have recordings of Country Meets Folk, Folk Song Cellar, Folkweave, My Kind Of Folk, Folk 75 / 76 / 77 /78 / 79 ..., etc., etc. All junked by the Beeb but many taped by home enthusiasts.

Sadly with the attitudes of some on this thread with their 'white horse' comments these will deter those holding such collections to allow others to enjoy their recordings.

The parallel of course is Dr. Who and Dad's Army. Wiped by the BBC but rescued by home recordists albeit in inferior quality.

Then there is Brit. comedy with still missing eps. of The Clitheroe Kid, Navy Lark, Men from the Ministry, etc., etc. And Parsely Sidings was totally lost until home-taped copies were discovered by an overseas recordist. Many now 'lost' eps. recorded by fans are turning up all of the time ultimately to be offered back to the Beeb, which only accepts a few these likely to be restored by such as Keith Wickham (who restores home-taped recordings for BBC R4X).

But the issue with folk is that the Beeb doesn't want any recordings returned for its archives - period. We have tried to return the hundreds of recordings that we have. But the Beeb is simply not interested in the programmes (mentioned above and more). Many are good quality recordings off FM too. Indeed the Beeb is so disinterested in folk that we have stopped offering them anything, even rarites.

So good for Allen above in trying to preserve and share his recordings. He is not infringing the monetary value of his recordings because as he says they are not high quality. However he is offering the chance for others to hear likely long gone and forgotten singers or musicians. Now he is put off.

BTW our strategy is to offer recordings to the artistes (if they are still around) but many don't want to hear themselves from year's back.

As an aside their is a good archive of Carthy material on YouTube - some recordings from our collections.

The argument being that videotape was expensive (at the time) was used by the BBC to wipe most of the Jazz 625 concerts, famously the Albert Ayler band’s inflammatory session at the LSE, the only gig they played in the U.K. Compered by Humphrey Lyttelton, whose familiarly sardonic comments about the gig in one of his books didn’t mention the more abrasive/incomprehending ones he made in private, allegedly. Still, Lyttelton had made the journey from music hall trad to ‘mainstream’ not so long before and ironically a lot of the nastier comments about Ayler’s black revolutionary music, steeped in the church, blues and earlier forms, came from the modern jazz establishment present. Ronnie Scott et al. Dirty beboppers indeed... (A gag for the elderly). So folk was not the only music to suffer eradications. Defending the Banal Broadcasting Company is an odd pose for me but I suspect that the arguments they used re expense were probably accurate, within the terms of their remit, rather than displaying a vendetta against folk and other creative musics. Pissed me off that they wiped stuff I really liked and would love to have a record of, but I don’t think it was a conscious decision so much as incomprehension and cost etc. Ditto folk. Petty, yes, and ironic, given the bloated organisation it was and is...
