BS: Coviciousness

News items I've seen today:

6 ambulances in Ramsgate, Kent, get holes drilled in their tyres by vandals.

Police in Yorkshire get spat at en masse by a mob of dozens of motorcyclists.

A bunch of teenagers in a village two miles from me hurl stones at a bus (now only carrying essential workers) and smash its windows.

A landlady in Edinburgh and a landlord in London summarily evict tenants because they're frontline NHS workers.

NHS staff get physically attacked for doing their job and anybody looking Oriental in public risks getting ukipped in the face.

Stories like the OP will emerge, sadly many much as reported, though Fakebook will promulgate its usual crop of scurrilous crap that becomes de facto believed.

These are difficult times, there will be desperate people and the scum of society will find ways of using it for more than just surviving.

The old &/or confused will be targeted. There are plenty of random acts of kindness around, sadly also cover for the miscreants.

We should be looking out for each other............

Don't think it's as easy as that in a society where 'entitlements' a few and often are a matter of survival to those who need them
There are the mindless few who abuse them but most people are contented to take what they need

One of our neighbours has a daughter who is a veterinary nurse and a shepherdess.
She keeps her flock of sheep in another village not too near ours.
Saturday night a group of lads got horribly drunk in that village and at midnight were creating mayhem around the place. No-one called the Police unfortunately. On Sunday morning she went to check on the flock and found one ewe lying dead with her head bashed in, and a yearling lamb with a ripped foot and a hole in his head.
She called the Police but they weren't interested.
The yearling is called Merlin, and the vet treated him. I think the hole in its head was due to a crossbow bolt, and the ripped foot was from trying to escape in a panic.
She has Merlin at home on a lead, and brought him to see us. Dear little chap.
I sat and cried. How utterly disgusting - I just can't put it out of my mind.

Madrid: Ice rinks have clverly been turnd into morgues.

Th case against old people:
On a coldly economic level, one might still ask: so what? Let’s take the U.K. as an example, since they are the most prominent proponents of the “herd immunity” strategy. Say that nothing is done to halt the spread and attempts to isolate vulnerable populations like the elderly fail. The over-70 crowd is literally decimated by the virus: One in ten of the infected die. Say that for adults under 70, by contrast, the death rate is half a percent. By the time 60 percent of the population is infected, that would mean approximately 600,000 deaths across the U.K. That sounds awful — but given the concentration of casualties among the elderly, the excess death rate would surely be lower, as over 450,000 Britons over the age of 70 already die annually, and those most-likely to be felled by the virus are also those most likely to die of other causes. And these are hardly the economy's most productive citizens; the economic impact of them dying earlier might even be positive.
Moreover, if the elderly were simply denied medical intervention for any reason and limited to the simplest forms of palliative care during the duration of the crisis, we could probably keep the medical system from being overwhelmed and provide adequate care for those capable of returning to productive work.
*

I hope nobody would be comfortable making an argument like that explicitly. But it lurks in the background of the all-purpose dismissiveness voiced by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity about the seriousness of the virus (who are following the President’s lead in doing so), or in pieces like this one by Heather Macdonald at the conservative cultural journal The New Criterion. It is implicit more generally in any purely economic read on the crisis. The fact is that only a portion of modern health care is aimed at enhancing productivity; much of it aims at improving and lengthening the lives of those whose most productive years are largely behind them. If you don't have any non-economic reason for valuing those lives — like the value of their presence in the world to children, grandchildren, neighbors, and friends, or simply the inherent dignity of being human — then it is hard to argue for spending scarce resources on them in normal times, much less in times of crisis.

*Death Rate = (number of deaths / number of cases) = probability of dying if infected by the virus (%). This probability differs depending on the age group. The percentages shown below do not have to add up to 100%, as they do NOT represent share of deaths by age group. Rather, it represents, for a person in a given age group, the risk of dying if infected with COVID-19.

80+ years old =14.8%

70-79 years old = 8.0%

60-69 years old = 3.6%

50-59 years old = 1.3%

40-49 years old = 0.4%

30-39 years old = 0.2%

20-29 years old = 0.2%

10-19 years old = 0.2%

0-9 years old no fatalities

These figures are old.(Feb28) They may have changed.

why in an epidemic are there morgues? Except for perhaps very brief periods. Bodies need to be rapidly taken to final disposition, with no persons exposed more than absolutely necessary. I presume final disposition would be cremation, but I read a WHO that suggested mass graves. We must protect the living. There can be video memorials, web sites in their memory etc. but not one person infected due to our laxity or traditions.

Just for accountability, and autopsy. Mind you analysis of death (in the UK) can be by-passed if the doctor thinks the death can be explained. This, in more usual times, would be those dying in hospital. And after the Dr Harold Shipman shock horror things were tightened-up.

Regarding the Trump sentence quoted by leenia, the previous sentence was "I want everyone to go to Easter services I have such a feeling for Easter and then everyone should go back to work the following Monday, we've had flu before and we never shut down the country, we can't make the cure worse than the problem."

The problem is that in two weeks the country will be at an all time peak of infected citizens. I know he is worried about his empty hotels and golf courses but having us triple infections really won't help.

The only reason Trump doesn't like this cure is because six of his seven profitable hotels and casinos were shuttered. He's watching his bottom line most closely and this is the prefect illustration why he should have put it all in a blind trust.

Today's piece of mail was a postcard to tout "President Trump's Coronavirus Guidelines for America." Like he has something to do with it, as he doesn't understand the science and works against the guidelines. All it is for him is free advertising. The Affordable Care Act was called just that until the GOP derisively called it "Obamacare." So Obama grabbed it and turned the pejorative around. Trump, on the other hand, is just trying to get reelected.

One thing we know about viruses is that they mutate. That's why they have to craft a new flu shot every year. The Covid virus could be mutating to be worse for us, or it could be getting better for us. I suppose that some could be going one way, some hundreds of miles away could be going the other.

That might explain why the occurrence of Covid is so patchy.

Another thing I know: I have a friend who works in a huge Midwestern hospital. As of last Sunday, it had seven Covid patients. It had set up a new ICU for Covid patients, and as of Sunday, it was empty.

There are TED.com videos on viruses that explain how deadly viruses can mutate to be relatively benign. If the virus kills its host it can not spread. If herd immunity slows it up, evolution will favour it as benign.

Nice theory, but it takes years. A recent Royal institution YouTub vid showed the progress of Spanish 'flu. It reached its peak before Nov 11 1918. And sorry US, but Kansas was mentioned as ground zero for the epidemic. Most countries called it by the name of another country except Japan where patent zero was a Sumo wrestler so it was called the Sumo 'flu.
See graphs & humour COVID-19, only London is shown for Feb/Mar 1919 (3rd wave).

We crossed over this week: coronavirus is heaping cruelty upon cruelty Black Monday brought waves upon waves of frightening news (record job losses, NRL season over, Olympics won’t go ahead, Queensland to shut borders, 3,000 Australians stranded on cruise ships; pubs, cafe, licensed premises, gyms etc all shut at midday). There were heartbreaking sights: the streets all across the country empty, except for thousands and thousands of people queuing at a mandated social distance for Centrelink. The next day people started lining up at 4:30am.
The virus is invisible – but the economic devastation is a tragedy you could see. Each job loss represents a seismic explosion in an individual’s world. By the end of Monday at least 15% of people I know had lost a substantial portion of their income, or their jobs or businesses they had spent decades building up.
By Monday an estimated 88,000 people lost their jobs in the hospitality industry alone and tried to file for unemployment ... Suddenly jobless in my circle were yoga teachers, barmen, baristas, cafe owners, a university support worker, university cleaner, personal trainers, roadies, two tour managers for bands, freelance journalists, friends in PR and regional journalism, playwrights, coffee cart owners, sound engineers, winery owners, chefs, cinema operators, kitchen hands, film production crew, ushers at theatres, stage hands, driving instructors, those doing contract work for financial services, event organisers, florists and professional MCs ... There is cruelty heaped upon cruelty with this pandemic. The fear is not just the mortal fear of contracting what could be a deadly virus, the fear is losing your job and having no money, the fear is being evicted and made homeless, the fear is foreclosure, the fear is being separated from your family – whether interstate or overseas (or in my case, a town two hours away), the fear is bankruptcy and sacking your staff, the fear is your debt, the fear is for the education and anxiety of your children, the fear is for the health of your elderly parents, the fear is for your immunocompromised friends. It goes on(read on)

NRL = football, Centrelink = our national social security agency which will be starting to pay the newly unemployed at the end of April, not much use to the destitute. Folk can't complete their application on line, they need to call to get a reference no. (call centre can't cope & is getting more staff) & of course their computer system crashed at least once. System has been adjusted so now they don't need a ref no.

Our payment scheme for the newly unemployed is not as generous as schemes in other countries, & tens of thousands of workers aren't covered in any way.

extract from another guardian article - New Zealanders can live and work in Australia indefinitely on the special category visa, which they receive automatically upon arrival. But due to changes in 2001, they are ineligible for nearly all forms of welfare, including sickness allowance and the JobSeeker payment, as well as the National disability insurance scheme.
There are an estimated 650,000 New Zealanders living and working in Australia on this visa, many in casual or hospitality jobs either shut down or under threat due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Those who have lost work and are facing financial hardship due to Covid-19 are ineligible for the JobSeeker allowance, and have found it virtually impossible to return to New Zealand. Even if they did, they would have to quarantine for two weeks and then go into the full lockdown that has been imposed around the country ...
The New Zealand prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, has also raised the issue directly with Australian prime minister Scott Morrison, calling for a “short-term exemption”.
“We are providing care to Australians here, we think it is the right thing to do,” Ardern said on Friday.
