Find the song challenge

"Anonymous early English lyric" from a chapter header:

Fill the cup, Philip
And let us drink a dram.

Nothing in the Trad or the Google, so I turn to y'all.

Any ideas?

I found the poem titled "Fill the Cup, Philip" credited "About 1500" - see Early English Poems, pp. 302-303

FILL UP THE CUP, PHILIP

Fill up the cup, Philip
And let us drink a dram!
Once or twice about the house,
And leave where we began.

I drink to you, sweetheart,
So much as here is in,
Desiring you to follow me,
And do as I begin.

And if you will not pledge,
You shall bear the blame;
I drink to you with all my heart,
If you will pledge me the same.

I also found reference to it here (link) that says it can be found in passing in Chambers and Sidgwick 18:228

Ooh, another book, great!

And thanks for the poem. Is there music, do you know?

I'm not aware of there being music to it but it reads to me to have similar rhythms as The Grand Old Duke of York song, albeit modified slightly. That's just my impression, though; like I said, I couldn't find any music

It was set to music by Peter Warlock in the 20s

You can download a 1921 edition of Chambers and Sidgwick from archive: Early English Lyrics. As noted in reference above, the poem is on p228 (page 244 of the pdf).

This poem reminds me of the time I went to the Scandinavian dance session. For the first dance, somebody started walking, another person followed her, another person followed him, etc etc. (I think one person put hands on the shoulders of the person in front.) So they wound up with a long line of dancers, flowing and curving about the hall.

A dance like that would explain:

"Once or twice about the house,
And leave where we began.
...
Desiring you to follow me,
And do as I begin."

Thanks for posting. This is a fun song.
