Lyr Add: King Salmond

In celebration of Alex Salmond's acquittal on all trumped up charges of rape and sexual assault today, I submit Davie Robertson's nice wee song in his honour.
King Salmond.

I’ve never been able to understand why so many people seem to have an instinctive visceral loathing of Alec Salmond. I’ve always thought of him as one of the good guys.

    KING SALMOND
    (Davie Robertson)
    The tune here is “Do’n chuthaig”.

    Whae is that politician fine Wi principles unwaverin?
    Unlike the rest whae at their best Are like auld wifies haverin.
    Wi judgment sage, on Scotland’s stage He towers like a colossus,
    An tae ma mind ye couldnae find A better man tae boss us!

    In wise debate he cairries weight, A man o generous bulk.
    He shrugs it off when mockers scoff, An critics girn an sulk.
    They sing his praise on Atholl Braes, An kiss his erse in Cramond.
    Oh mark him weel, that man o steel! His name is Alec Salmond.

    Opponents sweir, an jeer, an sneer, Wi slanders vitriolic;
    Their principles disposable, Their policies shambolic.
    Ignore such freaks, but when Eck speaks Ye wuid dae weel tae heed him.
    If ye hae brains, cast off yer chains, An follae him tae freedom!

    Wi cheery grin an treble chin, This bluff an herty bloke
    Oor steps will guide, that we may slide Oot fae Britannia’s yoke.
    When freedom’s gained, throats unrestrained Will cry, “All hail tae Alec!”
    An serried ranks express their thanks In English, Scots, an Gaelic.

    An sae I say, “Roll on the day!” When we oor pride reclaim;
    When we as Scots will call the shots Here in oor native hame.
    And at the helm, tae guide the realm, Oor best beloved leader.
    At oor desire, let Liz retire; King Salmond shall succeed her!

I first met Salmond in the late 70s (shortly before he got temporarily purged from the SNP for trying to take it to the left) and he's always struck me as impressively focused on the task in hand. (Whereas two other nearly as prominent Scottish politicos I've known personally, Tommy Sheridan and George Galloway, both seemed to be as committed to self-glorification as to getting results).

The fit-up of Salmond seemed to me to be more about putting Nicola Sturgeon in an invidious position than about Salmond personally - after all he was hardly an active campaigner any more. Her handling of the affair was superbly thought-out and guaranteed that the spooks and stooges had close to zero impact on the wider Scottish independence movement. Well done, her.

Nicola Sturgeon?   Nay doot ye jest!    The ploy hid Sturgeon's fingerprints aw ower it.
Anyweys...the song, like the rest eh Davie's produce, is a belter.

Disagree Ake - if anything, Nicola's been set up by the British Establishment! She was forced to accept a UK plant as head of civil service (answerable to Westminster, not Holyrood). This woman proceeded to put various cronies in place, then groom SNP members ,(or possibly - women who appeared to be SNP supporters but were in fact able to be persuaded /manipulated into what was probably a scheme to break up SNP and discredit Alec Salmond AND Nicola Sturgeon.) This sort of 'dirty tricks' has been done before, eg police putting 'plants' in protest groups etc.

Guest, I resigned my membership when Sturgeon was made leader and I realised what kind of "Independence" she envisaged. Without Salmond's fire and gut instincts the nationalist movement in Scotland would still be wallowing in the mire. He built it singlehanded and must be appalled to see what the movement has become. The Nats used to be known as "The tartan Tories" in the days when Scotland had an industrial base, now they are just "The tartan snowflakes", more interested in minority rights than developing a strong economically independent nation.
Anyweys this sections meant tae be about music and as Davie is Scotland's greatest workin' class bard I think we should show him some appreciation...Ake

I don't know GUEST up there but I agree with every word.

I brought a thread to the top about an English song which seemed to me to fit the situation - "Come Buggering Oates, Prepare Thy Neck", originally about the most murderous liar of the 17th century. The UK government's stooge Leslie Evans, who organized the fit-up of Salmond, deserves a similar celebration.
