Implications of a feather

Now, I am under the impression that when a person in a ballad wears a hat and feather it means they are part of a military group, but does it mean anything different if the wearer is a woman? The example I'm thinking of is from the song Queen Amangst the Heather by Andy Stewart:

"No shoes nor stockings did she wear Neither hat she kept nor had she feather"

Does anybody know what this means? Or is Andy Stewart on crack? ;-)

Thank you muchly.

Deborah

my reading of the phrase would be "she's really poor, she not only can't afford a hat, she couldn't afford to trim it if she had one"

Dear Deborah,

I think the important question is whether Andy Stewart wore a feather IN his crack, in which the implications would be very different...

Mario is right--I figure it to mean she's doesn't have a hat with something like an ostrich plume in it, that the narrator would have been more used to seeing on women's heads in London & Balquiddar. Besides, the song is traditional, and there aren't really many good words that rhyme with "heather."

Here's a song my dad sings. It needs a string cockney accent.

She wears a little bonnet
with an ostrich feather on it
she's covered all in pearlies and got flansies (flounces) 'round her frock
her line is in the flower way
and since she's been down our way
all the other Donahs down our alley's got the knock.

Since its Scottish it may be from the fact that the clan chiefs Family wear feathers(eagles)in their "bonetts" behind the clan badge so maybe its sying she is not of the Clan but of more menial stock.so feather in their cap meant people of rank and status.

Micca - if I understand the arguments on the SCA newsgroups corectly, ANY clan member is entitled to ONE feather....so no feather would be not a member of the clan...so that interpretation would probably go along with the being poor. I tried to find more lyrics to put this in context and found a clip that included words about wishing she could be clad in satins and silk, so I am more inclined to interprete the qouted line as that the woman was poverty-stricken....but would be interested in seeing all the lyrics if anyone has them.

MMario yes that was what I was getting at, there were always "hangers-on" around the clan but not having the feather status of membership and therfore "below the Salt" menials aspiring to clanship one day.

Interesting Micca....The klan here wears hoods and not feathers and the tartan is white muslin, although I suspect percale is gaining in popularity.

"We wear our robes and a satin sash.
That proves that we're rich white trash."
..........."Friendly Liberal Neighborhood KKK"

Spaw - Micca, I understand we share a name. My apologies!

Hey Spaw, do we? Great, re above tho' isn't it curious that your local Klans use the summoning device of the Scottish Clans for rallying, how a symbol can have its meaning changed. So Have you got a Kilt? and No, Possum is not a good sporran, they go for the nuts.**BG**
