2020 Obit: Ted Crum

Very sad news - the first victim of the virus that I knew personally - died yesterday. Ted Crum (Edward Tudor Crum) A wonderful harmonica and melodeon player - musician for Chynewyrde Morris of Leamington. I first met him with the Somerville Gentleman's Band, then when I was calling for Peeping Tom - with whom he played for a number of years, and later with Steamchicken - he also played for the Jam and Crumpet Band. Really strikes home when it's a personal friend!

That's very sad. I met Ted a couple of times via a mutual friend. I even played the harmonica with him. I've said hello to him here in threads too. He was a lovely chap. Condolences to you, his friends and his family.

Steve Shaw, Bude, Cornwall

Sad news indeed - sorry to hear that.
I didn't know him personally, but I've encountered Steamchicken and Chynewyrde Morris at Festivals several times.
Statistics in the news are very different when they suddenly apply to people you know.

Sad news indeed. Dave's message outlining all the bands Ted was a member of reminds me that it must be 40+ years since I first met him in Somerville Gentleman's Band.

That's smashing. Thank you, Starship. The mutual friend I referred to is the chap in the middle on fiddle and vocals...

Thank you, Dave, for beating me to it. I first met Ted in the folk clubs of Coventry and Kenilworth in the early 70s when I was at Warwick University - and then he married my best friend from school, Sue. The two of them have remained my rock solid friends over the years, picking me up when I needed it, and then presented me with my godson, Matt, who has inherited musical talent from both parents and has played on most of my albums. We were due to spend an evening with Sue and Ted over the weekend of 22nd March, together with my brother and sister-in-law. My brother's health meant that we decided it was best to cancel the plan just in case (and of course the lockdown has followed). I've since learnt from Sue that Ted (and she) would have been carrying the virus at that point.
I am saddened beyond measure at Ted's death, and desperately sad too for Sue who has been ill with the virus and has of course been unable to visit Ted or spend time with her sons, Matt and Joe.
I'm told by Sue and Matt that there will be a great celebration of Ted's life once the lockdown is over. That great session party in the sky just got a lot jazzier and funkier as Ted takes out his harmonica to play.

I heard that the members of the current band got together for a practice, and that's when they all got infected, by whom they do not know. They all recovered except for Ted, who wasn't a well man in any case. Just about the whole concert of the Somerville Gentlemen's Band, at their reunion last September, is on YouTube, and it's all treasurable. Give it a listen. Ted is on harmonica, mostly seated on the right, though I haven't listened to every song as yet. In view of the present horrible situation it's wonderful that the band managed that get-together last autumn.

All the more poignant as Matt can't get dow to visit.

Steamchicken will not be the same, but then it has morphed slowly over the years.

Was he in any way connected with Edward Tudor Pole? Who is hopefully still alive.

Sad news, but thanks for the links that give those who didn't know Ted a good feel for his contribution . My condolences to all those who know and love him. I have added Ted to the "In Memoriam" thread.

RIP

Mike Greenwood conveyed the sad news that Ted had died. He left a very big hole in dance music - sincere sympathies to Sue, Steamchicken, Jam And Crumpet, Chinewrde Morris and Anne Lister, who has lost a very dear friend

Just heard the news about Ted and am devastated. I first met Ted and the rest of “The Gents” in 1977 when I first booked them for the Topic Folk Club in Bradford. They were booked every year until the disbanded at their final concert at Warwick Festival in 1982. During that time I got to know the band as friends meeting up at various festivals. During recent years I had caught up with ted and Sue again when they appeared at local ceilidhs with Steamchicken . I had hoped to get to the concert last year in Warwick but circumstances prevented it. Farewell Ted the world has lost a Top Lad and a fine musician.
