Mudcat YouTube channel?

18 Apr 20 - 02:44 AM (#4046748)
Subject: Mudcat YouTube channel?
From: Dave the Gnome

Would anyone be interested in posting videos to a Mudcat channel on YouTube? We could use it as a sort of online folk club, particularly during the current crisis. We could of course just post to the Mudcat Facebook page but many on here have said they say away from Facebook.

Or does anyone have a better idea?

Why don't you set it up, Dave? I think it's a great idea. You can post links here in this thread.
I've been enjoying your online performances.

Well, it's only 12:30 AM. Probably an hour before bedtime. Mornings are boring, so I sleep through them.
Remember Mudcatter Alison in Australia? Take a listen to this:

Great idea.

Would it help to have two channels, one purely of performances by Mudcatters and another one if things Mudcatters want to point us to?

Don't people already post their videos on the Mudcat Facebook page?

Subject: RE: Mudcat YouTube channel?
From: Dave the Gnome

I think they do, Vic, but as I said in the OP a number of people have said they don't do Faceache.

Anyhow, making this up as I go along now...

We have a Youtube channel here with just one video on it - by me. Sorry :-)

How do we want to play this? People send me videos and I post them? As it is a 'brand' channel I can also add another admin. Maybe someone in the US? Joe?

It's my first venture onto a YouTube channel so I am open to any ideas that would be better.

We don't like your videos posted on that Facebook page as the only place because everything disappears too quickly. Please consider shifting to the YouTube platform.

You may get less pain out of a Mudcat Playlist on YouTube, this would avoid all the extra uploading and people can just send you links to the upload on their own channel.

You could set up playlists based on a theme (e.g. Child Ballads, Deportation Ballads, Bawdy Ballads).

Added a video from Nick Dow - Thanks Nick - and a couple of playlists. One called "Videos of other Mudcatters" which is self explanatory but I haven't put mudcat names on them. I'd rather leave that to individuals.

The other playlist is called "Other videos of interest" and I want to use that to link anyone or any music that may have come up in discussuon. I have just added one song by Walter Pardon to date. Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.

Is there anyone over the water from may that is happy to collaborate on this channel or am I going to have to volunteer someone :-)

Dave, you started this thread - are you sorting Mudcat performances from all of the performances of others that Mudcatter's simply share because they like them? Are you looking at the Facebook page where these things get posted - you could grab links from those performances and ad them where appropriate on YouTube. That's enough work to keep you out of trouble for a while!

I'm putting performances by Mudcatters on, Stilly. There are also 2 playlists. One linking Mudcatter performances and one for videos of significance to Mudcatters.

I'll have a look at the Facebook page and see how best to treat performances on their. Add to a playlist or upload the video.

I'm still looking for a collaborator. Someone from the US if possible but not compulsory.

Is there a difference between the uploads shown under the Video tab and those shown on the 'Videos by Mudcatters' playlist? They all seem to be by Mudcatters, but none of the former appear with the latter and vice versa.

Doug,

My understanding is that the uploads are videos not previously published on YouTube, while the playlist is meant to assemble videos already posted on YouTube by 'Catters.

The "no views" issue is a bug with YouTube -- it just takes a minute to tally a view. I think it has something to do with how they keep track of view statistics, but that's just speculation.

The benefit of being a subscriber is that you would get notified via email when a video is posted (if you choose, though there are other settings) and that it makes the account and its new videos easier to find in the future. Rather than going here and finding the thread and then finding the link, you can simply type in youtube's address and then go to your subscriptions page.

I've got loads of stuff on YouTube, some with my other half Mary Humphreys and some on my own, and much of the recent stuff a deliberate "lockdown" project to make up for the lack of live gigs and sessions. Here's a selection from the last month or so:

The Tankard of Ale - old 3/2 English tune
Red Running Rue - sung by Mary with me on 1 row melodeon
The Merry Month / Squirrel Up a Tree - two jigs
Geld Him Lasses / Hornpipe by Purcell - two more 3/2 hornpipes
The Road To Poynton - tune by Robert Harbron played by me solo
The Railway - jig played by me solo
The Lady in the Boat / St George's Day two jigs, played by both of us
The False Bride - sung by Mary with banjo
The Trees They Grow So High - version collected in Cambridgeshire, sung by Mary
A Sailors Life - sung by Mary unaccompanied
Knole Park / One More Dance and Then - played by Mary and me
Pajdusko Horo - Macedonian dnce tune in 5/8 time played by me
Watson's Hornpipe - multitracked two melodeons + cello

Feel free to add some or any of those to the playlist.
Lots more (especially melodeon tunes) on my YouTube channel

After one month, I am disappointed by the lack of response to the Mudcat YouTube channel, even allowing for the vagueries of the way views are counted by YouTube. I didn't expect the videos to go viral but I did expect more interest from Mudcat members, if only out of curiosity, to put faces to names.

Dave, I have e-mailed a link to my rendition of "Ain't Nobody's Business". Could you upload it please. We might as well give it another go and see if we can generate any more interest.

My two contributions are in the public section of my YouTube channel, but only so that you could get to them to upload onto the Mudcat channel. Like Doug Chadwick (May18th), I was surprised and a tad disappointed at the dearth of responses regarding clips of Catters to be added to the new You Tube “Mudcat Channel” started recently by Dave the Gnome.

There had been an earlier thread detailing Catter clips (that runs from 2008 – 2018) and it was fairly popular – but the continuing thread that I started “for the new decade” of 2020 onwards, has not really garnered much attention!

So I investigated that early thread to see if many of the earlier music submissions were still online – and almost all that I checked (from HEAPS of links), were still playing!!
True, some of our Catters have passed on, but often their music remains (for now at least).

I started at the bottom (from the latest posts) and in general, only chose to look at the latest link posted by a Mudcat Member whose name I recognised from over the years.
Also a couple of Guests whom I recognised as regular Posters. Now, I realise that my recognition means doodley squat, but, I had to start somewhere and I couldn’t watch EVERYTHING!! :)

So I have taken the liberty of picking out from my many viewings, just a few of those that took my fancy on that day - and I sure hope it’s okay to highlight them here, Dave! – and just maybe some could be added to the new Mudcat channel????????

Q. BUT, would you have to get permission all over again??? I dunno ….. I would hope not :(

I shall endeavour to post some videos and do some links today. I'm still looking for a co-conspirator to assist. Preferably state side so we will pick up posts in different time zones.

I have added the Micca and Crane Driver ones plus a couple from RJs list. I am leaving the rest of the list to see how we can best divide up the downloads and postings so we ae not duplicating work.

CND - I have PM's you back.

What is the legal position about performing copyrighted songs and posting them on YouTube?

I think that if anyone puts in a complaint to YouTube their default position is to remove it. If whever posted it can show it is not in breach of copyright they will reinstate it.

Hullo Dave, I've not posted here in a while. I thought that I'd check to see what's been happening and saw that you're looking for YT videos from Mudcat members. I have loads of music on YT. I consider myself a Folk/Blues artist. Here are a few of my music videos. Feel free to add as many as you wish to your page...

Dave, I've been a 'Catter since the days of Digital Tradition and am happy to support this project. I've been able to visit the Mudcat channel but when I attempt to upload a video it appears to steer me into creating a new channel. It seems I can't do it. For what it's worth I have my own channel. If the mechanics of all this make it handy to move videos from my channel to the Mudcat channel you are most welcome to any and all of them. If it is better for me to upload them myself I fear I need a bit of direction if you please.
Kindly let me know. The link to my channel is below.

Hi Rex. No, you can't upload. Only cnd and I are managers of the channel at the moment. I will take a look at your channel and put some of your stuff on the Mudcat one.

I've done down to the end of Reggie's list. Where there is a lot, like Reggie's, I have put a couple on the 'front page' and the rest on the playlist of videos by Mudcatters.

I saw that GfS's video was too large to upload so I have put that on the playlist too.

OK - I'm up to date apart from some I got by PM which I will put up now.

Rex - I have put one of yours on the 'Front Page' and 3 or 4 on the playlist "Videos by Mudcatters"

Pete - I could not get at your video. You need to make it public.

If anyone wants anything specific putting on the front page or adding to the playlist, let me or cnd know.

Cheers

Dave

To Joe Offer,

Hi Joe. Need your help. On June 24, 2020
I posted about a New Jersey singer songwriter
named Mike Sinatra. I don't know how to post
where people can click on those two songs to
actually take you to those songs that I mentioned.
Joe, if you have time, could you please enter
that on my post?
Thank you in advance.
Lin

Lin:

At the bottom of the page, to the right of the "submit message" button is some blue-colored text that says "Make a link ('blue clicky')" -- click on that. It will open a page in a new tab. In the first line of the form (to the right of the words "Link URL" copy and paste your link from YouTube. In the second line, paste what words you want the link to say (for example, if the video is of the song "We Don't Know Why" you would put the link to that song in the first box and the words We Don't Know Why in the second box). Once you're done, click "create link" and it will give you something that looks like this:

We Don't Know Why

Then copy and paste that into the posting box that you type in and boom -- you've got a link!
