Hi, I'm learning to play slide on my acoustic, and was thinking maybe I'd gotten to the point where I could learn some songs. I can't find any tabs for the kind of stuff I want to play and thought maybe you guys could help. I want stuff like Son House's 'Pearline', any Robert Johnson, anything from Son's 1965 rerecord album.. any help is appreciated. Thanks!

If you are willing to buy stuff, rather than get it free you can try Homespun Tapes and Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop. Both offer transcriptions and lessons. Stefan Grossman also offers free tabs at his site, but I haven't seen any for slide. He also has a discussion group called "The Woodshed" which you can access from his site.

I think Happy Traum, the proprieter of Homespun tapes has transcribed most of the Robert Johnson works and some of the "roots" of Robert Johnson--Son House, Charlie Patton, etc. Strange enough, I think these transcriptions are offered by Stefan Grossman rather then Homespun--maybe both.

Kyle,

Try this site

www.egd.igd.fhg.de/~kugraw/slidingzone.html

It has tab for Fred McDowell, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, Taj Mahal, Blind Willie Johnson and a few others. I'm sure if you were to learn some of this stuff that you could figure out "Pearline" (one of my favourites)on your own.

Good luck,

Steve Latimer

Woody Mann is another author who has published books of tab. For example, The Complete Robert Johnson. I like his tab better than Grossman's. Grossman's is non-standard and doesn't give a hint about rhythm and timing unless you look at the parallel standard music notation. Most of the Grossman books I have print that on a different page than the tab so it's a real pain.
