I suppose it is an easy way of visiting parts of the UK or further afield than normal - nice bit of cross culture etc For starters I have been to Faversham Stilebridge Folk at the Drum Deal Dorking What else is around and welcoming new singers? 26 Apr 20 - 03:56 PM (#4048708) Subject: RE: Virtual singarounds on Zoom From: Joe Offer I've been to the Bray Singers' circle south of Dublin, to Abby Sale's "Condigital Fourth Monday" in North Carolina, to circles in Oregon and Seattle, and to various singarounds in Northern California. I have two big screens on my desk, and it really enhances the experience. I have half a screen reserved for Mudcat, and the other half for the current singer. The other screen has a "Hollywood Squares" display of all the participants. As people sing, I look up their songs on Mudcat and post things about the songs in Zoom chat. It also gives me a chance to see if we need more work on songs posted at Mudcat, and to request or post songs we don't have. Everyone is welcome to join in that effort. The more music stuff we have posted at Mudcat, the happier this place is. -Joe- |

It's huge, and you all get split fairly randomly into groups of 20 or so (which is a manageable size.) |

27 Apr 20 - 11:29 AM (#4048914) Subject: RE: Virtual singarounds on Zoom From: CupOfTea Fox Valley Folklore Society has had a Wednesday night sung around for well over 40 years, so turning to Zoom happened pretty quick to keep that tradition going. It was grand to see folks I love and miss from Illinois there, as well as Phil Cooper with Susan zooming in from da UP. Any of the other zoom sessions, I've heard about on Facebook, frequently with the zoom showing up in FB, with no participation besides comments. One ballad session "at the Mermaid" got zoombomed with obscenity - showing the impossibility of public announcements. Local online collaborative concerts had the same problem. If you broaden it from singarounds to singing sessions, and sing-alongs, there have been some great times on Facebook from David Coffin, for the Revels organization with a Spring Sing, Hymn Sing, and Pub Sings, all with lyric sheets available ahead of time. Not only do you know what's on, but you've got a chance to learn new songs, as the recording of it stays up after the live session is over. Some folks from the Old Town School of Folk Music have been doing FB sing alongs as well. Joanne in Cleveland, watching the grass grow |

All done on Zoom with up to 500 participants from around the world. 4-part harmony and lyrics provided before each session, and free, tho donations encouraged. Huge fun. Check out the Massive Singlet website or Facebook page. There are other sessions for children, and for ukulele players. |

Signed up for 2 more "Massive Singlets" this coming week. Doing 3 or 4 sessions per week on Zoom or Skype for tunes, taking it in turns to play. |

For several months I have been enjoying the Monday night session. Could this thread be used to promote more sessions around the world? When I go on holiday I try to visit folk clubs and sessions. While we are restricted to virtual events, this could provide a wonderful opportunity of international cross-fertilisation. I respect that some sing rounds may want to be restricted to their own communities, but otherwise we have the opportunity to promote the folk community which might rub off when clubs and sessions are able to physically open again. Also, is there a case for some hybrid sessions in the future? SPOmethong for a future discussion. |
