There is a mudcat thread on this already ~ Jenni Murray ~ Woman's hour it is very interesting Radio 4 ~ jenni grew up and went to school in Barnsley and went the folk club at about 15 y.o. at the Wheatsheaf with her girl friend ~ fan of Dave Burland and Joan Baez

Ray - my first visits to Barnsley FC were in the early 70s when it was at the George.
Jenni mentioned the Wheatsheaf and if my maths is correct then she would be talking of 1965/6. A copy I have of the Folk Directory for 1967 gives the club address as the (King) George and Derek as the organiser.
Derek at that time lived on Racecommon Road and the Wheatsheaf (now no more) was on Racecommon Road so who knows?
Derek (and Dorothy) unfortunately would not be able verify which venue is correct for Jenni's Diary.
I suspect she is probably right.
There is very little on Barnsley folk club or most other folk clubs for that matter on the web - shame - and we have probably missed the opportunity to put that right.

Wheatsheaf would be correct Malcolm ~ it had about 3 folk different folk clubs over about 50 years ~ at that stage the club would have moved from the Alhambra pub with all originals like Tony Heald, Derek and Dorothy and Dave Burland and maybe others

There was at some stage a request from Barnsley BMBC to taken on guest club at the refurbished Civic Hall Centenary rooms around 1968 (had been the museum) the main building housed the Libraries

Tony Heald did the hosting and many professional guests were booked ~ Dave should have been there but often was booked elsewhere like Sheffield or some other paid gig!! Was younger end entertainment and quite well regimented quiet was the order of the day!! Tony was a teacher! It was Saturday night ~ saw everyone there, Capstick, Brimstone, Strawbs, Bellamy etc

Derek would sing as would Jim Potter ~Dorothy was rarely there

So Derek and Dorothy started their own club at the King George upstairs on Mondays ~ guests were also booked at The George

Yes I remember seeing you at the King George, Malcolm and you gave me a song you had learnt on a piece of paper that club lasted to early 1970s I think

Cheers Dick
If it was indeed June 1964 then Jenni was only just 14 years old - if wiki(d)pedia is correct - what a strumpet!
They have her DOB as 12 May 1950.

Ray - that explains my doubting the Wheatsheaf. It does not appear in the 1967 Folk Directory so do we presume it had folded by then?

Dick I don't know about the cricket but I was scoring regularly - on the rugby field where tries equal success - funny old language English!

Malcolm the Wheatsheaf organisers I suspect would have moved to the Civic ~ Dave Burland may remember and Dave Lawson did his dissertation on the History

I will post on fb
