28 Nov 05 - 10:16 AM (#1615491) Subject: Tune Req: Don Bilston, Farewell to steam From: GUEST,Jan Hello all, I am new to this forum, so I hope I'm doing this right - please forgive (and enlighten me) if I don't.. I am looking for the tunes of the songs on Don Bilston's album 'Farewell to steam' (Transatlantic Records Xtra1084, 1969-70, to be precise). I have found the lyrics of two of its songs (The billycock hat and The fireman's song) in the (very impressive!) Mudcat database, but I am searching for the music. Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated. |

Pete Coe recorded 'The Fireman's Song' on his 1997 CD 'Long Company' (BASH CD45). Worth having for the rest of the CD, as well as 'The Fireman's Song'. If you have difficulty getting hold of it, PM me and I'll let you know how you can get it. |

15 May 07 - 04:48 PM (#2052747) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Don Bilston, Farewell to steam From: GUEST,Pete Skellon Many years ago I obtained from the publishers of the music the melody line and words to about 6 of the songs from the album (without chords). I've since worked out chords for some of the other songs also. Anyone still interested? I don't know of any other albums by Dob Bilston, but prior to the LP he had produced an EP with four of the songs from the LP (different versions). Hope this is of interst to someone. pete.skellon@lineone.net |

I miss my uncle very deeply, not only was he a very talented man and a character, but very loving. |

04 Jul 20 - 02:24 PM (#4062806) Subject: RE: Origins: LinerNotes/Farewell to Steam/Don Bilston From: GUEST,Alan Wood I have a copy of the LP and its sleeve....any use ? I haven't, however, seen a liner. I used to fire locomotives on the Nene Valley Railway and the regular driver I often worked with gave me his well worn copy. He used to see Don at his local folk club in Birmingham back in the 60's. I use to sing The Fireman's Song years ago but on reaching the 'grade' it just lost its appeal....along with the 'romance' of steam. |
04 Jul 20 - 04:15 PM (#4062821) Subject: RE: Origins: LinerNotes/Farewell to Steam/Don Bilston From: GUEST,Jamie That’s very cool. I learned about him for the first time from Jim Mageean and Pat Sheridan. I have an image of what could either be a sleeve or the back of the album, but it’s fuzzy and illegible. I’d like to know more about him and his music. And I’d love to be able to read the information that came with the album. Does the back of the album have the notes about his songs printed on it? |

Our personal messages system won't work unless you're a registered member. If you'd like to sign up, contact me, joe@mudcat.org. Membership is free - it just makes certain features of Mudcat work like messaging. You'll notice up above that I've crosslinked to our other threads on Don Bilston. The "Farewell to Steam" thread gives the email address of a family member who may be able to help you. Eventually, I'll combine this thread with the other "Farewell" thread, but I didn't want you to have trouble finding your way. -Joe Offer, Mudcat Music Editor- |
