07 Jan 00 - 12:42 AM (#159417) Subject: A lock button for hearme From: Jon Freeman A number of us have found that one problem with hearme is that the talk/live button does not stay down. This is fine for talking but all sorts of methods including toes on the keyboard have been used to play instruments. I have written a small program that enables the talk button to be locked to make life a little easier although it does not stop the time out problem (maybe one day, I'll sort that). If anybody wants to try it, I have made it available at my Web site: (Click to download the file) The files contained in the zip file must be extracted or copied to a folder named c:\hearme\stuff for the program to work. The operation is simple. When this program is running, if the lock button is up, hearme works as normal. If the lock button is down, if the talk button is clicked with the mouse, it will stay down and not release until either the F9 key is pressed or time out occurs. I make this available under the following conditions: 1: If anybody chooses to use it, they do so entirely at their own risk. 2: I offer no support. Jon |

I kept with a time limit partly in case something like my lock program did manage to completly lock the button - ie not allow it to be released and partly because I have encountered people holding the button for 30 minutes or more in other hearme rooms, not that this problem will occur with the group of people that use this room. I am quite flexible over the use of a time limit and will extend it or remove it completely depending on the wishes of the the regular users. If anybody has found it too short, please let me know. I have no immediate plans of updating the program as I am not aware of any problems with it (Mbo complained about a crash but I remain convinced that the problem was nothing to do with my program). If anybody has any suggestions as to possible improvements or has experienced problems using it, please let me know and I will consider making changes but one change I will not consider is trying to embed it in the hearme page (one solution involves knowledge of plugins to support each different browsers which I don't have and the only other ones I can think of are very messy and are more likely to create problems than solve them). If I do make any changes, at the same time, I will get rid of the need for the program to be installed in a specific drive/ directory (just the way my C++ compiler went about statically linking the DLL to the EXE file) but I don't think this requirement is causing any real problems so I won't change just for that. Having said all that, to the best of my knowledge, a Mudcat system may well be in the pipline so all of this may become redundant. For now, personally, I would like to be able to get hold of the Hearme deveolpment kit and write something a little bit more advanced than our current hearme system but that costs money and is out of my reach. Who knows, perhaps that is one of the development systems that Max has been looking at and the new Mudcat system could be a "super hearme". Jon |

I have checked through my Windows documentation and that states that NT does support the only functions that I can imagine causing a problem (SetWindowsHookEx and the assosciated callback function) so I think it will work.
