BS: A lock button for hearme

Subject: A lock button for hearme
From: Jon Freeman

A number of us have found that one problem with hearme is that the talk/live button does not stay down. This is fine for talking but all sorts of methods including toes on the keyboard have been used to play instruments. I have written a small program that enables the talk button to be locked to make life a little easier although it does not stop the time out problem (maybe one day, I'll sort that).

If anybody wants to try it, I have made it available at my Web site: (Click to download the file) The files contained in the zip file must be extracted or copied to a folder named c:\hearme\stuff for the program to work.

The operation is simple. When this program is running, if the lock button is up, hearme works as normal. If the lock button is down, if the talk button is clicked with the mouse, it will stay down and not release until either the F9 key is pressed or time out occurs.

I make this available under the following conditions:

1: If anybody chooses to use it, they do so entirely at their own risk.

2: I offer no support.

Jon

Thanks Jon: I was wondering what happened to everyone at the hearme link after the New Year. Hope to talk/chat with you soon.

YES!!!!!

Jon: I downloaded it and used it last night in the Hearme sing! It worked great!!!! gone are my juryrigged attempts to hold down that pesky F9 key! No more finger cramps. My big toe can begin to function again. Yahoo!!!

I would recommend this little utility for anyone that want to join us in the Hearme circles.

ALAS, into the scrap-heap of obsolete technological innovation goes my M-1, A-1, hand-operated, air-cooled, portable combination stapler and F-9 holder!

I still find that the best F9 holder in the business is a bottle of Absobine Junior (the 4FL OZ one) set atop the F9 key. Works like a charm!

All I have to do (Windows OS) is hold down the scroll lock key, hit the control button then release both keys to hold the mike on. When I'm done, I just hit the scroll lock again.

Laura, are you sure that you are not thinking of the version of Hearme that is used in the chat rooms on the Hearme.Com site? That version is different to the version that people place on their own web space (the type we are using) and does have it's own lock mechanism built in.

But BillD, you don't understand....If I could form chords fast enough to frail that fast, I probably wouldn't have that damn bottle of Absorbine sitting here!!

...do I copy the zip file to the above-named folder? Then what side of the mouse unhinges it? (oh, this ignorance is embarrassing...)harpgirl

...you make a folder and subfolder named as described... c:/hearme/stuff...put the unzipped file in it, and make a shortcut to it on your desktop....it brings up a cute little box to click..

In HearMe, I found, I had to first click the 'talk' button(not push the f9 key).., THEN click the 'lock'....

Just a tidbit of info....HearMe seems to be heading in the right direction. they have announced (several months ago, actually) a Mac product "Roger Wilco" which seems to be headed in the HearMe -voice chat direction. It's still in testing, but it looks like they may get a cross platform HearMe chat sooner or later...

Re Holding down the F9 key...

My favorite solution is my solution for everything... Blue Tack!! That putty for hanging posters and such... a good size wad of that, or Silly Putty I'd imagine, or Playdough... or such stuff works wonderfully... and it won't be knocked off the keyboard....

There's a Time Limit on Hearme?? How long a limit??

at the moment I believe Jon's site has it set at ten minutes

From: Jon Freeman

Yes, it is still set at 10 minutes. I kept with a time limit partly in case something like my lock program did manage to completly lock the button - ie not allow it to be released and partly because I have encountered people holding the button for 30 minutes or more in other hearme rooms, not that this problem will occur with the group of people that use this room.

I am quite flexible over the use of a time limit and will extend it or remove it completely depending on the wishes of the the regular users. If anybody has found it too short, please let me know.

has anyone tried "Firetalk"?...looks promising!...many similarities to ICQ...with HearMe thrown in...(and, if I read it right, more than one person 'can' talk at once!! up to 7, if I understand it)...real singalongs!...and they have LIVE online audio help forums! I have listened in to the forums, but not had conversations yet

Jon, is the permanent edition of your HearMe lock available at the link I added in the first message, or do you have a newer version?

Joe, your link is correct. I have no immediate plans of updating the program as I am not aware of any problems with it (Mbo complained about a crash but I remain convinced that the problem was nothing to do with my program).

If anybody has any suggestions as to possible improvements or has experienced problems using it, please let me know and I will consider making changes but one change I will not consider is trying to embed it in the hearme page (one solution involves knowledge of plugins to support each different browsers which I don't have and the only other ones I can think of are very messy and are more likely to create problems than solve them). If I do make any changes, at the same time, I will get rid of the need for the program to be installed in a specific drive/ directory (just the way my C++ compiler went about statically linking the DLL to the EXE file) but I don't think this requirement is causing any real problems so I won't change just for that.

Having said all that, to the best of my knowledge, a Mudcat system may well be in the pipline so all of this may become redundant. For now, personally, I would like to be able to get hold of the Hearme deveolpment kit and write something a little bit more advanced than our current hearme system but that costs money and is out of my reach. Who knows, perhaps that is one of the development systems that Max has been looking at and the new Mudcat system could be a "super hearme".

Being a bit paranoid about such things, does it work with NT4 ?

Subject: RE: BS: A lock button for hearme
From: Jon Freeman

I don't know if it has been tested on NT and the only versions of Windows that I know it has been proven to work on are 95 and 98.

I have checked through my Windows documentation and that states that NT does support the only functions that I can imagine causing a problem (SetWindowsHookEx and the assosciated callback function) so I think it will work.

And what's wrong with good old fashioned Heath Robinson contraptions using string, the spring loaded lamp and an empty wine bottle (Domaine de Coussergues 1998 from Fortnum and Mason, bloody excellent!!) that the cat operates by sitting on the monitor??

I can verify that it works with NT5 (Win2K). It seems to me I've used it with NT4 as well but not for a long time.
