Òran na beairt

’S i bheairt a rinn mo shàrachadh;
’S i bheairt a rinn mo shàrachadh.
Nuair a chuir mi innte spàl
Bhrist ise h-uile snàth a bh’ ann;
’S i bheairt a rinn mo shàrachadh.

Ged nach eil mi eòlach oirr’
Tha eagal orm nach còrd i rium
Tha na h-iomallan cho dlùth
’S chan eil sùil far ’m bu chòir dhith bhith.

’S a bheil sibh an dùil am pàigh i dhomh
Nam buinn i ri mo nàdar-sa
Ma bhios sin fìor, gun tèid mi fhìn
A-null air sgrìob a dh’Astràilia.

’S e chanas cuid dhe mo chàirdean rium,
“’S ann ort a bha am fàiligeadh.
“Bha thu gun diù is tu bha faoin
“Nuair a thug thu ’n taobhs’ a’ phlàigh bha sin.”

’S ged bheirinn Eachuinn Sheòrais ’ic’
’S gun cur e i ann an òrdugh dhomh
’S e chanas e rium chan eil innt’ ach a’ bhrùid
Thàinig a-nall à Uig ’s nach bu chòir i sin.

It is a song about weaving Harris Tweed, and there is a recording to listen to at https://thecroft.wordpress.com/2010/09/11/murdo-kennedy/ and also on the Fife Gaelic Group facebook page

thanks, Runrigfan

Wasn't there another Mudcat discussion thread which mentioned a Gaelic song about an electric loom?

aye, the Lochies also recorded a song called " A Bheart Agus Cumhachd An Dealan" (The Electric-Powered Loom) Dealan means both electricity and lightning. RunrigFan posted another thread with a Lochies discography.

Na Lochies, Òran na Beairt

Tawana Maramba, Òran na Beairt Tawana introduces and recites the song before singing it, to assist learners.

my rough translation of the first verse, The loom has frustrated me. When I put a shuttle into it, it broke every thread that was there, the loom has worn me out.

The loom has worn me out!
When I put a shuttle in it,
it broke every thread that was in it.
The loom has worn me out!

Although I am not familiar with it
I am afraid it won't suit me.
The heddles are too close together,
and there is not an eye where it should be.

Do you think it will pay me?
Or that I will get on well with it?
If this is true, I will go
off on a trip to Australia.

Some of my friends say to me:
"You made a mistake.
You were silly, and lacking sense
when you brought that pest here!"

If I get Hector to it,
to put it in order for me,
he'll say to me: "It's a brute
that came over from Uig, unfortunately!"
