31 Aug 20 - 05:28 AM (#4070222) Subject: BS: Stonehaven, Scotland. From: Eric the Viking Hi all. I am wondering what the music scene is in and around Stonehaven? At the moment I live in Largs where ( until Covid) a group of us played in the Waterside pub every Wednesday afternoon, where Irvine and Houston folk clubs were easily reachable for floor singers/musicians and the Eglington arms at upper Skelmorlie hosted an electric/folky session, we have Largs folk nights with Talisk. With an impending grandchild, Mrs Viking has itchy feet again and Stonehaven looks the likely destination. Does anyone have any information about the area and joinable music? ( Obviously Covid is stopping everything at the moment) I can hopefully get dialysis at Stonehaven and at least at Aberdeen R I. Any information, advice, knowledge will help in the decision making process. Thankyou. |

From: Johnny J In normal times, the folk club is held on a Friday evening at the community centre and there used to be various weekly sessions on Thursday in rotating bars. https://www.stonehavenfolkclub.co.uk/ Aberdeen Folk Club is on Wednesdays and the last bus gets back to Stonehaven afterwards. Also sessions in Aberdeen , of course. |

I actually saw him first in Honningsvåg in Northern Norway. The two statues face each other although there is a lot of water in between. :-) There's also the famous (in song) Baltic Street. |

From: Tattie Bogle One of t=THE best festivals anywhere, in July, which we have been going to for a good many years: of course, this year, as with many others, it was cancelled but they still ran a very good series of online events: concerts, workshops, competitions, etc. And Stonehaven Folk Club: a really friendly club with weekly events on Friday nights, some sessions, some with guests. They have been running weekly Zoom sessions since lockdown, sometimes with a guest spot, others "just" members singing/playing. An "away weekend" once a year or couple of years, which is great too. Not too far from Aberdeen, which has its weekly Folk Club on a Wednesday night (currently also online). And a bunch of other folk clubs and festivals around the North-East of Scotland if you're up for travelling a bit further. Just love the place: would willingly move there (live in Edinburgh) tho' maybe not town centre, which has had its flooding problems! Most of the rest of the town is uphill out of it! |

I think you are probably talking about "The Carron" self proclaimed home of the deep fried Mars bar. It's right next to the "Carron Water" which flows up the side. Also, it's at the "Harbour end" of the town but the actual harbour is still about ten minutes walk away. Incidentally, the other well known chippie "The Bay" is also not very far away from the other river "Cowie Water" Just a couple of hundred yards. However, there is no harbour but the Beach Promenade is also lovely. Incidentally, the fish and chip on the square is also very good although it isn't as well known as the other two. It's still much better than in most other towns though. |

We know Stonehaven quite well....actually The Bay, followed by the ice cream shop next door. I have trepidation but....... always up for an adventure. Have had five years+ in Largs, spectacularly beautiful. Have enjoyed playing in pubs and local folk clubs.... have no idea when it will start again, though we are making small steps. Will miss my musician friends. Have dialysed in Stonehaven at Christmas. Lots to look forward to, but packing the house, dismantling the model railway and packing away my books, instruments and paraphernalia fills me with dread. Let alone selling, buying and moving. Oh well....... onwards and sideways if not upwards. |
