However it lifted my spirits to find out that Mike Yates recording of Johnny Doughty's singing is (and probably has been for a good while) the back drop to the museum. I only met him once but I'll bet there are a few good memories from others to share here. |

It is housed in the Arches where the old fishermen used to store and mend their nets, and where Johnny Doughty leant a number of songs. And I was surprised to hear the Topic LP of Johnny being played. Very appropriate, I thought. |

10 Sep 20 - 01:22 PM (#4071456) Subject: RE: Johnny Doughty Fishing Museum Brighton From: GUEST,jim bainbridge When living in Kent, in the mid-80s, we picked up Johnny in Rye & took him up to the excellent 'Empress of Russia' folk club in Islington- we'll have a 'good old flanagan' he said At one stage a pint of 'treacle' (his word for Guinness!) was spilt behind him- my wife Francie grabbed a mop from the bar & stood mopping it up behind him- he didn't see this but she did it in rhythm to the song & there was much giggling in the room. He turned round, smiled & grabbed the mop & said 'I'll just swab the decks' & carried on with the song. A lovely man, fine singer & always great fun.... |

Lovely song, kind of bittersweet; a song about hard work and how it shatters any romantic illusions about the freedom of being on boats on the water now that I come to think about it. Guess that's why I come back to it and find something moving and lyrical in it. |
