The Folk Singers and the Bureau: The FBI, the Folk Artists, and the Suppression of the Communist Party, USA, 1939-1945, by Aaron Leonard (2020).

Detailed article follows, concentrating on Burl Ives.

I FOUND THIS READING VERY TELLING, WELL DONE! (MY APPOLOGIES FOR BIG LETTERS … MY VISION IS FAILING).

THE HISTORY READS TRUE TO MY OWN PERSONA; MEMORY. LIKE SO MANY OTHERS, I ALSO WAS TAGRETED BY THE FBI. IT TOOK ME A FEW YEARS TO UNDERSTAND WHY? AS A YOUNG FOLKSINGER, I OFTEN SANG SONGS OF THE OPPRESSED, THE DOWN TRODDEN, THE VULNERABLE ETC...

I NOW THINK THAT ANYONE, IN HOOVER'S EYES, WHO EXPRESSED UNHAPPINESS WITH LIVING IN "WONDERFUL AMERICA" MUST BE A SUSPECT COMMUNIST?

SO SAD. SO VERY SAD. AND HERE WE ARE AGAIN … GOING THROUGH SUCH A SIMILIAR TERRINNY. (SORRY FOR THE POOR SPELLING AND VISION).

Hi, Bob! I have tried to find more information about the organization that supposedly commissioned Pete Seeger's "Oh, had I a golden thread". Author Terry Goodkind has a "Seamstresses Guild" in one or more of his books which is a euphemism for sex workers. Other than that I can't find any NY Seamstresses Guild. Do you have any more information? Thanks.

I have just started reading a new book “The Folk Singers& The Bureau” by Aaron J.Leonard” and think there might be a lot of Mudcatters who would find it as interesting and informative as I do . As the publishers say, it is “ The first book to document the efforts of the FBI against the most famous American folk singers of the mid-twentieth century, including Woody Guthrie, 'Sis Cunningham, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays and Burl Ives. Here is a link to a podcast in which Aaron J. Leonard is interviewed about the book

Thanks Ray -I tried to find the earlier posting (or thread?) about the book but could not. Have you (or has anyone else)got a thread name or a link so that I can access what has already been discussed?
I combined the two threads and put them under the actual title of the book. Watch the message titles to see which is from which.
