"The Painful Plough" in 2003, seventeen songs were chosen, but there were many other examples of Bob's fine singing that Peter Collins recorded but were not included on the CD. 24 Sep 20 - 03:00 PM (#4073013) Subject: RE: Recent Updates Sussex Traditions databas From: Richard Mellish I am delighted to see this stuff but I've found a problem. I have got to one Gordon Hall page with a few songs but if I then click on another page number I am taken back to the same page. This is the same with both Firefox and Chrome. |
24 Sep 20 - 03:26 PM (#4073018) Subject: RE: Recent Updates Sussex Traditions databas From: Vic Smith Richard, I think that I see what the problem is. I followed your link and quite rightly, you clicked on People and then typed in Gordon Hall which brought up our wonderful singer and all the references to him. However you can't see all the songs and articles about him because you still have People clicked and the way the search engine is programmed, it still thinks that is what you are searching for. Try clicking on Records and search for Gordon Hall and you should be able to access the 330+ references to him on the database. That works for me but please let know how you get on and if it doesn't work, I'll see that it is fixed. |

29 Sep 20 - 10:32 AM (#4073606) Subject: RE: Recent Updates Sussex Traditions database From: Steve Gardham Hi Vic, What a marvellous site! I'm just going through Gordon's wonderful material. Do you have any method for flagging up anything particularly unusual or rare? Keep safe Steve |
29 Sep 20 - 11:31 AM (#4073615) Subject: RE: Recent Updates Sussex Traditions database From: Vic Smith Steve, From the home page at https://sussextraditions.org/ there is a link to News & Events and I try to remember to put up new additions to the database there. Of course little or no events at the moments and the news is likely to be additions to the database. Recently uploaded are the individual pages of Michael Blann's manuscript song book which are likely to be of interest to you, but at the moment our search machine is having problems showing the individual pages (at least using Firefox as I do). I will let you know when this is sorted. Otherwise the serendipitous use of the search engine always reveals some neglected gems which you might consider "unusual or rare". |
29 Sep 20 - 04:49 PM (#4073635) Subject: RE: Recent Updates Sussex Traditions database From: Steve Gardham Hi Vic I seem to be able to access the Ms but I can only get the first page of entries. There seems to be an 11-page list but if I click on any of the other numbers it goes back to the first page list. |

01 Oct 20 - 05:16 PM (#4073922) Subject: RE: Recent Updates Sussex Traditions database From: Richard Mellish Thanks Vic for sorting that out for me. There's a wonderful lot there to listen to. Two anomalies: Page 2 of the Gordon Hall results includes two songs from Mrs(?) Gates. And the second song on page 3, "King and keeper" links to the same recording as the previous song, Sussex Molecatcher. |
02 Oct 20 - 09:39 AM (#4074029) Subject: RE: Recent Updates Sussex Traditions database From: Vic Smith Richard wrote:- Page 2 of the Gordon Hall results includes two songs from Mrs(?) Gates. Again, Richard, it's the way standard databases work. If you search for Gordon Hall the search will locate every reference to that name and the details of Mrs Gates include:- Roud number18910 PerformerGates, Mrs. (?) Place Sussex, England Date1972 Source Copy of Arthur Gates cassette via Gordon Hall Broad CategorySong FormatSound recording If for example you were to search for my name there would be none of me performing but lots of articles that I have written or recordings that I have made of Sussex Traditional performers. And the second song on page 3, "King and keeper" links to the same recording as the previous song, Sussex Molecatcher. You are right and Gordon's habit of running one song into another - of which this is a good example - make him a cataloguer's nightmare. We cannot succssfully split the recording into two parts so we have had to give it more than one reference to enable those searching for a particular song to find either. |
03 Oct 20 - 05:08 AM (#4074116) Subject: RE: Recent Updates Sussex Traditions database From: Richard Mellish > Again, Richard, it's the way standard databases work. I had failed to notice the option of advanced search and that the default is a full text search. And thanks for further explanation of the Molecatcher song(s), but I'm still confused. It is much the same in the middle as the usual Molecatcher one, with some extra bits added at the beginning and the end. I can't make out a few words in the first bit, but I don't hear anything that sounds like "king" or "keeper". |
