Ah, got it - appears to have been rejected as ‘impractical’.

Wasn't that Smirker Patel's idea?

Monique, how did you link to that BBC News item? Every time I try to link to BBC News, I get a load of gibberish and the page won’t load.

I don't know. I put "Ascension Island The uk government are considering using this island to send asylum seekers" into Google and BBC is the 4th site on my page. Then I made a link -I never use the "blue clicky" as it never takes long addresses, I write the whole

Ah, I should have known better! The end should be "I write the whole [what to write to make a link] stuff but I wrote the beginning of said [what to write to make a link] and of course it didn't displayed! "What to write to make a link" is here. I once wrote the "formula" on a piece of paper and I've written it so many times that I know it.

Doesn't the short-tailed shearwater nest there, and only there?

Seems to be a very good idea. quote bonzo
extraordinary comment from an accountant, do you have details of cost or cost of sending to papua new guinea or moldavia , other destinations that appear to have been suggested, by patel

Nothing wrong in principle,
but a mothballed cruise ship might be more humane offshore accommodation for processing refugees...

That'd send the daily mail readership into apoplectic seizures...!!!

Surprising they don't seem to have considered the Falklands in this context.

Well at least you could fly them there. Isn't it a military staging post for the Falklands?

The reports of using ships as detention centres for asylum seekers. Smacks of Dickensian macabre. It was muted in this century for prisons.

We are certainly living in interesting times

They could use cruiseships, which currently aren't too popular for holidays.

According to this article in the Scotsman there have been various ideas thrown about with one being Ascension Island but that it has already been discounted. Other things that could be considered are seemingly cruise ships. Also incredible enough as it sounds even oil platforms were considered a possible option but industry experts discounted the idea at an early stage over safety. It seems they are throwing ideas about rather than all these being actual solid plans. Another option which Patel has refused to rule out is using Scottish islands which would cause a stramash here as the Scottish gvt are not in support. https://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/nicola-sturgeon-responds-reports-uk-government-plans-use-scottish-island-refugee-processi

Crikey I should think that an oil platform offers considerably more safety and comfort than a dinghy!!!!!!!!!
