2020 Obit: Mudcatter CET - Edmund Thomas

10 Oct 20 - 08:41 AM (#4074966)
Subject: Obit: Mudcatter CET
From: Charmion

My dear husband, known to many here as Edmund or CET, died last night of a completely unexpected heart attack.

He was 63 years old, and in robust health as far as we knew.

Edmund served 30 years in the Canadian Army, and his ashes will be buried in Ottawa at the National Military Cemetery when it is safe to travel.

I'm absolutely speechless, Charmion.
So much to say and no words to say it.

He is the love of your life,
and that love is both joy and sorrow for you now.
Of course you are in my thoughts and in my heart.

Dear Charles Edmund was a beautiful gift to my sister and a true friend to his in-laws. To his clients, he was Rumpole of the Armed Forces. To Canada, he was a barrister at arms, prepared to go into the shit and keep things legal. From Canada, to the vineyards and concentration areas of West Germany, to poor, pitiful Haiti, to downwind of the Poo Pond in Kandahar, Afghanistan, he championed, in no specific order, observance of the Law of Armed Conflict and the rights of the accused. He sang lustily (as required) and on key.

I only knew Edmund some 23 years. Damn it, I feel as if we have all been robbed.

So sorry, Charmion. Bad enough when it's expected. This must be devastating. You are in my thoughts and, while I know it's unlikely I can help in any practical way, if you think of anything I can do to help from across the pond, just ask.

Oh Charmian, what an absolute bummer. Such a pleasant chap, and the first person I ever saw in a utility kilt, didn't even know they existed before then.
Thinking of you and Edmund too.

Oh, Charmion, I am so sorry to hear this. I don't know if you remember that I, too, lost a beloved to an unexpected heart attack (in 2003), and the love and concern of Mudcatters worldwide was one of the things that sustained me. Lean on your community, here and at home, and know that you are being cared for in unseen ways. Reach out if you feel the need.

I only met Ed once, long ago in New Hampshire, and was impressed by his voice, his humor, and his kindness. My heart is with you now.

WOW! Well, I was off mudcat for awhile and came back to the de-clutter thread to see what folks were doing. Seemed normal until... Good heavens! There you are - methodically disposing of "Edmond's" everything! Scrolled backwards to no avail. So I pmed SRS. What a shock to the system - yours! And on Thanksgiving weekend - always a reminder. I do hope you are grieving well, in your own fashion. You have a terrific support group on MC and, others as well, I would guess. At this Covid time, everything is more difficult. But you seem to be moving forward in an extraordinarily healthy manner. You are in my thoughts as well. When all has been done that must be done and you are alone with your de-cluttered home, I trust you will reach out to people. Take care! Dorothy

Oh, Dorothy — thanks for the post. I’m a long way from disposing of Edmund’s “everything”! So far, just clothing, which I can’t use and others can.

When my mother died, my Dad waited way too long to deal with her personal things, and the job just got more and more daunting until he summoned me home from university because he could not face it alone. I don’t have anyone to summon, and putting off the job will just make it worse.
