21 Oct 20 - 02:53 PM (#4076330) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: GUEST I remember a 'Boxer' parody that went.. I am a folksinger, and an artist by my trade, And I massacre folk-music, with a yard of German plywood and a capo. I do requests. Just the one that's got two chords in and I disregard the rest (With Bert Weedon's help, one day I'll be the best!) Lie lie chorus..... Seeking twenty plus expenses, I go looking for a gig -But I get no offers, just a come-on from a groupie at the (local) club I do declare there were times I felt so lonely, I took some comfort there Lie Lie..... In 'Sir Patrick Spens I clean forgot the forty-second verse So I sang the twenty seventh, out of turn and in reverse And no-one noticed!!! I laughed for hours! The tears ran down my trouser leg! I thought I'd wet my drawers. I've sung the folk tradition with my finger in my ear 'Cos half the tripe I'm singing, I can't a-bear to hear It's a load of cobblers! Hour after hour To the rhythm of an out of tune one string thatched guitar I've sung my songs for money, and sometimes I've been paid And I carry a reminder of every gig I've played Like last Friday. At the Irish Club. I fled in mortal fear. With the imprint of a Guinness bottle stamped upon my ear (If you don't sing The Dubliners, You're queer.) Well, I've got myself together, man, I'm really freaking out smoking Cannabis (St Bruno.) Drinking pints of stout, and having hang-ups. I'm like the rest! I've had trouble with my sex-life since I fell and sprained my wrist. (And my other songs are twice as bad as this!) No idea who wrote it, but it was obviously in the British Isles, and aimed at enthusiasts like me. Does anyone have any more verses? |
21 Oct 20 - 03:16 PM (#4076333) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: GUEST,Bob the Shantyman I believe that the original was written by Fred wedlock. Some differences: Vs 2: "I do declare, I was feeling rather randy so I had her then and there" Vs 6: " ... smoking black Old Holborn resin, main-lining on draught stout . . ." Scotts group The McCalmans did a brilliant version "live". |

21 Oct 20 - 04:43 PM (#4076343) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: Jeri There are a couple of threads here. One is The Folksinger, and yes, it's from Fred Wedlock. |
21 Oct 20 - 04:46 PM (#4076344) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: Jeri And the only thing I know for sure is that Fred Wedlock sang it. Not sure if he was the one who wrote it. Someone mentioned Miles Wooten. I don't know. |
21 Oct 20 - 04:57 PM (#4076348) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: Joe Offer I wonder if Paul Simon had any idea that his song would be the basis of so many great parodies. I love the original, but I like all the parodies, too. I sang one in the 1990s about Governor Pete Wilson on the steps of the California State Capitol. Biggest audience I ever sang to. -Joe- |
21 Oct 20 - 06:39 PM (#4076362) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: Tattie Bogle Yes, I have heard the Fred Wedlock (Miles Wootton?)version a few times and always made me laugh. Now we in the UK need a Boris Johnson parody too! The "Lie lie lie" sits comfortably with that! |
22 Oct 20 - 04:39 AM (#4076415) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: GUEST,Jerry Yes, it was written by Miles Wooten, who was active in the Brighton area in the 70s, and who came up with lots of good parodies, several of which were used by Fred Wedlock over the years. I think he also wrote: Early one evening just as the pubs were opening..... |
24 Oct 20 - 09:19 AM (#4076667) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: Donuel Outside of parody I have found that in medely Simon's America follows The Boxer very well, wedding 3 seperate melodys nicely. |
25 Oct 20 - 06:58 AM (#4076745) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: GUEST Fred Wedlock has/had a bit of a reputation for pinching songs & claiming them as his own- ask Ed Pickford, who had to go to some lengths to disprove such a claim. So be careful! |
25 Oct 20 - 07:01 AM (#4076746) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: GUEST the song in question was 'The Oldest Swinger in Town' |
26 Oct 20 - 03:54 AM (#4076874) Subject: RE: The Boxer timely parody From: Dave the Gnome I did one verse for a Boris one, Tattie, but as we are not allowed to make UK political comment outside the UK politics thread I put it on there. |
