I can't even find any Keywords on the Search Site here https://digital.nls.uk/catalogues/scottish-song-index/search/ The problem is that it might have been words by someone who worked at Glenmore Lodge if that where Grandad learnt it and could have been very local words put to the music of another different tune. |

02 Nov 20 - 05:06 PM (#4077925) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: GUEST,guest Hi, I was messaged the same earlier today with more lyrics. Fairly sure the lyrics perfectly fit the tune of the Portree Kid by the Corries. The lyrics I was sent had the whole "heedie ho hum" part at the end of the verse. I think the song is actually very old and predates the Corries. Hope that helps. |

03 Nov 20 - 09:34 AM (#4078051) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: GUEST,Maureen I have been also trying to find this song and I am really struggling. Apparently called Old Glenmore, suggested it is sung to the tune of the Portree Kid , as sung by the Corries, which is a great ,funny wee song. Any other information welcome. It was requested by one of our music group Singaloud and normally someone would know it but not this time! |
03 Nov 20 - 10:12 AM (#4078059) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: GUEST,Nathan, Edinburgh I believe this is from the Corries. Very ‘their style’ They done a lot of covers / parodies of Flower of Scotland. This fits the tune if you sing along with these lyrics. Unfortunately I cannot find any videos. Not all of their stuff was recorded. |

03 Nov 20 - 05:35 PM (#4078119) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: Joe Offer So, what I get from the link above is the following verse repeated six times. Can't say I've ever heard a "folk song" like that:
And on to Aviemore The hills and aw there splendour Would set my heart a glow You’ll make the open highway And head for old Glenmore And I take it that one verse translates to: From Perth up to Dalwhinnie And on to Aviemore The hills and oh, their splendour Would set my heart aglow You’ll make the open highway And head for old Glenmore Don't know if the place names are correct. -Joe- |
03 Nov 20 - 05:58 PM (#4078120) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: Reinhard The place names seem to be correct. And the single malt whisky from the Dalwhinnie distillery is excellent ;-) |
03 Nov 20 - 07:24 PM (#4078128) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: Gallus Moll I think the whole of Scotland and the world has received this facebook request!! Canny believe how wide spread it has become... The original request was for the tune and any possible other verses so the song could be sung or a recording played at he funeral of the requester's granny, who passed away on Friday. I think the grandfather had learned the song when on a school trip / expedition to Glen More (possibly Glenmore Lodge?) in the 1950s (which would predate The Corries / Portree Kid?) I suspect it may have been a very local song, perhaps one made up for the end of the week ceilidh (at Glenmore Lodge?) and set to an existing tune? The verse seems to fit the Lights of Lochindaal tune, tho the chorus would need a couple of additional heedams? |
04 Nov 20 - 06:05 AM (#4078182) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: GUEST,maureen Singaloud I have a few more lines to this song, still don't have a tune or singer yet, proving to be very difficult. From Perth to Dalwhinnie and on to Aviemore the hills and awe their slender will set my heart aglow you'll make the open highway and head for old Glenmore where you are always sure to find an ever open door. hadum hum. hadum hum had a haddie hum and had a haddie heedum dum dum Sometimes when I am weary and sometimes when I am sad at such times I pack my bag and on my wooden plaid the snow capped hills before me and the city lints behind another mountain top to climb another path to find. this all I have folks if that helps. |
04 Nov 20 - 06:09 AM (#4078183) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: GUEST Joe Offer - nope. "And I take it that one verse translates to: From Perth up to Dalwhinnie And on to Aviemore The hills and oh, their splendour" Correctly it's: The hills and all their splendour |
04 Nov 20 - 06:10 AM (#4078184) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: GUEST,Maureen Singaloud sorry I made a mistake it is should be The snow capped hills before me and the city LIGHTS behind, not lints, apologies. |
04 Nov 20 - 08:02 AM (#4078192) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old glenmore From: GUEST,Angela Hi my brother who lives in Glasgow plays a big part in Celtic Connections every year. He has been able to reach out far and wide to help you without any luck with regard to who wrote this song or with any known recording. I’ve also contacted friends in The Borders and Aberdeen. Generally speaking people thought it the sort of song Kenneth McKellar would sing but couldn’t find confirmation of this. |
