08 Nov 20 - 12:39 PM (#4078777) Subject: Obit: Jim Irvine, Liverpool, died 7 Nov 2020 From: Matthew Edwards I am really sad to pass on the news that Jim Irvine died yesterday, aged 71, in Fazakerley hospital in Liverpool after a short illness. Jim was a stalwart at many sessions in Liverpool and further afield in Edinburgh, the Newcastleton Traditional Music Weekend, the Sun Inn in Dent, Monaive and many other places. He had a great store of songs and tunes, and he was always great company. I have sung with him in a few pubs in Liverpool; in the Lion, the Belvedere, the Baltic Fleet, and at the White Star where he played every Wednesday afternoon with the famous Button Street Badger Band. Jim occasionally posted to Mudcat as Jim I, usually as a guest, and his posts show a wide range of interests and a great knowledge of songs and their histories. His Scottish and Irish family background is very much reflected in his posts, and one great source of pride was a family connection to George Scroggie, the author of 'Tarwathie'. My condolences to Jim's wife, Kath, and their son, Richard, and to all Jim's family. He will be greatly missed, and I am very sad to lose a good friend. One day when it is safe to do so we will all gather to sing a few songs in his memory. Rest in peace, Jim. |

He was an amazing man with such a wide knowledge of many things. He had a massive song collection knowing all of them! He played folk music from a young age. Our whole family is musical playing many different interests and/or singing. He had been an archaeologist which he loved. But whenever he was or worked, music was at his core. Again thank you for posting this. It means a lot to all the family xxxx |

I last saw him over the summer when he sang at the singarounds I was running in a beer garden in Southport. He was in good form, which is why I'm shocked that we've lost him so soon afterwards. Good company, a great singer with a wide repertoire, and a good friend. My condolences to all his family. |

He was a good personal friend who had a great love of traditional music and a large store of songs. I played with him in the Extra Stout Band from when he joined in 1994 until the band finished in 2009. We played many Caelis, barn dances, concerts and backing events. He was a pleasure to play music with as he had a fine natural understanding of how to lift and bring out the best in a tune with his guitar backing. Jim, of course , continued to play and sing in different venues and with the Button Street Badger Band but I also continued to play music with him at his home. He also seemed to devour books and had a store of historical knowledge particularly of Ancient History. He will be greatly missed. |
