From: rich-joy I don’t mean songs that just mention dogs or horses – there’re squillions of them – but I’m after ones that mention Particular animals, or breeds. e.g. we have Stewball (aka Skewball) the racehorse / The Tennessee Stud / The Strawberry Roan! / Dido, Bendigo and all their noisy little kennel mates / Old Blue (you good dog you) / and that champion greyhound Master McGrath - and who could forget Old Shep?? BUT what about any Aussie / Kiwi songs that feature horses or dogs?? [NB please do NOT suggest Bogle’s “Little Gomez” ……………:)] I can think of Johnny Greenwood’s “The Goondiwindi Grey” (The GUNSYND Song), written by Nev Hauritz & Brian Wallace. And YT has Billy Starlight singing “THE RED MORNING SUN” (or is that more about a Jockey??), plus there’s Ted Egan’s “BLACK CAVIAR”, and also Kevin Shegog singing “PHARLAP, The Red Terror”. There are a few Pharlap numbers out there, I think, though none really in the Folk genre, of course. So there’s the odd Horse song around, but they’re not really that well-known in Folk circles. But what about songs that extol the famous superbreed canines like Kelpies / Blue Heelers aka Cattle Dogs / Kangaroo Dogs / even Dingos! Where are the songs celebrating “Hall’s Heelers” and “Timmin’s Biters”? Y’see, I’m reading Guy Hull’s excellent book from 2018 (and which I have only just heard of!) : “The Dogs That Made Australia : Hunter, Worker, Legend. The Untold Story of the Dog’s Role in Building Our Nation” Has a fair whack of Oz History included, but it is not written in Academize! It is both interesting and informative, but also entertaining - and FWIW, I can highly recommend it!! Meanwhile, any more Down Under canine/equine song suggestions?? R-J |

From: Sandra in Sydney well, you didn't forbid Bernard Bolan's ferdinand There is also a traditional song/poem about the Dog's meeting but that's a bit rude (anyone who wants to know why can look for Warren Fahey's recitation/song) but I'm not aware of any specific dog songs in the traditional songs I've been looking at recently. Searching my holdings for 'Dingos' brings up the duo Dingos Breakfast & I won't try to search for "dog" as I've hundreds of photos from my folk club. I'll ask some singers. I've just thought of another one - the farmer who gets a bride following advice from his dog - bride & dog talk too much so he leaves them! sandra |

But the subject of this song, about hunting colonial kangaroo in NSW with one's trusty LURCHER, is well covered in Guy Hull's book that I was excited about in the OP. It is perhaps fortunate that the Lurchers and their co-hounds (later "Kangaroo Dogs" being Greyhound/Scottish Deerhound cross) saved the colony from starvation and provided much-need hide and bindings, but by doing so they decimated that foodsource and usage for both Indigenous peoples and Dingos (and it was much worse in Tasmania). Jack, I posted a link to Phil Garland's musical tribute to the poetry of Joe Charles on the Australia thread [13 December 08-51]. I believe it contains the poem/song that you are looking for. The final line has 'honoured', not 'pardoned'. I didn't transcribe the piece as I had already posted a couple of McKenzie songs. However, he probably wasn't known by the gaelic spelling. The 2 turn of the century newspaper articles linked by the NZ folk song site refer to him as 'MacKenzie'. A page that I have since come across on the Net has this: James Mckenzie (or in his native Scottish Gaelic: Seumas MacCoinneach), possibly born in Ross-shire, Scotland, in 1820 was an outlaw who has become one of New Zealand's most enduring folk heroes. The correct spelling of Mckenzie is unclear and he is variously referred to as James, John or Jock. From: Mr Red I once came across references to "Paddy the Wanderer" who wandered the docks in Wellington looking for a young girl of the family who owned him. She had died. He was famous locally during the 1930s. I went digging, even met the mother of the girl and finally got the story that had eluded the media since because the father had deserted and the mother was grieving and refused to talk. (imagine the media honouring a grieving mother's wishes today?) Anyway, I had too much material and felt that a Folk hero deserved more than lyrics.
