Songs about Aussie/Kiwi dogs or horses?

Subject: Songs about Aussie/Kiwi dogs or horses?
From: rich-joy

I don’t mean songs that just mention dogs or horses – there’re squillions of them – but I’m after ones that mention Particular animals, or breeds.

e.g. we have Stewball (aka Skewball) the racehorse / The Tennessee Stud / The Strawberry Roan! / Dido, Bendigo and all their noisy little kennel mates / Old Blue (you good dog you) / and that champion greyhound Master McGrath -
and who could forget Old Shep??

BUT what about any Aussie / Kiwi songs that feature horses or dogs??   [NB please do NOT suggest Bogle’s “Little Gomez” ……………:)]

I can think of Johnny Greenwood’s “The Goondiwindi Grey” (The GUNSYND Song), written by Nev Hauritz & Brian Wallace. And YT has Billy Starlight singing “THE RED MORNING SUN” (or is that more about a Jockey??), plus there’s Ted Egan’s “BLACK CAVIAR”, and also Kevin Shegog singing “PHARLAP, The Red Terror”.   There are a few Pharlap numbers out there, I think, though none really in the Folk genre, of course.
So there’s the odd Horse song around, but they’re not really that well-known in Folk circles.

But what about songs that extol the famous superbreed canines like Kelpies / Blue Heelers aka Cattle Dogs / Kangaroo Dogs / even Dingos! Where are the songs celebrating “Hall’s Heelers” and “Timmin’s Biters”?

Y’see, I’m reading Guy Hull’s excellent book from 2018 (and which I have only just heard of!) :

The Dogs That Made Australia : Hunter, Worker, Legend. The Untold Story of the Dog’s Role in Building Our Nation

Has a fair whack of Oz History included, but it is not written in Academize! It is both interesting and informative, but also entertaining - and FWIW, I can highly recommend it!!

Meanwhile, any more Down Under canine/equine song suggestions??

well, you didn't forbid Bernard Bolan's ferdinand

There is also a traditional song/poem about the Dog's meeting but that's a bit rude (anyone who wants to know why can look for Warren Fahey's recitation/song) but I'm not aware of any specific dog songs in the traditional songs I've been looking at recently. Searching my holdings for 'Dingos' brings up the duo Dingos Breakfast & I won't try to search for "dog" as I've hundreds of photos from my folk club.

I'll ask some singers.

I've just thought of another one - the farmer who gets a bride following advice from his dog - bride & dog talk too much so he leaves them!

Henry Lawson - Down the river - lyrics & audio

I’VE done with joys an’ misery,
An’ why should I repine?
There’s no one knows the past but me
An’ that ol’ dog o’ mine.
We camp an’ walk an’ camp an’ walk,
An’ find it fairly good;
He can do anything but talk,
An’ he wouldn’t if he could.

We sits an’ thinks beside the fire,
With all the stars a-shine,
An’ no one knows our thoughts but me
An’ that there dog o’ mine.
We has our Johnny-cake an’ “scrag,”
An’ finds ’em fairly good;
He can do anything but talk,
An’ he wouldn’t if he could.

He gets a ’possum now an’ then,
I cooks it on the fire;
He has his water, me my tea—
What more could we desire?
He gets a rabbit when he likes,
We finds it pretty good;
He can do anything but talk,
An’ he wouldn’t if he could.

I has me smoke, he has his rest,
When sunset’s gettin’ dim;
An’ if I do get drunk at times,
It’s all the same to him.
So long’s he’s got me swag to mind,
He thinks that times is good;
He can do anything but talk,
An’ he wouldn’t if he could.

He gets his tucker from the cook,
For cook is good to him,
An’ when I sobers up a bit,
He goes an’ has a swim.
He likes the rivers where I fish,
An’ all the world is good;
He can do anything but talk,
An’ he wouldn’t if he could.

Dog's Meeting / Canine Catastrophe (unknown origins) was posted yesterday? in the Mudcat Australia-NZ Songs thread!

The bride&dog number sounds interesting!

Though I was still more after songs about Particular Dogs (or Horses), or Particular Breeds/Types in Down Under lands.....
(even though you shouldn't be able to ever "go wrong" with Lawson, LoL :)

OK, so here am I appearing to break my own "rules" for this thread, LoL!

But the subject of this song, about hunting colonial kangaroo in NSW with one's trusty LURCHER, is well covered in Guy Hull's book that I was excited about in the OP.
It is perhaps fortunate that the Lurchers and their co-hounds (later "Kangaroo Dogs" being Greyhound/Scottish Deerhound cross) saved the colony from starvation and provided much-need hide and bindings, but by doing so they decimated that foodsource and usage for both Indigenous peoples and Dingos (and it was much worse in Tasmania).

If you have even a modicum of interest in the subject, you are encouraged to read the book!! :)

When Sol has commenc'd his diurnal career,
And the bright spangled dew drops from buds disappear,
With my dog and my gun to the forest I fly,
Where in stately confusion rich gums sweep the sky.
Then anxious, my eyes each direction pursue,
Till the fleet footed WALLABA rises to view!

I point to the Game, and uplifting my hand,
Brisk Lurcher, obedient, flies off to command:---
Perceiving her danger, Puss doubles her pace,
And well prim'd and loaded, I bring up the chace,
Exclaiming, transported the course to review,
"Hoick ! hoick ! my bold Lurcher! Well led Kanguroo!

Fatigu'd, broken hearted, tears gush from her eyes:
In vain to the thicket for shelter she flies:
Secure for a moment---yet shouts rend her ears,
And the brush fired round her, again she appears.
Delighted the Victim once more to behold,
Away scampers Lurcher---and gets a firm hold.

In vain has she doubled, since now she must yield:
A stream from her haunches empurples the field:
My transports subside---gentle Pity takes place,
And Death puts an end to the joys of the Chace.
Then varied my toil, to my cottage I come,
And a sweet smiling Welcome proclaims me at home!

Don Spencer's Bob the Kelpie.

There's a medley of horse songs on John Warner's CD, The Sea and the Soil: Horses of the World/The Race/Farrier's Trade/Horses of the World (reprise). Walters & Warner, Pithead in the Fern, has The Boiler and the Horse, and Blossom, the Mining Horse.

I hadn't seen the pictures before. There is a Mudcat thread about it.

Of course no individual dog is named. Are there songs that give names to individual hydartid worms?

That Dunsandel ditty covers quite a tale, Jack! (I remember one used to see areas in WA's south west labelled "Hydatid Testing Area", but never really knew the how and why of it all. Yuk!)

I'll try to post the Kelpie lyrics this weekend ....

Alan Scott sang a version of the "talking Dog" that had the main character driving the sulky to the local hall rather than the more contemporary ute. One of my sons was quite taken with this song when he was about 8 and so we sang it a lot in our family band.

r-j, I don't think we've been video-ed singing 'Bob the kelpie', or indeed any other song.....been photographed, but no sound. One of our members sang it to her little grandkid; we thought it was a fun song so added it to our repertoire.

No other animal songs that I can think of off-hand.....

https://thegoodwills.bandcamp.com/track/buddys-gone-to-conondale

There is also a country song called "Old Draft Horse" by Shane Warren, but my sister also recalls a song about Draught Horses from a Brisbane? songwriter, which she heard some years back at a folk club .....

Anyone?

Subject: Lyr Add: IN THE DROVING DAYS (Banjo Paterson)
From: Charley Noble

Mike Kennedy adapted two Aussie poems for singing:

"In The Droving Days" by Banjo Paterson

“Only a pound” said the auctioneer,
“Only a pound as I’m standing here
Selling this animal gain or loss–
Only a pound for the drover’s horse!
One of the sort that was ne’re afraid
One of the boys of the Old Brigade,
Thoroughly honest and game, I swear,
Only the little worse for wear.

Plenty as bad to be seen in town,
Give me a bid and I’ll knock him down;
Sold as he stands, and without recourse
Give me a bid for the drover’s horse.”

Loitering there in an aimless way
Somehow I noticed the poor old gray,
Weary and battered and screwed, of course,
That’s when I noticed the old gray horse,

The rough bush saddle, and single rein,
Of the bridle laid on his tangled mane,
Straight way the crowd and the auctioneer
Seemed in the moment to disappear,

Melt away in a kind of haze–
For my heart went back to the droving days.

Back to the road, and I crossed again
Over the miles of the saltbush plain
The shining plain that is said to be
The dried up bed of an inland sea.

Where the air’s so dry and clean and bright
Refracts the sun with a wondrous light,
And out of that dim horizon makes
The deep blue glean of the phantom lakes.

At the dawn of the day we could feel the breeze
That stirred the boughs of the sleeping trees,
And brought a breath of a fragrance rare
That comes and goes in that scented air,

For the trees and the grass and shrubs contain
The dry sweet scent of the saltbush plain.
For those that love it and understand
The saltbush plain is a wonderland
A wondrous country where nature’s ways
Were revealed to me in the droving days.

Where we kept our watch in the cold and damp,
If the cattle broke from the sleeping camp.
Over the flats and across the plain,
With my head bent down over his waving mane

Through the boughs above and the stumps below,
On the darkest night I could let him go
At a racing speed: he would choose his course
And my life was safe with the old gray horse.

“Only a pound!” and was this the end
Only a pound for the drover’s friend
The drover’s friend that had seen his day,
And now was worthless and cast away.

With a broken knee and a broken heart
To be flogged and starved in a hawker’s cart;
Well, I made a bid for a sense of shame
And the memories of the good old game.

“Thank you, a guinea and cheap at that.
Against you there in the curly hat.
Only a guinea, and one more chance,
Down he goes if there’s no advance,

Third, and last time, one, two, three!”
And the old gray horse was knocked to me
And now he wanders, fat and sleek,
On the lucerna flats by the Homestead Creek,
I dare not ride him for fear he’ll fall,
But he does a journey to beat them all,
For though he scarcely a trot can raise,
He takes me back to the droving days.

And "The Cattle Dog's Death" by Henry Lawson

The Plains lay bare on the homeward route,
And the march was heavy on man and brute;
For the Spirit of Drought was on all the land,
And the white heat danced on the glowing sand.
The best of our cattle-dogs lagged at last,
His strength gave out as the plains were passed;
And our hearts grew sad as he crept and laid,
His languid limbs in the nearest shade.

He’d saved our lives in the years gone by,
-When no one dreamed of the danger nigh;
And the treacherous blacks in the darkness crept,
On the silent camp where the drovers slept.
“The dog is dying,” the stockman said,
As he knelt and lifted the shaggy head;
“Tis a long day’s march ere the run is near,
‘And he’s dying fast; shall we leave him here.

But the Super cried, "There’s an answer there!”
And he raised a tuft of the dog’s grey hair;
And, strangely vivid, each man decried
The old spear-mark on the shaggy hide.
We laid a “bluey”- and coat across,
The camping pack of the lightest horse;
And though we parched in the heat that fags,
We gave him the last of our water-bags.

The Super’s daughter we knew would chide
If we left the dog on the desert wide;
So we brought him far o’er the burning sand
For a parting stroke of her small white hand.
But long ere the station was seen ahead,
His pain was o’er, the dog was dead
And the folks all knew by our look of gloom
‘Twas a comrade’s corpse we carried home.

Cheerily,
Charlie Ipcar (formerly known as Charley Noble)

Thanks, John MacKenzie and Richard Mellish - "Nine Miles From Gundagai" (with various links) was recently posted over in the Rise Up Singing Australia thread.

And John, I believe it was Wallis & Matilda who sang "The Man From Snowy River" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-MzfmPo5j4
although I think their "Clancy of the Overflow" was better known (well, it was shorter and so much better for radio broadcasting!!!) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB6K85PuQ_M

Gerry, I have just posted Eric's "As If He Knows" + notes, over in that same thread.
And thanks for the "Three Kids on a Horse" link - lovely (rather commonplace) time in history, now long gone :(

I believe there is a song called "Black Cattle Dog" by the late Mark Gillett from NZ-Qld, but like most of his output, it is still tied up in a few cassette recordings - somewhere!!

Noel Gardner of Qld will likely place his song called (I THINK!) "Bringing the Brumbies Home" on his next CD, sometime next year.

From: Stewie

R-J, unfortunately I don't have Roly's song. Jeff Corfield might have it.

Jack, I posted a link to Phil Garland's musical tribute to the poetry of Joe Charles on the Australia thread [13 December 08-51]. I believe it contains the poem/song that you are looking for. The final line has 'honoured', not 'pardoned'. I didn't transcribe the piece as I had already posted a couple of McKenzie songs. However, given your difficulty with the Australia thread, I have taken the trouble to transcribe it for you. Here is the link to the audio:

Youtube clip

Here is my transcription. Corrections welcomed. I think it's fairly accurate. The only bit I am not sure of is the opening words. I put 'pull up your chair', but that may be incorrect. I don't have the album - I assumed the words are by Charles and the tune by Garland.

McKENZIE AND HIS DOG
(J. Charles/P. Garland)

Pull up your chair and pour out a beer
While I sing a song of a Scots mountaineer
They were hard times, hard times I fear
Very hard times for a Scots pioneer

His beard was so long it blew out in the breeze
And the soles of his feet were like billygoats’ knees
For he didn’t wear boots though the weather was cruel
And he lived his whole life on cold mutton and gruel

They were hard times, hard times I fear
And as hard as the times was this tough mountaineer

He caught a wild bull, it was big as a bus
And he tamed it, I’m told, without any fuss
It stood sixteen hands and its back was as wide
To carry two bales of wool and the Scotsman besides

They were hard times, hard times you’ll agree
Hard times for a Scotsman to save a bawbee

He had a sheepdog, a beaut one I’m told
Worth three times its weight in whisky and gold
He was half dingo with collie dog crossed
And he learned to find sheep that no one had lost

They were hard times, hard times you’ll agree
Very hard times for the dog, you’ll see

Now our Scottish friend was exceedingly tough
For he rode his wild bull from Fairwell to Bluff
Seeking a run with plenty of feed
But he had a plan for the sheep he would need

They were hard times, hard times indeed
But he had a plan for the sheep he would need

So pour me a beer and I’ll give you the gen
It was like taking worms from a deaf and blind hare
While Mac plied the cockies with whisky and talk
His wily wee dog took their sheep for a walk

They were hard times, hard times I fear
And Mac he did time for just half a year

But it was hard times, I’ll know you’ll agree
They named the whole plain MacKenzie Country
Yes, they named that whole country of mountain and fog
They honoured the man, but they shot his poor dog

As Phil Garland pointed out in another context, MacKenzie Country is wrongly spelled. His name was McKenzie.

Mhic Coinneach was illiterate in both English and his native language. There is no right way to spell his name.

Fair comment, Jack, I shouldn't have just accepted Garland's comment. However, he probably wasn't known by the gaelic spelling. The 2 turn of the century newspaper articles linked by the NZ folk song site refer to him as 'MacKenzie'. A page that I have since come across on the Net has this:

James Mckenzie (or in his native Scottish Gaelic: Seumas MacCoinneach), possibly born in Ross-shire, Scotland, in 1820 was an outlaw who has become one of New Zealand's most enduring folk heroes. The correct spelling of Mckenzie is unclear and he is variously referred to as James, John or Jock. His surname has been spelt as both 'MacKenzie' and 'McKenzie' – the latter being more commonly used. He may also have had at least one alias, John Douglass.

The full article gives a summary of the legend:

I once came across references to "Paddy the Wanderer" who wandered the docks in Wellington looking for a young girl of the family who owned him. She had died. He was famous locally during the 1930s.

I went digging, even met the mother of the girl and finally got the story that had eluded the media since because the father had deserted and the mother was grieving and refused to talk. (imagine the media honouring a grieving mother's wishes today?)

Anyway, I had too much material and felt that a Folk hero deserved more than lyrics. So I produced a booklet and self-published ISBN 0-473-00622-7. All my research items and data were left with the Alexader Turnbull Library but I can email a PDF of the thing if you contactme
