There's a nicely restored scene from the 1939 movie Tevye on YouTube.
The entire 1939 film is available, but it's not a good restoration:
Also a 1959 TV show titled The World of Sholom Aleichem:

One interested in 20th century Yiddish Lit should check out the works of Sholem Asch. He wrote one book (it may have been The Precipice 1937 about the increasingly tense economic situation building up in post WW1 Germany. The book had an unlikely upbeat ending, since it was written in the mid 30s and predicted that the dire German economic situation would be alleviated by American money and people would cool off. It included a scene of Hitler orating to a crowd of Germans without mentioning his name (I'm going by old memories here, feel free to correct).

Asch also wrote in Yiddish about Mary and Jesus. The books were called "Miriam" and "The Nazarene." He was interested more in understanding the Christian story than in conversion, which makes his work more interesting to me. They were written in a spirit of sympathy.

There is a wealth of material available.

I heard a song today, Glik (luck or happiness) Music by Alex Olshanetsky, lyrics by Bella Meisel, from a musical, "Der Letster Tants" (the last dance). It's on an album "Bay Mir Bistu Sheyn", Great Songs of the Yiddish Stage, vol. 2. So there must be a volume 1 as well. The recording was issued by the Milliken Archive.

Der Letster Tants was "produced initially at the Prospect Theater in the Bronx in 1930—the first major production for any Bronx theater."

This recording of Glik has lyrics on screen - in Yiddish, transliteration and translation to English.

The earlier link to the 1939 film Tevye is dead.

A better copy was recently posted here:

Tevye 1939 - YouTube

The first reel is a little out of focus, but the rest seems quite good.

Since the other posted film was pulled for copyright reasons, I'd watch this one ASAP before someone pulls the plug on it.

I see that The Jewish Soul: Classics of Yiddish Cinema (Blu-ray) - Kino Lorber Home Video has been discounted - it's now under $30, and even cheaper at Amazon. I gave into (or is that "gave in to") temptation, and bought a copy at amazon.mudcat.org.

After watching 10 movies, my Yiddish should improve vastly. I was pleasantly surprised that I could understand what people were saying when I was walking the streets of the Yiddish-speaking part of Jerusalem.

Yidl Mitn Fidl. Available on DVD. Made in Poland in the late 1930s. Cheerful story, pleasant songs. But one keeps wanting them to get the hell out.
