Folklore: another modern proverb

Not long ago, we had a thread going on modern proverbs. I can't find the thread now, so I'm putting a modern proverb here.

I was reading a true-crime book, about a man who hired a loser to kill his wife. According to the author, the police have a proverb for crimes like this:

"Look at the in-laws before you start searching for outlaws."

Like most modern proverbs, it's pithy, it conveys wisdom, and it has a play on words. I like it.

It all depends what is modern.

Grannie always maintained "It always sometimes never happens what's least expected most"

This thread, leeneia.

Just put 'proverb' in the filter box and roll the date back a bit.

I tried that.

Mods, if you would like to merge this thread with that thread, it would be fine with me.

GG, thanks for the two new proverbs.

Many a true jest spoken in words.
