BS: Let 46 be your lucky number, yanks!

Joe Biden doesn't do my kind of politics, but well done America for today. It was a positive day with positive messages, and I'd like to think that you've recoiled against the scourge of brainless populism, setting an example to other countries tempted to embrace it. I'm not even going to mention the tribulations you have to come, and even less am I going to mention... Let's just say I'm emulating Joe in that particular non-mention.

Bet we can't have a whole thread that does the same non-mention!

And Joe's coming to Cornwall next June. Grand!

Today feels like a holiday, as a 300-pound weight has lifted from our collective psyche. It was dead weight. Did you see how during the walk to the White House Biden scooted over to the sides a few times to greet friends, to say hello to the press? And everyone wants to say hello to Al Roker. :)

Or '45'.
I never could get my head around the idea that Trump was the 45th president. There were only 43 before him. But as Cleveland had two non-consecutive terms he gets counted twice.
Biden has just been sworn in for the 46th presidency. But surely he is only the 45th president.

There again US spelling is different, why not counting as well?

We (all the We's I know, anyway) are somewhere between giddy and exhausted. SRS said it just fine.
I keep switching TV channels looking for more stuff to make it all seem more real... but Biden's new press secretary made it pretty real by holding a genuine press briefing, just like the 'old' days.

Biden himself remotely swore in many many... they say thousands... of lower level appointments that did not require confirmation. Stuff is happening NOW!

Finally, as I type, they are have the promised concert. I may browse it, but I don't usually care for many of the acts, so it may be time for a long, relaxed night's sleep...
I suppose many in the UK will have had more to say before I wake and move about...
On we go!

Don't worry, Bill we're enjoying the moment just as much as you! The real politics can come later, which they assuredly will...

Not only did Biden omit mentioning HWMNBN, but we watched CNN for much of the ceremony and I had a strong impression they were trying to minimise mentioning him as well. Obviously the focus would be on Biden and Harris, but there was remarkably said about .... someone else.

My wife lived in DC for many years and attended Nixon's inauguration. There was a lot of 'compare and contrast' in our house.

Having been immersed in normalcy all day it took a long time but the little devil on my shoulder to pipe up and say "this too shall pass".
In response the angel said "this duo state reality is as normal as a quantum super state where 2 things exist at the same time".

So here I am in a Shrodinger's box and it does involve a lucky number.
One hundred numbers in fact. On one hand things are normal again and on the other hand total disruption of my routine. Having bought a lottery ticket for 3/4 of a billion dollars and then finding out someone in Maryland won it all. Then learning someone in town is a winner, the longer I wait to look at my ticket the longer I am a winner and loser at the same time.

This too shall pass.

By quack numerology rules, 46 is 4+6=10 = 1 which is lucky

47 is my magic number. Ya pick one early enough in life and it is just *amazing* how many times it comes up in your life!

The thread title wasn't exactly an original from me: the heading of the Guardian's weekly letter to its supporters, which I got yesterday (by email) was Lucky number 46.

Yeah, I don't like associating something like a President or a term to a 'lucky' number. That means we countenance unluck among the succeeding numbers purely in accounting for the order of our political leaders? Asking for trouble with no upside.

In my opinion it is unlucky to work in a building with floors that go from 12 to 14 with no 13. Means you are working in a building associated with superstitious people. Perhaps they knocked on wood while reviewing the plans. Maybe they think it was built with 'lucky' concrete.

Not a happy mix.

If Biden is the guy I hope, he will make the number lucky for us, not the other way round.

46 is 13 more than the age Jesus was when he got nailed by the Romans on Friday 13,
after he walked under a cross shaped ladder he was carrying..

13 is a really really very very unlucky number for at least 13 devout believers
in religious mysticism numerology codswallop...

.. just saying...

Biden should avoid being nailed to any crosses in any months with a 13 in it...

Apart from that, 46 might be lucky...

You should have checked at one minute and twenty-one seconds past nine, Steve. Then it would have been 21:01:21 21/01/21 :-D

Sorry - but Schordinger's binary cat has it as 10 = 2

AND............

Maybe 21 minutes past 9pm was the 21st second past the 21st minute on the 21st day of the 21st month of the 21st century.

The world has officially grown up! With the oldest ever president in charge of the USA.

We are indeed living in interesting times.

Me? personally? I'm looking for a shot in the arm.

I was once behind two women I knew walking along a corridor to a meeting. When we got to the entrance we saw the room number was 1313.

"Oh, my lucky number!" I said.
Mother turned to daughter and said: "He's not Irish!"

True Story.

Bolstered by a top notch frittada with freshly squeezed orange juice and having successfully watched Mystery Science Theatre 3000 I'm ready to check my lottery ticket since no one else has claimed the prize.
On TV right now is Carl Reiner playing a character that has just won the lottery in the movie 'summer school'. Time for another coincidence...

This is really getting bad. People are talking about time and clocks on this thread and there is an ad for wristwatches popping up on my screen. Yech!

Back to the discussion, Biden is too conservative for me, but I always respect sanity, empathy, intelligence, and competence, especially right now. His slew of executive orders fixed a lot of things that have been very broken. It's a good start. I also like that there are a lot more progressive words, concepts, and people at the top of the Democratic party than ever before, and some of it is coming out in Biden's words. Is he a savvy politician taking the most valuable stance, or is he really evolving? Time will tell. I really like it that he seems like a very good man, whether or not I agree with him on any particular issue.

Back to digression #2, I continue to be amazed at the number of people who seem to be really upset when I don't literally "knock on wood" on demand. Religion is weird.

Tee hee Friday the 13th was unlucky for the Templars, centuries after the crucifiction... And that is a pun, not a typo.

Remember the floor effect in stats?

In my experience more often that not, people "knocking on wood" tend to tap their own head.
........

Anyway, Congratulations!

There are line from a poem by Chesterton that seem apposite:
...We lived to see God break their bitter charms.
God and the good Republic come riding back in arms:
We have seen the City of Mansoul, even as it rocked, relieved--
Blessed are they who did not see, but being blind, believed.
