We knew him back in the 1970,s as a stalwart of the Liverpool Folk Scene. A brilliant musician who played banjo, guitar, melodeon etc, and was the expert voice on Liverpool shanties. Often seen on TV and heard on Radio. Sadly missed. |

He'd been missing from the local scene since having a severe stroke some time ago. By the way, Bernie's brother Rod was a member of the Quarrymen skiffle group with a couple of other musicians. I remember one time we did a melodeon duet with one melodeon. We played together off and on for 50 years or so. I shall miss him. RIP Bernie. |

I know he wouldn't want a great deal of fuss, but I can't NOT say farewell to such a pivotal part of Liverpool and districts Folk life. Apart from the inflatable seagull, the parrot on shoulder etc. I fondly recall Thursday nights in 'The Dolphin' near Canning Place when he'd sing the Guinness song which extolled the virtues of the drink, detailing the counties of Ireland whilst drinking a pint of the stuff. 'Good old Kerry' got a mention and Sligo was always drawn out as 'Sliiigoooh'at the end of a verse. Terrific musician as Keith details and a dance caller of renown. A gang of us had a grand (and wet) weekend camping, singing and playing up in Keld not that long ago. Grand memories. I don't think they make 'em like Bernie anymore. |

Bernie was a great support to us when we set up the Rosses Point (Wild Atlantic Shanty Festival) now running since 2010. He was such a lovely person with immeasurable talent, and how he loved drawing out Sliiiigooo in our home county. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. |
