15 Feb 21 - 05:25 PM (#4093316) Subject: Charlie Bate (Cornish singer) From: GUEST,BlackAcornUK Very interested to know if people are aware of releases by the Padstow singer Charlie Bate (1919-1977) - I'm very taken with his voice, having encountered a couple of tracks on Topic's The Folk Songs Of Britain Volume 9: Songs of Ceremony (1971); Sadly, it seems that there are no single, 'official' album releases, with a handful of tracks scattered across compilations and concert recordings. 16 Feb 21 - 03:18 AM (#4093340) Subject: RE: Info: Charlie Bate (Cornish singer)(1919-1977) From: GUEST,Sean O'Shea Charlie was a much loved Cornish singer whom I first met at the First Cornwall Festival in 1973.For some reason,Charlie was out of favour with the organisers at that time and they refused to book him for the festival in spite of the fact that he was one of Cornwall's best loved.Brenda Wooton,who was booked wouldn't have this and she insisted on bringing him with her and I remember there was much tension and tears. Charlie often teamed up to work with Bob Cann. |

Living in London in the mid-60s, Irish sessions were common enough, but I was intrigued when Vic Legg told me about a Cornish session. It was on a Saturday night in a 'Cornish' pub just off Knightsbridge- rugby stuff all over the walls- Redruth in particular, I think? it was, I think, after a big rugby game in London, but it was indeed a Cornish session. Lots of songs & tunes & talk of Charlie Bate -there was a performance of 'Oss 'Oss, involving moving all the pub chairs & tables! I never got to Padstow but did get to the excellent Bodmin club a few times & always remembered Mervyn when I did.... |

16 Feb 21 - 05:12 AM (#4093353) Subject: RE: Info: Charlie Bate (Cornish singer)(1919-1977) From: The Sandman it might be a good idea to contact Vic legg of Bodmin folk club, he is on facebook and would remember Charlie Bate, ormightbe contacted through the club alternatively the clog maker.. john the fish, who used to sing with Brenda Wooton. there was ALSO a guy called Lar Cann, who was also involved with Bodmin folk club at that time. Lar had a bit of a reputation for being cranky, he was alleged to have said to Peter Bond the songwriter," I will give you a gig if you sing all tradtional songs". Lar Cann has a website as an Artist. |

He was also a Melodeon player and was one of the musicians for the Obby Oss on Mayday in Padstow. I used to enjoy his party piece tune set where he told a tale about various situations he came across as he went about his day. He would be passing a Church and hear the organ playing a tune or the Boy scouts band on parade and all sorts of other situations where music would be involved.The tune he heard would always be Little brown Jug. He Would play in the style that suited the scenario making his Melodeon sound like the Church organ,or the fairground organ, or Scout band. I also used to enjoy hearing him play with Bob Cann who I also knew. Both were firmly rooted in their local traditions and culture and gave me a less academic sense of what the music of the ordinary folk was all about. |

He can heard playing with Bob Cann on a couple of tracks on Bob's CD Proper Job! (VT138CD). There are quite a few field recording on the British Library Sounds site. |

Charlie was indeed a great player of the accordian and I remember well his journey to little brown jug. I think that since Mervyn was such a loose cannon that sometimes Charlie wasn't welcomed in case he brought Mervyn with him. But personally I spent many happy hours in their company thanks to my connection to the Jolly Porter folk club in Exeter. |
