2012 Obit: Hannah Hutton (Northumbrian singer)

It is with great sorrow that I have to report the death of Hannah Hutton.
She was a beautiful traditional Northumbrian singer ,who many may have heard at both the Whitby and Sidmouth festivals. She outlived her Northumbrian piper husband Joe Hutton by 25 years.
RIP Hannah

I've just had a message from Sandra Kerr informing me of the death of Hannah Hutton, the widow of Joe Hutton the Northumbian piper and a very fine singer in her own right. We heard her sing at the number of events, mostly at Whitby Festival and the Bradfield Traditional Music weekend.
I don't think that she did much public singing whilst when Joe was alive but se seemed to come into her own later in life.
Sandra brought Hannah down to Lewes to sing for us at our folk club and I remember it as a night of warm emotion and enjoyable singing. She was good company and I particularly remember a one kind comment that she made to Tina and I.
My good wishes go out to her family, friends and admirers.

A lovely lady indeed Richard. I met her through Alison Younger when she would often stay with Alison and Chris Harvey and yes Vic, good company for sure. Plenty of laughter at the kitchen table. She wasn't one for fuss and that came through in her unaffected, down to earth singing.
A sad loss.

Could the typo in the thread title be corrected to 2021?

Will have to look her up, I'm shockingly ignorant of my own Northumbrian roots and am aware I'm probably missing out on some great singers and musicians.

Hannah's husband Joe was a shepherd in Upper Coquetdale at Rowhope. They retired to Rothbury where many may have heard Hannah sing at the annual festival. She was one of the last generation of traditional unaccompanied singers. She had learned many songs from her parents and had a huge repertoire of songs especially about her beloved Northumberland. She learned her songs by ear, usually after one hearing and then sang them with great feeling. She was a true country woman, an interesting conversationalist and a lovely person.
She will be greatly missed.
My condolences to all her family.

What I do recall from participating in the Saturday competitions and singarounds at Rothbury, Morpeth, Alnwick, etc., in the noughties, is that the female unaccompanied singers were particularly good - and I gather, from the above, that Hannah was probably among them.

Hannah did judge at Rothbury alongside Mike Tickell once. She hated judging and could not be persuaded to repeat the performance. However, she always was in the audience for the singing competitions and was very supportive of the competitors. She often sang in the big Saturday evening concert in the mart.

Vic mentioning Hannah appearing with Sandra Kerr must have been the same tour which brought them to Traditions at the Tiger, Long Eaton of which we have fond memories. Two fine, if contrasting, singers gave us a most memorable evening.Especially surprising for me as I saw Joe Hutton many times during my years in the North East but hadn't until then heard Hannah sing. RIP from TATT.
