Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of April That is : (A) Any songs with April in the title (B) Any songs with an April date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in April even if the lyrics do not actually say so.
It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them.

INDEX OF APRIL SONGS
Below is an index of the May songs listed in Alphabetical order. The titles are blue click links which will take you to the area in thread where you will be able to see most of the posts for that title. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below. Regards, GeoffLawes

April
So here we are in April, in showy, blowy April,
In frowsy, blowsy April, the rowdy dowdy time
In soppy, sloppy April, in wheezy breezy April,
In ringing, stinging April, with a singing swinging rhyme.
The smiling sun of April on the violets is focal,
The sudden showers of April seek the dandelion out;
The tender airs of April make the local yokel vocal,
And he raises rustic ditties with a most melodious shout.
So here we are in April, in tipsy gypsy April,
In showery, flowery April, the twinkly, sprinkly days;
In tingly, jingly April, in highly wily April,
In mighty, flighty April with its highty-tighty ways!
The duck is fond of April, and the clucking chickabiddy
And other barnyard creatures have a try at caroling;
There's something in the air to turn a stiddy kiddy giddy,
And even I am forced to raise my croaking voice and sing.

Sung by Arky's Toast on Maypoles to Mistletoe..

Tim Radford

NARROW BOATS TO TOW

has a verse

And as I walk the towpath on a glowing April morning,
The brasses on my harness flashing brightly in the sun,
I think about those horses who by fortune’s fickle calling
Are taken far away to pull a gun.

APRIL MAY
Lou and Peter Berryman, of Madison Wisconsin, have a song called "April May". April = name of month, and May = verb, in this instance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xC4NVcMujg

The February sun it didn't
turn the lawn to mud but April May
The warmer wind of March it didn't
bloom a single bud but April May
There are little lumps of February
down behind the bed
Winter wasn't wonderland like
everybody said
March it didn't melt away the
blizzard in my head but April May

Mr Cooney wrote 14 songs for the theatre piece - Rising Up Peterloo 2019 - seven about the events of 1819 and seven about 2019. His song about Ms McKee was among those eventually chosen and performed.

The song's lyrics include the lines: "Was early early in the spring/ All the birds did sweetly sing/ They changed their notes from tree to tree/ And they sang for Lyra McKee".

Mr Cooney said the producers behind the Peterloo show posted a video of his song about Ms McKee, sung by Lucy Farrell, Jim Molyneux and Sam Carter, on YouTube. Lyra McKee

This is a song I wrote for the April song swap of the Paint Creek Folklore Society of Rochester (near Detroit), Michigan (not sure what year it was, maybe 1996 or 97). We have a theme every month and it was "April Fool". I'd had an idea in mind for weeks without having time to sit down and try to write anything, but the drive to the meeting took about 20 minutes, so I composed it in my head as I drove there. (Don't think I'd be able to do it all in my head now, sadly!)

APRIL FOOL

© ~1997 Vikki Appleton Fielden

Come sit ye down beside me and hear my sorry tale
And if you have a mind to, you might purchase me an ale
Me heart is sick and weary and me pride is hurtin' bad
And if you listen, you will hear the time that I have had.

    Chorus:
And there's no fool like an April fool
I thought I'd learned me lessons
But now I'm back in school
And there's no fool like an April fool
So I'll just drink and sit and think
How love can be so cruel.

Now I was just a fool for love -- I guess I lost me head
But she was young and pretty and she winked at me and said
Come sit ye down beside me and we'll have a drink or two
Her charms were irresistible... what else was I to do?

Chorus

We passed a lovely evening there and when she asked me in
I knew that luck was with me (or perhaps it was the gin)...
The next thing I remember I was lyin' in the street
Without a stitch of clothing or the shoes upon me feet.

Chorus

So now, your Honour, here I stand, and now I comprehend
Not every lass who smiles at you is bound to be a friend
So if you'll take a tip from me concernin' lovin's game
Don't trust a girl who tells you, Sir, that April is her name...

For there's no fool like an April fool (etc.)

Note: Sometimes I start the chorus with "And" instead of "For", usually on verse 3.

Sorry, no link to a video, but if anyone would like an mp3 with the melody, PM me.

Tony Rose sang 'Twas on One April Morning on his 1976 LP On Banks of Green Willow. He commented in the album's sleeve notes:

The village of Cowley, near Exeter, awakens boyhood memories on three counts — it was the terminus of the old “F” bus route, my mum's favourite picnic spot, and a superb vantage point from which to behold the Great Western Railway in all its majesty!

Last year I discovered it was also where Priscilla Wyatt-Edgell collected 'Twas on One April Morning from Mr R. Bryant.

THE BALLAD OF BARNEY GRAHAM
Della Mae Graham

On April the thirtieth
Nineteen thirty-three
Upon the streets of Wilder
They shot him brave and free

They shot my darling father
He fell upon the ground
'Twas in the back they shot him
His blood came streaming down

They took the pistol handles
And beat him on the head
The hired gunmen beat him
'Til he was cold and dead

When he left home that morning
I though he'd soon return
But for my darlin' father
My heart shall ever yearn

We carried him to the graveyard
There we laid him down
To sleep in death for many a year
In the cold and sodden ground

Although he left the union
He tried so hard to build
His blood was spilled for justice
And justice guides us still

Liner notes from Hedy West, Old Times and Hard Times:

This elegy was written by teen-age Della Mae Graham for
her father, who was president of the United Mineworker's Union
local in Wilder. One Sunday morning Barney Graham was walking
along the dirt road that was Wilder's main street, and as he
passed the company store, two gun thugs shot and killed him.
The community was so tightly controlled by the mine owners
that no local preacher dared preach at the funeral of the dead
union man; instead, the oration was preached by divinity students
from Nashville. "The tune I sing here is from John Greenway' s
American Folk Songs of Protest which doesn't explain its source.
When Daddy knew Della Mae Graham, she recited this poem and had
no written tune."

The song also appears as Track 20 on Pete Seeger, American Industrial Ballads.

Recording by Hedy West.

Battle of Shiloh Hill

Come all you gallant soldiers, a story I will tell
About the bloody battle on top of Shiloh's hill
It was an awful struggle; it'll cause your heart to chill
All from the bloody battle on top of Shiloh's hill.

Was on the sixth of April about the break of day
The drums and fifes were playin' for us to march away
My feelings at that moment I do remember well
When first my feet went tramping on top of Shiloh's hill

Was about the hour of sunrise the battle it began
Before the fight was over, we fit them hand to hand
And the hollers of the battle did my heart with anguish fill
For the sick and the dying on top of Shiloh's hill

Was early the next morning we fit the fight again
Unmindful of the wounded; unuseful to the slain
The cannon smoke did hide the sun, 10,000 was the kill
And streams of blood went running on the top of Shiloh's hill

My uniform of blue was turned to a purplish red
When someone on a coming steed did strike me on the head
I sent a bullet to his heart and as he fell away
I saw the face of my father dressed in bloody gray

Although we won the battle, my heart is filled with pain
The one that brought me to this life I'll never see again
I pray to the lord consistent with his will
Lord save the souls of them poor boys that died on Shiloh's hill.

"Bedtime Story," written by Jan Harmon, recorded by Anne Dodson on From Where I Sit in 1993. Video Dodson writes: "'Bedtime Story' is actually a four-part choral piece, but since I can't carry a chorus around with me, I put the bass, tenor, and alto parts on the guitar and sing the soprano."

BEDTIME STORY
Jan Harmon

Once upon a time I caught a glimpse of April
Like a spear of sunlight on a January morning
I closed myself as petals, but the light unclosed me
There so deep in darkness

Nothing, even starlight, has such tiny fingers
Stones reach out and whisper to each other without warning
And nothing, even wisdom, is as kind as roses
Or so rare and reckless

So sleep, my dearie
'Neath the dream horse hooves
I will give you, in a wreath of leaves
Bedtime stories, wishes tossed
Like flashing pennies by lovers
.

SONGS ABOUT THE INVASION OF JOHNSON COUNTY

In April, 1892 Wyoming's "Johnson County War," a conflict between large cattle owners and less wealthy settlers, culminated in the former bringing in a small army of hired gunmen to dispose of their opponents. They succeeded in killing the opposition leader, Nate Champion, but despite support from the President of the U.S., didn't come out well from the political fallout.

See the
Traditional Ballad Index for historical info and for the songs The Blood-Stained Diary and The Invasion Song. Under the title "Ballad of Nate Champion," "The Blood-Stained Diary" was recorded by The Phoenix Arizona Rebels.

LE PORTE-ENSEIGNE , also known as "Le 25 du mois d'avril", "Le 26 du mois d'avril", "La mort du contre-maître", and other titles, is a traditional song widespread in France and Canada. It tells of a dying soldier's farewell to his sweetheart, and usually begins something like "Voici le mois d'avril arrivé..." (The month of April has come...)

From: GeoffLawes Date: 05 Oct 21 - 06:00 PM; The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, took place from April 6 to April 7, 1862, and was one of the major early engagements of the American Civil War.

From Mainly Norfolk; Martin Simpson sang Hills of Shiloh in 2019 on his Topic album Rooted. He noted: From 1977 to 1988, I worked with June Tabor. We performed a very wide selection of material including a set of songs from, or inspired by, the American Civil War. June performed Shel Silverstein's Hills of Shiloh in that set, a song which portrays a broken woman whose partner has been killed in the war, a fact that she cannot accept after 40 years. Silverstein was a great writer and illustrator of children's books and a very successful writer of songs. A Boy Named Sue, Sylvia's Mother and The Ballad of Lucy Jordan are among his best known. Mick Peat of Derby suggested that I should record the song. Thank you, Mick.

June Tabor sings THE HILLS OF SHILOH ;

Have you seen Amanda Blaine in the Hills of Shiloh?
Walking in the morning rain in the Hills of Shiloh?
Have you seen her at her door
Listening for the cannon roar
And the man who went to war from the Hills of Shiloh?

From Below

Step by step…
With a compass and a cap
For a sing-song and a scrap
Are we bound by the lines upon the map?
Hell no!
‘Cos real change comes from below

Chorus:
From below, from below
Real change comes from below

It’s a place we call our own
From stone to boundary stone
Will they take away the right to roam?
Hell no!
‘Cos real change comes from below

Chorus

For every footprint on the land
For all the banners and the banned
Should we keep to the landlord’s plans?
Hell no!
‘Cos real change comes from below

Chorus

From below, from below
Real change comes from below
Down in the soil where the ideas grow
Real change comes from below

And you can't go up there, you're disturbing the game.

Cod's roe, caviar, milk stout and champagne,
Gold cards and dole cards, but never the twain.
That's the game, that's their game.
Nothing changes, it all stays the same.

THE SEVENTEEN BRIGHT STARS

Come all you bold Britons, to the sea do belong,
Of the seventeen bright stars I will sing you a song.

    NELSON’S VICTORY AT COPENHAGEN

2 April 1801   The Battle of Copenhagen of 1801 , also known as the First Battle of Copenhagen to distinguish it from the Second Battle of Copenhagen in 1807, was a naval battle in which a British fleet fought and defeated a smaller force of the Dano-Norwegian Navy anchored near Copenhagen.

Draw near, ye gallant seamen, while I the truth unfold
Of as gallant a naval victory as ever yet was told.
The second day of April last, upon the Baltic main,
Parker, Nelson, and their brave tars fresh laurels there did gain.

19 April On this day in 1775: In Lexington, Massachusetts, the opening shot was fired – by a British general – in the United States War of Independence. This was the shot “heard around the world”.

CONCORD HYMN (original title "Hymn: Sung at the Completion of the Concord Monument, April 19, 1836") is a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson written for the 1837 dedication of an obelisk monument in Concord, Massachusetts, commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord, a series of battles and skirmishes on April 19, 1775 which sparked the American Revolutionary War.

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.

At Concord's Independence Day celebration on July 4, 1837, it was first read, then sung as a hymn by a local choir using the then-familiar tune "Old Hundredth". Wikipedia

THE DANCE OF THE CHERRY TREES recorded, and presumably written by, John Spillane.

Loveliest of Trees A. E. Housman - 1859-1936

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

The Sultana, Art Thieme. Tune: "Blue Mountain Lakes” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADW7JhfmVz0

It was April 24th of 1865.
On the Father of Waters, side-wheelers did glide.
From New Orleans to St. Louis town,
Right on her schedule, she glided on down.
Burning down, down, down. Burning down.

She landed at Memphis on April 26th,
Gave care to the wounded and care to the sick.
Some stronger soldiers unloaded her hold,
Carried out canned goods and bodies so cold.
Burning down, down, down. Burning down.

The steamboat Sultana, built for 376 passengers, was severely overcrowded at Vicksburg with over 1,953 paroled Union solder/prisoners, 22 guards from the 58th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, over 70 fare-paying cabin passengers, and 85 crew members, for a total of 2,130 people. Seven miles above Memphis, the patched boilers exploded and fire ensued. The official death count by the United States Customs Service was 1,547.

HARRY BELAFONTE SONGS
Sky News, 25 April 2023; Harry Belafonte, the singer and actor who became a civil rights activist, has died at 96. Reluctantly nicknamed "The King of Calypso", he was largely responsible for bringing Caribbean music to an international audience in the 1950s, and the first singer - in any genre - to sell a million records in a year.

Just last year, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, becoming the oldest person ever to receive the honour. Alongside his sparkling Hollywood career, he was a committed activist, working closely with Martin Luther King Jr during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

Been trying to post this for several days, so here's hoping that (a) it'll take, and (b) it hasn't been done before!

Ahem:

The one Dust Bowl Ballad that mentions the date of the great dust storm of 1935:

THE GREAT DUST STORM
(Dust Storm Disaster)

On the 14th day of April of 1935,
There struck the worst of dust storms that ever filled the sky.
You could see that dust storm comin', the cloud looked deathlike black,
And through our mighty nation, it left a dreadful track.

From Oklahoma City to the Arizona line,
Dakota and Nebraska to the lazy Rio Grande,
It fell across our city like a curtain of black rolled down,
We thought it was our judgement, we thought it was our doom.

The radio reported, we listened with alarm,
The wild and windy actions of this great mysterious storm;
From Albuquerque and Clovis, and all New Mexico,
They said it was the blackest that ever they had saw.

From old Dodge City, Kansas, the dust had rung their knell,
And a few more comrades sleeping on top of old Boot Hill.
From Denver, Colorado, they said it blew so strong,
They thought that they could hold out, but they didn't know how long.

Our relatives were huddled into their oil boom shacks,
And the children they was cryin' as it whistled through the cracks.
And the family it was crowded into their little room,
They thought the world had ended, and they thought it was their doom.

The storm took place at sundown, it lasted through the night,
When we looked out next morning, we saw a terrible sight.
We saw outside our window where wheat fields they had grown
Was now a rippling ocean of dust the wind had blown.

It covered up our fences, it covered up our barns,
It covered up our tractors in this wild and dusty storm.
We loaded our jalopies and piled our families in,
We rattled down that highway to never come back again.
