From the website:
"We hope very much to be joined by all the artists that had been booked for 2020, please see below, but this will very much depend on where we are with regard to restrictions and venues over the next few months."

I thought the spa had shut so there is a venue gone

The Spa was mothballed, wasn't it? I can't find too much detail on Google about its current status, but the venue has advertisements for events throughout 2021. I don't recall ever reading that it was closed permanently, and this report would seem to suggest that this was never an option:

https://www.whitbygazette.co.uk/arts-and-culture/theatre-and-stage/no-plan-permanent-closure-scarborough-spa-and-whitby-pavilion-says-operator-it-consults-redundancies-2906358

(For what it's worth, I think the new Pavilion is a soulless venue, and not a patch on its predecessor. The bar area in particular is like being in an airport waiting lounge.)

I was trying to confirm what could (theoretically) happen when according the government's roadmap dates yesterday.

It looked like as of 17th May large outdoor events could take place. And indoor events with attendees in clusters of 6 or two households (ie social distancing)

And then from June 21st, all restrictions lifted. So theoretically at least, all festivals post 21 June would at least be legal however they were organised.

I was looking at the London Folk Festival, which is scheduled to take place in a couple of indoor venues including Cecil Sharp House, between 18th and 20th June. Kind of annoying scheduling as if it were the following weekend it would not require any indoor social distancing measures at all.

'Course all of that is theoretical, in practice they all depend on the success of the previous stage so there could be a domino effect on the dates.

As grandma used to say "You can wish in one hand and s**t in the other. I know which will get full first"
I think, and a lot of people agree with me, that any of the "normal" events we rejoice in will be very difficult to take place this year.
There are a hell of a lot of certainties that need to be achieved before people will put their lives at risk - I see no sign of that despite Boris and his un-gallant crew and the efforts of the idiots who believe it is all a myth foisted upon us by the Chinese / Trump / Gaddaffi (he's not really dead you know - just living at the North Pole with Elvis).
We are really missing meeting up with friends and doing the normal things but its better than the alternative.
Just keep safe and well.

Here's hoping. Highlight of the year.

Last year I think there was a fringe (since holiday accommodation was open). I suspect this year with vaccination, more of us will be tempted by that option if all else fails.

Yes Mo, some (just a few though) of my 'crowd' ventured over last year and had an enjoyable time, if socially-distanced. Pubs etc. were open and spontaneous music and song broke out. We were chicken and stayed put but we have accommodation booked for this year in hopes of summat happening. Fingers crossed.

Thinking about Whitby

Just been listening to a recording of Brian Dawson (RIP) giving a presentation at Whitby on Percy Grainger collecting in North Lincolnshire in 1905

Brian was talking and singing in 2005.

The recording is 1hour 15minutes of gold dust!

We're any singarounds " organised" last year if so where were the venues. Did Cobblers Monday have their session running. We are definitely going this year got accommodation booked it would be nice to know what fringe events are on even if the main event was not. What about the folk train all wearing masks of course. Has anyone tried singing in a mask?

This press release received from the Whitby Folk Week Committee: -
WHITBY FOLK WEEK 2021: IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE DIRECTORS
In the light of the continuing pandemic and the uncertainty of restrictions such as social distancing and face coverings being fully relaxed by August, the Whitby Folk Week directors have taken the extremely difficult decision to postpone the 2021 festival until the 20th-26th August 2022.
The very essence of Whitby Folk Week is our community; being together to dance, sing, play music and be with friends and family. Ceilidhs, morris dancing, sessions, workshops, sing-arounds and bustling venues are at the heart of this, and they are simply not possible with any level of social distancing in place. Whitby Folk Week without these things would not be the Whitby Folk Week we know and love.
There are also more practical considerations such as the availability of the Spa, ever changing restrictions and the fact that any financial risk in this already unpredictable year may well jeopardise future festivals. To ensure a positive future for the festival, we must be mindful of the ongoing need to protect each other, as well as the town of Whitby, and our festival and it’s reputation.
For this year, we will contact ticket holders over the next few days and, as last year, we will host a Whitby@Home, which we hope you will support, to keep us all going until we can have the festival back to it’s old self.
Hopefully, in 2022, we will collect our heather in person, hug our friends, dance, sing and play to our hearts' content. In the meantime, we send our very best wishes for continued health and happiness to all our supporters and their loved ones.

I think any dance "event" will suffer threefold
1) people no longer with us
2) people reluctant to participate
3) a tendency to dance with one partner all night
4) a shift towards partner dances (eg French)
5) an uncertainty in numbers 😎

28 Apr 21 - 11:39 AM (#4103848)
Subject: RE: Whitby Festival - On This Year?
From: Mo the caller

Threefold = 1,2,3,4,5! Let me add 6) the fact that the committee (presumably) aren't booking any venues because they've cancelled the festival.

I do find it hard to imagine getting back to dancing again. But also hard to imagine not doing so.

We will be in Whitby for the week and providing the weather is kind will enjoy just being there during the day.
We will probably also make use of the car to re-familiarise ourselves with the delights of the area which we have missed greatly.
Evenings will be spent with friends enjoying fine food and drink and hopefully listening to some fine singing and music.

Years ago I would walk around Whitby then decide ----it and drive to Edinburgh. Little France campsite flat and ever avaiable and loads on up there. But Campsite built on years ago. Won't want a tent in the hospital AND the A68 doesn't go by anymore. Years before that we used to sing in the Elsinore. Change happens.

If it is anything like Sidmouth - the usual suspects will congregate to play and dance as best you can on tarmac or grass. One singleton carried a plaque around his neck with "Doubly vaccinated, re-flow tested, willing to dance"

The grapevine gave us socially distanced Irish Set (yes it is possible) and a ceilidhs on the front near the Bedford.

I may be wrong but I think cujimmy has confused the Fishermens Rowing Club with the Friendship Rowing Club.
The Fishermens would certainly not be big enough to allow more than twenty at the most to be sufficiently spaced.
The Friendship does have a large concert room upstairs.

Also Mr Red, Whitby does not have the number of suitable air freshened areas that Sidmouth has.
The Plough yard in the past was a good place to be and Vin Garbutt launched his professional career from there one year. Such a thing would be impossible to do these days as the pub belongs to Sam Smiths and all enjoyment is banned. Even presentations without music such as interviews, things with string, origami and shepherd's stick making were considered too racy - and as for storytelling - well???

Exactly why I normally choose Whitby over Sidmouth. Kept my B&B booking so at least this year I can do all the touristy things without thinking that I am not getting value from my season ticket.

Yes Malcomlm I did mean the Friendship Rowing club, their large upper room has been excellent over the years, and there would be plenty of room to space out. Another good venue I think would be the Rugby Club, but it would be a bit of a walk from the town centre.

The Rugby club has for many years offered a campsite for attendees at Whitby Folk Week.

They have also offered an alternative venue for folkies to folk, sing and have a good time away from the centre of the town.

As far as I am aware they still provide a very good breakfast, at a cost of course, and showers, toilet facilites etc .........and a bar!!

Glynn Rogers owns Moor & Coast catering who provide services to festivals all over the country.

He is also the chairman of the rugby club and according to the webpage they put up about the Moor & Coast Festival it was to be held in June (not May as I thought) but it was to be held at the Rugby Club as I suspected.

Yesterday saw a dedication of a Memorial Bench on the cliffs close to the Whalebones to Tony Foxworthy who died last year. The event was well attended.
Tony was responsible for organising the very first Whitby Folk Festival as it then was back in 1966.
Doc Rowe and Jill Pidd were the doers who made sure this happened and full details of the Citation and the Memorial Plaque which will be erected in the Missions to Seamen - the first major venue for the embryonic festival - will appear on Doc's website.
The crowd funding for the event is still open and has not as yet met the full costs - donation details are also available on Doc's website.
Stump up and be jolly!!!

Despite missing the sessions that Sheila Miller (bless her) daily texted me about and I missed, I did manage upstairs at Middle Earth and Mick Hayward's 1pm - 3pm sing on Friday in the Friendship Rowing Club bar. Hugely enjoyable and well Covid-mindful, masks on entry until seated, reasonably spaced etc.
All in all, we're glad we went and remain hopeful for 2022 - as long as we can afford the beer prices! (phew)

The Beer was £3.90 a pint and the singing in both areas was excellent. I ventured over to the Middle Earth and the Station too and generally enjoyed a lovely week of friendship and folk music.

Whitby has never been a place for reasonable beer prices.
Even in the days when the pubs were taking it in turns to close on a Saturday night prices were always above average for the area.
It used to be not so bad before the clubs and most of the pubs had two price lists - neither on show - for locals/members and visitors.
In the days before Humphrey at Sam Smith's the landlord at the Plough confided in me that Folk Week profits covered the whole of his outgoings for the year.
The place now has less atmosphere than a funeral parlour - but Humphrey knows best.

A further shout out to those who put together the online programme and events in Whitby@Home 2021: I still have some catching up to do, but some good concerts, workshops, talks and presentations.
The one disappointment was the very poor quality of the "Festival Showcase" video which was made up up of various collected videos of workshop output, but then presented as a Zoom recording on YouTube. A lot was lost in this mish-mash of technology. Now, pretty much all the other Zoom events were of good quality, but this whole thing was dreadful, both in sound and picture quality. Fortunately there have been been updated YouTube videos of the 2 workshops I sent in good quality videos for, and these are SOOOO much better!

Bay Horse Closed at Tunstall (village where I was brung up, then had 2x Sams pubs)   Sams ad on the door for couple to run. Dare say there's a Sam Smiths thread somewhere.
Good sing across the road in garden and gazebo's. Live, no zoom, no PA, no beer.
Bank Hol Mon 2021.

My presentation upon 'A Secret Stream' is now available. We should be ready for print this month. Sorry for the delay, with the workshop. My internet connection had other ideas.
