Lyr Add: Our Favourite Things

As promised on Monday, lyrics to Our Favourite Things.

This was written collectively by members of the Shanty Crew to pass spare time back at the accommodation at the Lancaster Maritime Festival before an evening session. I can't remember which year, but the last verse is a indication of who was in the group at the time.

Among the song's influences were: Rogers and Hammerstein, Moody Blues and Monty Pythons Flying Circus.

The reference 'Books In The White Van' refers to when we travelled to gigs in the back of a Transit, and a member of the group finding some insalubrious literature tucked in a corner left behind by the van's previous owner.

The penultimate verse refers to the back room of the pub which backed on to Guys Hospital nurses home where we rehearsed every Tuesday after the local freemason had finished their weekly meeting.

The rest is a figment of our collective imagination.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS
(Steve Belsey, Tony Goodenough, Phil Jarrett)

Sheep in galoshes and nuns in black leather
Up on the chandelier, swinging together
Nubile young housemaids, all tied up with string
Those are a few of our favourite things.

High heels and short skirts, suspenders and stockings
Rubberwear catalogue, really quite shocking
Gymnast in gymslips, the though of it brings
A temperature rise, and a few other things...

When the Crew sings, and your ears ring
And it drives you mad
Just try to remember our favourite things
And then it won't seem so bad.

Nudge, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, wink
Nudge, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, wink.

Ladies in G-strings and tarts in white satin
Whips, chains and handcuffs, stilettoes quite Latin
Nice lady wrestlers in t-shirts that cling
Those are a few of our favourite things.

Small furry animals, wild and exciting
Books in the white van so strangely inviting
To which all the singers so avidly cling
Far too int'resting to put in the bin.

When the Crew sings, and your ears ring
And it drives you mad
Just try to remember our favourite things
And then it won't seem so bad.

Nudge, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, wink
Nudge, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, wink.

each Tuesday night, midst the masons and nurses
In a small pokey back room, the group it rehearses
Over and over familiar ground
Tryin' to achieve a spontaneous sound.

Belsey and Money and Spindlow and Jarrett
Chris Roche and Rita and Tony and parrot
Dominic Magog and other strange things
That's what you get when the Shanty Crew sings.

hen the crew sings, and your ears ring
And it drives you mad
Just try to remember our favourite things
And then it won't seem so bad.

For the record - the parrot was inflatable.

Refresh....just for the hell of it. Steve sang this today, and it was fun.

Good one! I have only heard another parody of “Favourite Things” about growing old and all the tribulations it brings. I believe that Julie Andrew’s herself was known to have sung it.

Maree Robertson sang "Fave Swings" to the tune of My Favorite Things at the Mudcat Singaround earlier this week. I think she wrote it. It seems to be about the onset of dementia. Here's the 1st stanza:

Wilting the roses and
Starving the kitten
Washing the dishes
My hands in wool mittens
Taking a shower
When already clean
These are the moments
When sanity swings...

Just cringing at that unnecessary apostrophe in Julie Andrews: I swear I did NOT write that! Apple did it!
