10 May 21 - 06:31 PM (#4105575) Subject: I went down in the Valley to Pray From: Jerry Rasmussen This was recorded at a Hartford Family Folk Festival. My Gospel quartet, the Gospel Messengers were doing the song. I was singing the lead. After the second or third word, you could barely hear the other members of the quartet. This is an auditorium full of folkies who either already knew the song, or picked it up after two or three bars. To me, this is one of the great strengths of folk music. This song could have been leade by one of a hundred different singers. There is such strength to the song and the harmonies! The song speaks for itself. We are honored to have the chance to sing it together.I'm posting this, first of all, to refresh making a blue clicky. We have trad songs & more recent songs, & at least one song was written the week it was posted, some were typed up from obscure roneoed song sheets, other came from obscure songbooks, others from famous songbooks! Songs are being added daily, who knows when we will stop, there are so many great songs out there that need gathering together & putting out to the world. There is a lot of history there too. sandra |

Moderators generally come along and check the links and fix them (blue clicky) or when there is a plain text link like you just posted, will go into edit the html into the link to make it hot. (As I just did.) Whatever works for you. |

The "BS" designation (also explained in the Newcomer's Guide) was mostly Sandy Paton's fault. THAT history may be in the FAQ, too. As well as how to make a link. If you want to share music, click on "Create a New Thread" at the top left of the Mudcat. When you do, you will be offered eleven common headings, including Tune Add and Lyrics add. Music can be shared as a link, as an abc file or as a sound file, preferably Noteworthy Composer to Joe Offer. If you are doing something unique, you don't need a heading at all. I have been posting music, either through links or by sending files to Joe Offer, for years. I also have music in my repertoire which I have obtained here at the Mudcat from others' posts. Someone (Doc Watson maybe?) sang (maybe) "as I went down by the river to pray". Oddly, Wikipedia has the singer praying *IN* the river. I guess it was a sort of swim-in meeting. Down *TO* the river is another one. But I do love the singing at Jerry's link. |

I'll get the dust off my mind and be back to as normal as I ever get. Jeri: I wouldn't worry about a word or two. I have heard a couple of words in I Went Down To the River to Pray that are different than the words I sing. I sing Angel Band, which I'll post when I go back and read how to do a blue clicky, "Snowy" wings." I've heard recordings of it with a different word than "Snowy." "Snowy" is the way it was originally written. That and a nickle will get you a five cent cigar. I have even changed a word on occasion on songs I wrote. That's six of one and a half a dozen of the other. Some folks call it the "folk process." I call it forgetting. Many years ago in a different galaxy I used to play fiddle. I was playing Forked Deer once, and apparently is typically played in a different key than I played it in. Someone came up to me after the concert, all irritated and said to me "You can't play Forked Deer in D (or whatever key I played it in." "I just did," I said. Don't have a cow. My dumb for not reading the prefixes. Life is good. :-) |
