Ideas for Mudcat Singaround 2nd Birthday-June 6

We are rapidly approaching the first birthday of the Monday afternoon/evening/night - Tuesday morning singaround.

Should we be looking at doing something a little bit special for this?

My idea is for people to request their favourite songs/items they would like to hear again and/or reprising their favourite songs/items they would like to do again.

And I forgot - credit to Joe and his army of co-hosts who have ensured that this keeps going each week.

"My idea is for people to request their favourite songs/items they would like to hear again...." But then no one but Dawn will get to sing!

Dawn would have difficult decisions to make, then.

The 24th May 2021 is the 50th Mudcat Worldwide Session. Thanks to Joe and the team we have all had a great time talking, singing and sharing our music. Yes, I think we should mark the occasion. Perhaps Joe and the team could choose their favourite songs from the folks who turn up on the day?

Another idea would be to make the theme loosely "Songs about Parties and Celebrations". We would especially enjoy the Irish classics about parties gone horribly wrong--Lanigan's Ball, Finnegan's Wake, The Night Paddy Murphy Died, etc. From other lands, parties gone right? The Spinner's Wedding, etc.

This is certainly one of the BEST things to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Good work, all of you!

I cannot believe we are coming up on 50.

I like the idea of celebrating 50x *then* 2 weeks later celebrating 1 year.

Woot!

I really love Dawn's singing and all the help and wisdom I've received from her in so many gatherings, but there are so many people at the Mudcat Singaround who sing so well and bring such interesting songs to the Gathering. I've been told I shouldn't name names, but there are so many singers at the weekly singaround who have voices that just make me melt.
I don't like the idea of naming a theme for the Singaround because I prefer serendipity, but it is delightful when people base their choices on what somebody has sung before. It might be an idea for the anniversary to ask people to sing their best, whether or not they've sung it before.

By my calculations, we started this singaround on Monday, 8 June 2020. Does that sound right?

The date sounds right to me.

Joe, on the birthday night, before we start going round the second time (which is probably when we will have the most people in the room), you could propose a toast and we can all raise our glasses in celebration!!!!

For one reason or another I haven't joined in for some time, but I think I should for the celebration. But which week is it to be? 24th May for the 50th or 8th June for one year?

We could have a zoom poll tomorrow - three choices 50th Session, 1st Birthday or Both.

The birthday night does give people more time to practice up requests and/or party pieces.

We will compromise. Our first session was June 8, 2020. Our celebration will be June 7, 2021 - one day short of our 1-year anniversary. Since we skipped a session for the Getaway, I believe this will be our 51st session.
Bring your best songs, even if you've sung them for us before.
We're have a toast at the halfway point.

*Virtual* toast, MoorleyMan.

Counting today's session, I've been to 48 of them. Joe, if your count is right, that means I haven't missed any of them. But I think from 8 June 2020 to 7 June 2021 would be 53 Mondays, so accounting for Getaway 52 sessions, not 51.

I do like Patty Clink's May 15th suggestion of songs about parties and celebrations. There are quite a few of them out there. I've got two in mind, even though they are not in my repetoire and I'll have to work on them. I also recent;y heard David Ingerson sing a song about a party and I suggested he come along and sing it next week. He liked the idea, but whether or not he will attend or will sing that song, I can't promise.

There have been other suggestions, so we'll have a bit of variety, as we always do.

Yes, great idea! Sorry I’ve missed a few weeks but would definitely come back for this one! Let it all be happy songs, but beyond that, no theme. As they say in the Middle Bar at Sidmouth, NFD - no xxxxxxxx dirges!

Have we lost Noreen and Jerry to the real life pubs forever? Have they been invited to come back and visit?

I have a happy song in the works, but shucks, I was going to haul out a great old obscure dirge. I'll leave it for the next week.   Perhaps we should have a NO KILKELLY rule like those venues which ban Danny Boy?

Another question. Who have been the co-hosts, are their main ones who have been the stalwarts, have there been many many? I would like to know their names or handles instead of just giving blanket credit to 'co-hosts' in general.

Cohosts? Ooooh. I hope I don't miss any of them:
  • Noreen
  • diplocase - Casey Casebeer
  • Dawn Berg
  • Mrrzy
  • Moorley Man - David Kidman
  • Arlene Immerman
  • Gerry Myerson (song lists)
  • Monique (foreign language songs)
  • Gayle Wade (responsible for muting Joe, who forgets)

But there are many other people who lend a hand regularly.

I am thinking of singing, as I mentioned last week, the song that brought me into the Mudcat community lo so long ago now...

Now there’s an idea! That or the song in the first lyric request you ever posted! Should be easy enough to find by looking back at your list of threads.

Thanks, Joe. It looks like my first post here, in December 2003, concerned the song, Prince Heathen (or the Hungarian version, The Ballad of Master Rákócz). I'm not sure I'm up to singing it, in English or Hungarian, and there's nothing celebratory in the song, it's quite brutal.

And the year turns round again - time to get our pieces of cake or a jam doughnut ready plus a glass of whatever beverage is appropriate to raise a health on Monday for our 2nd birthday.

Requests and/or party pieces at the ready.... and looking forward to Joe's speech and toast.

I haven't looked in for a few weeks, but will try to join next Monday: maybe I will follow Mrrzy's idea of singing that first song I ever looked for on Mudcat!
