Happy 80th Birthday, Martin Carthy

well, SOMEBODY has to start it ...

after all it is midnight on the US's East Coast,
and that means
that in Carthy's native England,
his birthday date began hours ago.

I sincerely hope that in 2022,
Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson
are both still with us
and celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

In the meantime, Happy Birthday, Martin Carthy.

I'll second that.
Beat me to it by two months.

Undoubtedly, one of the most important figures in the revival of traditional English music, and certainly the most important figure in MY development as a singer of traditional English (mostly) songs. Happy birthday, Martin.

Happy 80th Mr. C. Nice to see you were joining in on "I Want You Back " with K.T. Tunstall and thankyou for the Genoan boatmen selection on your Desert Island Discs.

Nice to hear him on Front Row on Radio 4 this evening and have Nancy Kerr and James Fagan talk about him in their zoom concert later on.

Many happy returns!

My little site has been busy, maybe too busy
, with build up to that other 80th birthday. But yesterday I kept the pages mostly Dylan-free to pay tribute to Martin ...

I thought I’d succeeded in creating a blue clicky!

Not sure if Martin checks Mudcat but know Eliza has (at least a few years ago), so maybe she will pass these best wishes on - and from me too.

I have only seen Martin perform live once, at the Sage Gateshead as part of a Christmas tour with family and friends - very enjoyable traditional concert.

I was made aware of the life of a travelling musician when I went to see Martin and Dave Swarbrick at a small folk club near Tweed, Ontario. The door was about $3.00 and there were about a hundred people there. At intermission I asked Martin how the club could afford to pay them. He said that they usually asked for more, but they were in the area and it sounded like an enjoyable gig. I asked where in the area they had been playing and he said they'd played a show in London the night before.
I said, "That's not in the area! London's 4 hours away."
He said, "They're both in Southern Ontario."

Further to Colin's link, in case, like me, you missed The Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe on the Beeb last week, here is "Martin Carthy at 80" - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000w310

ooops, well,

happy belated 81st birthday, Martin Carthy OBE, sir.
Never forgetting Norma Waterson Carthy, of course,
and hoping that memories of Norma
bring joy as well as sorrow.
